1. A method for use in supporting electronic equipment comprising: providing a rack structure having a number of vertically spaced rail assemblies, wherein each of said rail assemblies comprises a left side rail subassembly and a right side rail subassembly mounted on said rack structure and separated by a width therebetween, said width being common to all said rail assemblies;providing first and second pieces of electronic equipment having first and second widths, respectively, said second width being different from said first width, and providing first and second rail mounting structures, respectively, for said first and second pieces of electronic equipment, for mounting said first and second pieces of electronic equipment to respective ones of said rail assemblies; each of said first and second rail mounting structures including a first portion for mounting to a respective one of said first and second pieces of electronic equipment, a second portion for mounting to a respective one of said first and second rail assemblies, and an adjustment mechanism for adjusting a distance between said first and second portions;securing said first and second pieces of electronic equipment to said first and second rail mounting structures;using said adjustment mechanisms to adjust said first and second rail mounting structures for mounting on said first and second rail assemblies;first inserting said first piece of electronic equipment with said first rail mounting structure secured thereto into a first location of said rack structure by slidably moving said first rail mounting structure from a first position wherein said first piece of electronic equipment and first rail mounting structure are separated from said a first one of said rail assemblies and a second position wherein said first rail mounting structure is engaged with said first one of said rail assemblies;removing said first piece of electronic equipment from said rack structure by slidably disengaging said first rail mounting structure and said first one of said rail assemblies; andsecond inserting said first piece of electronic equipment into a second location of said rack structure by slidably engaging said first rail mounting structure and a second one of said rail assemblies. 2. The method as set forth in claim 1, wherein said step of first inserting further comprises engaging a latch to fix a position of said first piece of electronic equipment in relation to said rack structure. 3. The method as set forth in claim 2, wherein said step of engaging comprises selecting an offset position from a set of predefined offset positions, wherein each said offset position defines a unique position of a front surface of said first piece of electronic equipment in relation to a front surface of said rack structure. 4. The method as set forth in claim 1, wherein said second location is in the same rack as said first location. 5. The method as set forth in claim 1, further comprising the step of inserting said second piece of electronic equipment into said first location of said rack structure free from reconfiguring any of said rail assemblies or said second rail mounting structure. 6. The method as set forth in claim 1, wherein each of said first and second mounting structures comprises rails for engaging said left and right side rail subassemblies and adaptors for interconnecting each of said rails to a piece of electronic equipment. 7. The method as set forth in claim 6, wherein each of said adaptors is a universal adaptor that can be configured to accommodate different pieces of electronic equipment having different widths. 8. The method as set forth in claim 7, wherein said step of securing comprises using a mounting fixture, separate from said rack structure, to configure said first and second rail mounting structures. 9. A method for use in supporting electronic equipment such as in a data center, comprising: providing a rack structure having a number of vertically spaced rail assemblies, wherein each of said rail assemblies comprises a left side rail subassembly and a right side rail subassembly mounted on said rack structure and separated by a width therebetween, said width being common to all said rail assemblies;providing first and second pieces of electronic equipment having first and second widths, respectively, said second width being different from said first width, and providing first and second rail mounting structures, respectively, for said first and second pieces of electronic equipment, for mounting said first and second pieces of electronic equipment to respective ones of said rail assemblies, said first and second mounting structures being adjustable to accommodate equipment of different widths;securing said first and second pieces of electronic equipment to said first and second rail mounting structures by using an adjustment mechanism, independent from said rack structure, for adjusting a distance between said first and second rail mounting structures; andfirst inserting said first and second pieces of electronic equipment into respective first and second locations of said rack structure by slidably moving each set of said first and second rail mounting structures between a first position where said rail mounting structure is separated from a respective one of said first and second rail assemblies and a second position where said rail mounting structure is engaged with said respective one of said first and second rail assemblies. 10. The method as set forth in claim 9, further comprising: removing said first and second pieces of electronic equipment from said rack structure by slidably disengaging said first and second rail mounting structures and said first and second ones of said rail assemblies. 11. The method as set forth in claim 9, further comprising: second inserting said first and second pieces of electronic equipment into third and fourth locations of said rack structure by slidably engaging said first and second rail mounting structures with third and fourth ones of said rail assemblies. 12. The method as set forth in claim 9, wherein said step of first inserting further comprises engaging a latch to fix a position of said first piece of electronic equipment in relation to said rack structure. 13. The method as set forth in claim 12, wherein said step of engaging comprises selecting an offset position from a set of predefined offset positions, wherein each said offset position defines a unique position of a front surface of said first piece of electronic equipment in relation to a first surface of said rack structure. 14. The method as set forth in claim 9, further comprising the step of inserting said second piece of electronic equipment into said first location of said rack structure free from reconfiguring any of said rail assemblies or said second rail mounting structure. 15. The method as set forth in claim 9, wherein each of said first and second mounting structures comprises rails for engaging said left and right side rail subassemblies and adaptors for interconnecting each of said rails to a piece of electronic equipment. 16. The method as set forth in claim 15, wherein each of said adaptors is a universal adaptor that can be configured to accommodate different pieces of electronic equipment having different widths.
