A method and system for providing information management of data from hosted services receives information management policies for a hosted account of a hosted service, requests data associated with the hosted account from the hosted service, receives data associated with the hosted account from the hosted service, and provides a preview version of the received data to a computing device. In some examples, the system indexes the received data to associate the received data with a user of an information management system, and/or provides index information related to the received data to the computing device.

1. A non-transitory computer-readable medium carrying instructions for managing a file associated with social networking services, comprising: providing a user interface to enable a user to identify or access multiple accounts provided by different social networking services, wherein the social networking services provide access to a file associated with the user;creating a copy of the file for primary storage;receiving a set of criteria and rules for an information management policy for the multiple accounts via the user interface, wherein the information management policy identifies at least one type of file and a data storage policy for managing copies of that type of file; andstoring the copy of the file in accordance with the information management policy in secondary storage. 2. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 1, further comprising: authenticating access for the user to the accounts by receiving an identifier and a password for the user via the user interface; andautomatically requesting an additional copy of the file in accordance with a data request frequency defined by the information management policy. 3. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 1, wherein the type of file is a digital photo, a digital video, a social networking post, or a document. 4. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 1, further comprising: generating a preview of at least part of the content of the copy of the file;performing information management operations on the generated preview; andproviding the preview to a computing device to enable the computing device to display the preview. 5. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim further comprising: generating a preview of at least part of the content of the copy of the file; anddistributing the preview to other computing devices in accordance with the information management policy for the accounts to enable the user to view and manipulate the preview while the user operates the other computing devices. 6. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 1, further comprising: performing information management operations on the copy of the file in accordance with the information management policy, wherein the information management operations include: deduplicating the copy of the file; andtransferring the copy of the file from the hosted service to another hosted service to make the copy of the file available through the other hosted service. 7. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 1, wherein the user interface includes a policy dropdown menu to enable the user to associate, via a single menu choice, each of the multiple accounts with one of a number of predetermined information management policies, orwherein the user interface includes an alias field to receive a descriptive alias from the user for each of the accounts to enable the user and an information management system to readily identify the account as a source of files for the user. 8. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 1, wherein the received set of criteria and rules determine which file types an information management system requests and receives from each of the social networking services. 9. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 1, wherein the received set of criteria and rules for the information management policy determine where the copy of the file is stored within an information management system, wherein the user is one of multiple users associated with an organization, wherein the organization is an employer of the multiple users, andwherein the social networking services are hosted by third party companies unrelated to the organization. 10. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 1, further comprising: automatically detecting applications installed on a computing device that are associated with each of the multiple social networking services and prepopulating the user interface with a list of the social networking services associated with the applications. 11. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 1, further comprising: receiving an administrator information management policy; andoverriding aspects of the information management policy for the accounts that conflict with the administrator information management policy, in accordance with the administrator information management policy. 12. A system for providing information management of data from social networking services, comprising: at least one processor;at least one memory, coupled to the at least one processor, and carrying instructions to be executed by the at least one processor, wherein the instructions are for: receiving identification or access information for each of one or more accounts provided by one or more social networking services, wherein the one or more social networking services provide access to data objects associated with a user;receiving a set of criteria and rules for defining information management policies for the one or more accounts, wherein the information management policies identify at least one type of data object and a data storage policy for managing copies of that type of data object; andrequesting data associated with one of the accounts from one of the social networking services in accordance with the received the set of criteria and rues for defining the information management policies. 13. The system of claim 12, wherein the received set of criteria and rues for defining information management policies mandate requesting only specified types of data from one of the social networking services, orwherein the received set of criteria and rules for defining information management policies mandate a frequency for requesting data from one of the social networking services. 14. The system of claim 12, further comprising: a means for providing a preview version of the received data to a computing device, wherein the received the set of criteria and rules for defining information management policies include a data distribution policy. 15. The system of claim 12, wherein the received set of criteria and rules for defining the information management policies include an administrator-based policy that overrides a user-based policy. 16. A method of managing social networking data, comprising: receiving identification or access information for one or more accounts provided by one or more social networking services;associating one or more accounts with a user, wherein the one or more social networking services provide access to data objects associated with the user;associating the one or more accounts with an information management policy, wherein the information management policy includes a set of criteria and rules for defining information management policies to identify at least one type of data object and a data storage policy for managing copies of that type of data object; andrequesting copies of data objects from the social networking services via the multiple accounts in accordance with the information management policy for the multiple accounts. 17. The method of claim 16, further comprising: generating previews of at least part of the content of the data objects; anddistributing the previews to computing devices associated with an information management system to enable the user to view and manipulate the previews while the user operates other computing devices. 18. The method of claim 16, further comprising: performing information management operations on the received data objects; andtransferring the data objects to a social networking service unassociated with the accounts to make the copies of the data objects available via a public network through the social networking service. 19. The method of claim 16, further comprising: performing information management operations upon the data objects received from the social networking services in accordance with the information management policies for the accounts, wherein the information management operations include: indexing the received data objects to associate the received data objects with the user; andproviding index information related to the received data objects to a computing device. 20. The method of claim 17, wherein the information management system is unaffiliated with and not controlled by entities that control or manage the social networking services, and wherein one of the social networking services is accessible via a computing device.
