Methods of inserting and retaining interbody fusion material are disclosed. In some embodiments, the methods include inserting an anchored implant comprising a bone anchoring portion and an engagement portion. A method may also include inserting at least one bone fusion material within a disc space between two adjacent vertebral bodies. In some embodiments, a method includes driving the bone anchoring portion into an outer surface of at least one of the adjacent vertebral bodies and recessing the bone anchoring portion within the outer surface of the at least one adjacent vertebral body.

1. An impaction device comprising: an engagement member configured to engage soft tissue at a location of a defect of an anulus fibrosus of an intervertebral disc; anda bone anchoring member configured to be implanted within an outer surface of a vertebral body adjacent the defect such that no portion of the bone anchoring member lies beyond the outer surface of the vertebral body;wherein the bone anchoring member is directly coupled to the engagement member, wherein the engagement member is configured to displace the soft tissue from the defect into the disc space of the intervertebral disc and to contain the soft tissue, thereby preventing the soft tissue from exiting through the defect. 2. The impaction device of claim 1, wherein the bone anchoring member comprises a plate-like horizontal keel having a proximal leading end and a distal trailing end and a vertical member extending vertically from the trailing end of the horizontal keel. 3. The impaction device of claim 2, wherein the horizontal keel comprises a first modified surface region on an upper surface of the leading end of the horizontal keel and a second modified surface region on a lower surface of the trailing end of the horizontal keel. 4. The impaction device of claim 3, wherein the first and second modified surface regions comprise features selected from the group consisting of: grooves, voids, ridges and protrusions. 5. The impaction device of claim 1, wherein the engagement member comprises a polymer mesh and wherein the bone anchoring member is comprises titanium. 6. The impaction device of claim 1, wherein the engagement member and the bone anchoring member are removably coupled. 7. The impaction device of claim 2, wherein the horizontal keel comprises a coating of osteoinductive or osteoconductive factors. 8. The impaction device of claim 2, wherein the vertical member comprises a tapered cross section that tapers from a wider cross section at an intersection with the horizontal keel to a narrower cross-section as the vertical member extends away from the horizontal keel. 9. The impaction device of claim 1, wherein the engagement member is pivotably coupled to the bone anchoring member. 10. An impaction device comprising: an anchored implant configured to facilitate fusion between adjacent vertebral bodies, the intervertebral disc having a disc space configured to be accessed and to receive bone graft material, the anchored implant comprising: a bone anchoring portion configured to be driven into an outer surface of one of the two adjacent vertebral bodies along a direction of access and to be recessed within the outer surface such that no portion of the bone anchoring portion lies beyond the outer surface of the one of the two adjacent vertebral bodies; andan engagement portion coupled to the bone anchoring portion such that, upon driving the bone anchoring portion into the outer surface of one of the two adjacent vertebral bodies, the engagement portion is configured to displace the bone graft material into the disc space. 11. The impaction device of claim 10, wherein the engagement portion is entirely rigid. 12. The impaction device of claim 10, wherein the engagement portion is entirely flexible. 13. The impaction device of claim 10, wherein the engagement portion is partially rigid and partially flexible. 14. The impaction device of claim 10, wherein the bone anchoring member comprises a planar horizontal member having a proximal leading end and a distal trailing end and a vertical member extending vertically from the trailing end of the planar horizontal member. 15. The impaction device of claim 14, wherein the planar horizontal member comprises a first modified surface region on an upper surface of the leading end of the planar horizontal member and a second modified surface region on a lower surface of the trailing end of the planar horizontal member. 16. The impaction device of claim 15, wherein the first and second modified surface regions comprise features selected from the group consisting of: grooves, voids, ridges and protrusions. 17. The impaction device of claim 10, wherein the engagement portion and the bone anchoring portion form a unitary construct. 18. The impaction device of claim 10, wherein the engagement portion and the bone anchoring portion are removably coupled. 19. The impaction device of claim 10, wherein the engagement portion comprises a polymer mesh, and wherein the anchoring portion comprises titanium. 20. A system comprising: the impaction device of claim 10; andat least a second anchored implant configured to facilitate fusion between the adjacent vertebral bodies, the second anchored implant comprising: a second bone anchoring portion configured to be driven into the outer surface of the other one of the two adjacent vertebral bodies along a second direction of access and to be recessed within the outer surface such that no portion of the second bone anchoring portion lies beyond the outer surface of the other one of the two adjacent vertebral bodies; anda second engagement portion coupled to the second bone anchoring portion such that, upon driving the second bone anchoring portion into the outer surface of the other one of the two adjacent vertebral bodies, the second engagement portion is configured to displace the bone graft material into the disc space.
