Hybrid terrain-adaptive lower-extremity apparatus and methods that perform in a variety of different situations by detecting the terrain that is being traversed, and adapting to the detected terrain. In some embodiments, the ability to control the apparatus for each of these situations builds upon five basic capabilities: (1) determining the activity being performed; (2) dynamically controlling the characteristics of the apparatus based on the activity that is being performed; (3) dynamically driving the apparatus based on the activity that is being performed; (4) determining terrain texture irregularities (e.g., how sticky is the terrain, how slippery is the terrain, is the terrain coarse or smooth, does the terrain have any obstructions, such as rocks) and (5) a mechanical design of the apparatus that can respond to the dynamic control and dynamic drive.

1. A method of controlling a lower-extremity apparatus comprising a foot member, a lower leg member worn by a wearer, and an ankle joint for connecting the foot member to the lower leg member, the method comprising the steps of: tracking a trajectory of a point on the lower leg member of a lower-extremity apparatus over underlying terrain by an inertial measurement unit;monitoring, by a state estimation and actuator controller, a velocity of an angle of attack of the ankle joint;determining, by the state estimation and actuator controller, an activity type according to the tracked trajectory and the velocity of the angle of attack of the ankle joint, the activity type determined from the group consisting of: moving on flat terrain, moving up stairs, moving down stairs, moving up a slope, and moving down a sloe; andadjusting a parameter associated with the lower-extremity apparatus during a swing phase of a gait cycle based at least in part on the determined activity type, wherein the parameter is selected from the group consisting of joint position equilibrium, joint impedance, and joint torque. 2. The method of claim 1, wherein the apparatus comprises a thigh member and a knee joint for connecting the lower leg member to the thigh member. 3. The method of claim 2, wherein the apparatus comprises a torso member, and a hip joint for connecting the thigh member to the torso member. 4. The method of claim 1, further comprising updating the parameter continuously during the gait cycle by a processor in communication with at least one sensor and one actuator of the apparatus. 5. The method of claim 1, further comprising adjusting during the gait cycle at least two of joint position equilibrium, joint impedance and joint torque. 6. The method of claim 1, wherein the apparatus is selected from the group consisting of a prosthetic, an orthotic, and an exoskeleton. 7. The method of claim 1, wherein adjusting a parameter comprises updating the parameter associated with apparatus. 8. The method of claim 1, wherein tracking a trajectory of a point comprises tracking a location on the wearer coupled to the apparatus. 9. The method of claim 1, further comprising tracking a trajectory of at least one location on the foot member. 10. The method of claim 1, wherein adjusting the parameter associated with the lower-extremity apparatus during the swing phase of the gait cycle based at least in part on the determined activity type comprises: adjusting, by the state estimation and actuator controller, the parameter to position the ankle joint according to a terrain type associated with the activity type. 11. The method of claim 1, wherein tracking the trajectory of a point comprises tracking a point at a virtual center of rotation of the ankle joint.
