A monitoring system in accordance with claim 1 wherein the lock is secured in the opening, a recess is defined in the lock, and the monitoring device is secured in the recess. 3. A monitoring system in accordance with claim 1 wherein the product includes a lifting eye secured within the opening, and the monitoring device is contained within the lifting eye. 4. A monitoring system in accordance with claim 1 wherein the monitoring device includes a battery and a body, and the body holds the electronic device, the communication device and the battery together. 5. A monitoring system in accordance with claim 1 wherein the electronic device and the communication device are included in a single component. 6. A monitoring system in accordance with claim 1 wherein the monitoring device identifies whether the product is present on the base. 7. A monitoring system in accordance with claim 1 wherein the monitoring device identifies an amount of wear existing in the product. 8. A monitoring system in accordance with claim 1 wherein the monitoring device identifies any one of a part ID, condition, presence, usage and performance of the product. 9. A monitoring system in accordance with claim 1 including a camera to obtain an image of the product and a display to show the image for the user to verify the characteristic detected by the monitoring device. 10. A monitoring system in accordance with claim 1 including a camera to obtain an image of the product, and a processor to process information received from both the camera and the monitoring device to determine a characteristic of the product for a user. 11. A monitoring system in accordance with claim 1 including a processor receiving and processing the characteristic identified by the monitoring device and a display to provide information to a user. 12. A monitoring system in accordance with claim 1 wherein the remote device is secured to the product. 13. A monitoring system in accordance with claim 1 wherein the remote device is secured to the base. 14. A monitoring system in accordance with claim 1 wherein the remote device is secured to the earth working equipment. 15. A monitoring system in accordance with claim 1 wherein the remote device is separate from the earth working equipment. 16. A monitoring system in accordance with claim 15 wherein the base and the product are secured to a first mining machine, and the remote device is secured to a second mining machine. 17. A monitoring system in accordance with claim 16 wherein the second machine is a haul truck with a truck tray, and the remote device is secured to the truck tray. 18. A monitoring system in accordance with claim 15 wherein the remote device is secured to a station overlying a roadway where haul trucks travel. 19. A monitoring system in accordance with claim 1 wherein the wear member includes a mounting portion including the cavity, and the opening is in the mounting portion with the communication device between the interior surface and the exterior surface. 20. A monitoring system in accordance with claim 1 wherein the wear member includes a mounting portion including the cavity, and a bit portion for penetrating the ground, and wherein the opening is in the bit portion with the communication device forward of the interior surface. 21. A monitoring system in accordance with claim 1 wherein a dielectric material fills the opening between the monitoring device and the external surface. 22. A ground-engaging product in accordance with claim 1 wherein the wearable body includes a mounting portion including the cavity, and a bit portion for penetrating the ground, and wherein the opening is in the bit portion with the communication device forward of the interior surface. 23. A monitoring system for monitoring ground-engaging products secured to earth working equipment, the system comprising: a plurality of ground-engaging products mounted to earth working equipment with each said product being in a relatively fixed position with respect to the other products,a lock for securing each product to the earth working equipment;a monitoring device in each said product or each said lock, the monitoring devices detecting each other in a relatively fixed position with respect to other of the monitoring devices; anda remote device cooperating with the monitoring devices to receive a signal from at least one of the monitoring devices when the monitoring devices detect whether any of the monitoring devices has failed to continue in a relatively fixed position with respect to the other monitoring devices, and communicating to a user in any event where any of the product fails to continue in the relatively fixed position with respect to the other products. 24. A monitoring system in accordance with claim 23 wherein each said monitoring device transmits a signal that is received by the remote device. 25. A monitoring system in accordance with claim 23 wherein each said product has an exterior surface subject to wear during use, an interior surface that opposes the earth working equipment to which the product is secured during use, and a recess defined in the exterior surface of the product, and the monitoring device is secured in the recess. 26. A monitoring system in accordance with claim 23 wherein each said lock includes a recess and the monitoring device is secured in the recess. 27. A ground-engaging product for earth working equipment, the product comprising: a wearable body including an exterior surface subject to wear during use including top, bottom and side walls, an interior surface defining a rearward-opening cavity receiving the nose to mount the product on the base, the interior surface opposing a nose of a base of the earth working equipment to which the product is secured during use, and an opening that opens to the exterior surface in one of the top, bottom and side walls; anda monitoring device including an electronic device for identifying a characteristic of the product and a communication device for wirelessly communicating information about the characteristic to a remote device, the communication device being secured within the opening and positioned outward from the interior surface. 28. A ground-engaging product in accordance with claim 27 wherein the monitoring device includes a battery and a body, and the body holds the electronic device, the communication device and the battery together. 29. A ground-engaging product in accordance with claim 27 wherein the electronic device and the communication device are included in a single component. 30. A ground-engaging product in accordance with claim 27 wherein the monitoring device identifies whether the product is present on the base. 31. A ground-engaging product in accordance with claim 27 wherein the monitoring device identifies an amount of wear existing in the product. 32. A ground-engaging product in accordance with claim 27 wherein the monitoring device identifies any one of a part ID, condition, presence, usage and performance of the product. 33. A ground-engaging product in accordance with claim 27 wherein the wearable body includes a mounting portion including the cavity, and the opening is in the mounting portion with the communication device between the interior surface and the exterior surface. 34. A ground-engaging product in accordance with claim 27 wherein a dielectric material fills the opening between the monitoring device and the external surface. 35. A ground-engaging assembly for earth working equipment, the assembly comprising a product securable to earth working equipment to contact the ground during use and including an opening, a lock received in the opening to secure the product to the earth working equipment, a plug releasably secured in the opening outside of the lock, and a monitoring device secured to the plug for identifying a characteristic of the product. 36. A ground-engaging assembly in accordance with claim 35 wherein the product includes an exterior surface subject to wear during use and an interior surface opposing a base of the earth working equipment to which the product is secured during use, wherein the monitoring device includes an electronic device for identifying the characteristic of the product and a communication device for wirelessly communicating information about the characteristic, and wherein the communication device is outward of the interior surface. 37. A ground-engaging assembly in accordance with claim 35 wherein a recess is defined in the lock, and the plug is secured in the recess. 38. A ground-engaging assembly in accordance with claim 35 wherein the monitoring device includes a battery and a body, and the body holds the electronic device, the communication device and the battery together. 39. A ground-engaging assembly in accordance with claim 35 wherein the monitoring device identifies whether the product is present on the base. 40. A ground-engaging assembly in accordance with claim 35 wherein the monitoring device identifies an amount of wear existing in the product. 41. A ground-engaging assembly in accordance with claim 35 wherein the plug covers the opening to provide protection against the entry of fines in the opening. 42. A lock for securing ground-engaging product to earth working equipment, the lock comprising a rigid component with a base-engaging portion to contact a base of the earth working equipment when securing a product to the base, a recess in the rigid component, and a monitoring device secured and fully contained within the recess for identifying a characteristic of the product, wherein the lock includes a threaded pin and a threaded collar, and the monitoring device is secured to the pin. 43. A lock for securing ground-engaging product to earth working equipment, the lock comprising a rigid component with a base-engaging portion to contact a base of the earth working equipment when securing a product to the base, a recess in the rigid component, and a monitoring device secured and fully contained within the recess for identifying a characteristic of the product, wherein the lock includes a pair of hinged components, and the monitoring device is secured to one of the components.
