The laser level of claim 1, wherein a top surface of the upper structure has a substantially square shape. 5. The laser level of claim 1, wherein a top surface of the upper structure is a closed shape. 6. The laser level of claim 5, wherein the top surface of the upper structure is open inside the closed shape. 7. The laser level of claim 1, wherein the protective structure is made of a shock absorbing material. 8. The laser level of claim 7, wherein the shock absorbing material comprises at least one of rubber, foam or plastic. 9. The laser level of claim 8, wherein the control mechanism further comprises at least one lens and a motor. 10. The laser level of claim 1, wherein the lower structure comprises a lower portion and a plurality of lower legs projecting from the control mechanism housing to the lower portion. 11. The laser level of claim 1, wherein the laser level is configured such that when placed on a flat surface, only the protective structure contacts the flat surface regardless of the orientation of the laser level. 12. The laser level of claim 1, wherein the laser level is configured such that it can be stably positioned on a flat surface in at least six orientations. 13. The laser level of claim 12, wherein the control mechanism housing is generally cube-shaped and includes six sides; and wherein the at least six orientations correspond to the six sides of the control mechanism housing. 14. The laser level of claim 1, wherein the laser generator comprises a laser diode. 15. The laser level of claim 1, wherein the legs of the upper section are sufficiently long so that the flanges do not block the laser beam generated projected from the projector. 16. The laser level of claim 15, wherein the upper section comprises at least four legs. 17. The laser level of claim 1, wherein the upper section comprises at least six legs; and wherein the legs are made of a different material than the flanges. 18. The laser level of claim 1, wherein the plurality of legs includes at least a first leg, a second leg, a third leg and a fourth leg; wherein the first leg and second leg are located adjacent one another and form a first pair of legs;wherein the third leg and the fourth leg are located adjacent one another and form a second pair of legs;wherein the first leg is closer to the second leg than the first pair of legs is to the second pair of legs; andwherein the third leg is closer to the fourth leg than the first pair of legs is to the second pair of legs. 19.
