The trash compactor of claim 1, further comprising a cross bar extending across the frame along the axis of rotation. 3. The trash compactor of claim 2, wherein the first end of said upper linkages is attached to the frame via attachment to the cross bar. 4. The trash compactor of claim 2, wherein the second end of the cross member is attached to the frame via attachment to the cross bar. 5. The trash compactor of claim 4, wherein the first end of the cross member is secured to the frame on a side opposite that of the cross bar. 6. The trash compactor of claim 5, wherein the cross member comprises a pair of bars, one on either side of the drive mechanism.
