A system for continuous in vivo measurement of glucose in a host, the system comprising: a continuous glucose sensor configured for implantation in a host and configured to measure in vivo a signal indicative of a glucose concentration, wherein the continuous glucose sensor comprises an electrode, wherein the electrode comprises a glucose-impermeable material and conductive particles distributed within the glucose-impermeable material, wherein each of the conductive particles has a three-dimensional electroactive surface;a biocompatible membrane located over at least a portion of the electrode, wherein the biocompatible membrane is configured to reduce a flux of glucose therethrough; andsensor electronics operably connected to the continuous glucose sensor, wherein the sensor electronics are configured to process the signal from the continuous glucose sensor. 2. The system of claim 1, wherein the electrode comprises a plurality of sensing elements, wherein the sensor electronics are configured to determine the glucose concentration by averaging or integrating signals from the plurality of sensing elements. 3. The system of claim 1, wherein the electroactive surfaces all have a substantially equal area. 4. The system of claim 1, wherein the electroactive surfaces are each spaced apart from at least one adjacent electroactive surface by a substantially equal distance. 5. The system of claim 1, wherein the biocompatible membrane comprises polyurethane. 6. The system of claim 1, wherein the continuous glucose sensor has a planar shape. 7. The system of claim 1, wherein the electrode comprises a mixture comprising of metal oxide and carbon. 8. The system of claim 7, wherein the mixture further comprises platinum. 9. The system of claim 1, wherein the sensor is configured to apply a bias potential from about 0.1 V to about 0.6 V. 10. The system of claim 9, wherein the sensor is configured to apply a bias potential at around 0.35 V. 11. The system of claim 2, wherein the sensing elements are spaced along a substantial length of an in vivo portion of the continuous glucose sensor. 12. The system of claim 2, wherein the plurality of sensing elements comprise more than two electroactive surfaces. 13. The system of claim 2, wherein the plurality of sensing elements comprise more than three electroactive surfaces. 14. The system of claim 2, wherein the plurality of sensing elements are spaced apart within a diffusion distance of a measured glucose.
