Devices and methods for treating vascular defects, such as, for example, balloon-type aneurysms, are described herein. In one embodiment, an apparatus includes an insertion portion and an expandable implant. The expandable implant is configured to be deployed in an aneurysm and is coupled to the insertion portion. The expandable implant has a first portion and a second portion coupled to the first portion. The expandable implant is movable between a first configuration in which the first portion and the second portion are substantially linearly aligned and a second configuration in which the second portion at least partially overlaps the first portion.

1. An occlusive device configured to be positioned within an aneurysm, the device comprising: a mesh having a proximal terminus and a distal terminus opposite the proximal terminus along the length of the mesh; andan attachment mechanism at the distal terminus of the mesh, wherein the mesh has a preset shape such that, at least when the mesh is in a deployed state, the mesh includes: a flattened broad portion having a first width,a curved intermediate portion extending distally from the flattened broad portion, the curved intermediate portion having a second width less than the first width, andan elongated narrow portion extending distally from the curved intermediate portion and terminating at the attachment mechanism, wherein the elongated narrow portion is positioned at an angle relative to the flattened broad portion. 2. The occlusive device of claim 1, further comprising a lead-in member extending distally from the attachment mechanism. 3. The occlusive device of claim 1, further comprising a lead-in member extending distally from the attachment mechanism and having a preset curved shape in a deployed state. 4. The occlusive device of claim 1 wherein the mesh is a braid. 5. The occlusive device of claim 1 wherein the mesh is a superelastic braid, and wherein the device further comprises a lead-in member extending distally from the attachment mechanism and having a preset curved shape in a deployed state. 6. The occlusive device of claim 1 wherein, when the mesh is in the deployed state, the mesh is configured to contact and conform to an inner surface of the aneurysm. 7. The occlusive device of claim 1 wherein the flattened broad portion is a first flattened broad portion, and wherein, in the deployed state, the mesh further comprises a second flattened broad portion separated from the first flattened broad portion by a constricted portion. 8. The occlusive device of claim 1 wherein the flattened broad portion is a first flattened broad portion, and wherein, in the deployed state, the mesh further comprises a second flattened broad portion, and further wherein the first flattened broad portion and the second flattened broad portion are configured to together form a spherical shape within the aneurysm. 9. The occlusive device of claim 1 wherein the device is configured to be positioned within a cerebral aneurysm. 10. The occlusive device of claim 1 wherein the attachment mechanism is generally straight. 11. An intrasaccular occlusion device configured to be positioned within a cerebral aneurysm, the device comprising: a mesh having a proximal terminus and a distal terminus opposite the proximal terminus along the length of the mesh; andan attachment mechanism at the distal terminus of the mesh, wherein the mesh has a preset shape such that, at least when the mesh is in a deployed state, the mesh further includes: a plurality of flattened broad portions,a curved distal portion extending distally from a distal terminus of the distal-most flattened broad portion, the curved distal portion having a width that is less than a width of the distal-most flattened broad portion, andan elongated narrow portion extending distally from the curved distal portion and terminating at the attachment mechanism, wherein the elongated narrow portion is positioned at an angle relative to the distal-most flattened broad portion. 12. The occlusion device of claim 11, further comprising a lead-in member extending distally from the attachment mechanism. 13. The occlusion device of claim 11, further comprising a lead-in member extending distally from the attachment mechanism and having a preset curved shape in a deployed state. 14. The occlusion device of claim 11 wherein the mesh is formed of a plurality of superelastic, braided wires. 15. The occlusion device of claim 11 wherein the mesh is a braid, and wherein the device further comprises a lead-in member extending distally from the attachment mechanism and having a preset curved shape in a deployed state. 16. The occlusion device of claim 11 wherein, when the mesh is in the deployed state, the mesh is configured to contact and conform to an inner surface of the aneurysm. 17. The occlusion device of claim 11 wherein, in the deployed the state, the mesh further comprises at least one constricted portion positioned between adjacent flattened broad portions. 18. The occlusive device of claim 11 wherein the flattened broad portions are configured to together form a spherical shape within the aneurysm. 19. The occlusion device of claim 11 wherein the attachment mechanism is generally linear.
