Methods and systems are provided for restarting an engine when a high pressure fuel pump is degraded. In response to an indication of high pressure fuel pump degradation, fuel may be injected during an intake stroke, rather than a compression stroke, for a selected number of combustion events since the engine restart. By shifting to an intake stroke injection, the engine may be started even when sufficient fuel rail pressures are not available.

1. A method of operating an engine, comprising: during an engine cold start condition, direct injecting fuel into a first firing cylinder during an intake stroke of the first firing cylinder independent of a state of a high pressure fuel pump coupled to the engine to restart the engine;directly injecting fuel into subsequent intake strokes of the first firing cylinder after direct injecting fuel into the intake stroke of the first firing cylinder in response to fuel pump degradation; anddirectly injecting fuel into compression strokes of the first firing cylinder after direct injecting fuel into the intake stroke of the first firing cylinder in response to absence of fuel pump degradation. 2. The method of claim 1, wherein directly injecting fuel into subsequent intake strokes includes directly injecting fuel into the subsequent intake strokes until engine speed is greater than a threshold speed, and wherein directly injecting fuel into compression strokes of the first firing cylinder includes directly injecting fuel into the compression strokes until engine speed is greater than the threshold speed. 3. The method of claim 1, wherein the engine cold start condition includes one or more of an exhaust catalyst temperature being below a threshold temperature, and the engine being in an engine-off condition for greater than a threshold time. 4. The method of claim 1, further comprising continuing direct injecting fuel during subsequent intake strokes after the intake stroke of the first firing cylinder for a number of combustion events since the engine restart, the number of combustion events based on whether or not the high pressure fuel pump is degraded. 5. The method of claim 4, wherein the continuing direct injecting for the number of combustion events includes direct injecting for the number of combustion events until an engine speed is at or above a threshold speed. 6. The method of claim 5, further comprising while direct injecting fuel during the intake stroke of the first firing cylinder, adjusting an ignition spark timing based on the direct injection. 7. The method of claim 6, further comprising while direct injecting fuel during the intake stroke of the first firing cylinder, applying an alternator load on the engine, the alternator load based on a combustion event number. 8. The method of claim 1, further comprising adjusting an intake and/or exhaust valve timing of the first firing cylinder so that the direct fuel injection occurs during positive valve overlap. 9. The method of claim 1, wherein the direct injecting fuel during the intake stroke of the first firing cylinder includes direct injecting fuel as a single injection during the intake stroke of the first firing cylinder, and wherein directly injecting fuel into compression strokes includes directly injecting fuel as multiple injections during the compression strokes. 10. A method for an engine, comprising: cold-starting the engine with a high-pressure fuel pump degraded;determining whether a start is a cold start; and responsive thereto and during the cold start condition with the degraded high-pressure fuel pump, only intake-stroke injecting fuel directly into firing cylinders; andcold-starting the engine with the high-pressure fuel pump not degraded and compression-stroke injecting fuel directly into firing cylinders during the cold start condition. 11. The method of claim 10, further comprising boosting engine operation with a turbocharger. 12. The method of claim 10, further comprising directly injecting fuel into cylinders of the engine during a positive intake and exhaust valve overlap in response to degradation of the high-pressure fuel pump. 13. The method of claim 10, further comprising adjusting timing of fuel injections into cylinders responsive to engine speed and load after engine speed exceeds a threshold speed.
