Generally, the system comprises a laser, optics for delivering the laser beam and a control system for delivering the laser beam to the lens in a particular pattern. There is further provided apparatus for determining the shape and position of the lens with respect to the laser. There is yet further provided a method and system for delivering a laser beam in the lens of the eye in a predetermined shot pattern.

A laser system for treating a cataractous natural crystalline lens of an eye, the laser system comprising: a. a laser that generates a therapeutic laser beam;b. an optical assembly that receives, directs and focuses the therapeutic laser beam to a predetermined location associated with the laser system;c. the optical assembly comprising a z-focus device and an x, y scanner;d. the optical assembly and laser defining a therapeutic laser beam delivery path;e. a patient interface device for associating the cornea of an eye of a patient with the laser system, the patient interface device containing an interface fluid between a transparent element and the cornea;f. the interface fluid positioned in the therapeutic laser beam delivery path;g. a lens position determination assembly comprising: i. a scanned coherent light source to provide an illumination beam;ii. an x, y scanner;iii. a z-focus device;iv. an image capture device for providing observed data;v. a processor for deterring the position of the lens with respect to the therapeutic laser;vi. the processor associated with the image capture device, whereby the processor receives actual observed data from the image capture device; and,vii. wherein the light source, the x, y scanner of the lens position determination assembly, the z-focus device of the lens position determination assembly, and image capture device define an illumination beam path;viii. whereby the illumination beam path passes through the interface fluid; and,h. the processor is capable of modeling a position for the lens with respect to the therapeutic laser. 2. The laser system of claim 1, wherein the x, y scanner of the optical assembly and the x, y scanner of the lens position determination assembly are the same. 3. The laser system of claim 1, wherein the z-focus device of the optical assembly and the z-focus device of the lens position determination assembly are the same. 4. The laser system of claim 1, wherein the z-focus device of the optical assembly and the z-focus device of the lens position determination assembly are the same. 5. The laser system of claim 1, wherein the light source is a laser diode. 6. The laser system of claim 1, wherein the image capture device comprises a camera. 7. The laser system of claim 6, wherein the camera is in a Scheimpflug configuration. 8. The laser system of claim 1, wherein the predetermined location is coincident with the determined position for the lens of the eye. 9. The laser system of claim 1, wherein the predetermined location is based upon the determined position for the lens of the eye. 10. A system for delivering a laser beam to a natural crystalline lens of an eye comprising: a. a laser for producing a laser beam of a predetermined wavelength;b. an optical system defining a path for directing the laser beam from the laser so that the laser beam is delivered with a predetermined spot size to a predetermined volume of a portion of a natural crystalline lens of the eye that is separate from a cornea of the eye;c. a scanner that receives the laser beam from the laser and directs the laser beam along the optical path to the predetermined volume;d. a means for determining a position of the natural crystalline lens, the means for determining comprising a structured light source, a structured light source camera, and dual cameras that are in optical communication with the scanner; ande. a control system that is in electrical communication with the laser and the scanner, wherein the control system controls operation of the laser and the scanner so that the laser beam with a predetermined spot size is focused at the predetermined volume based on the determined position, wherein the predetermined wavelength and predetermined spot size are such that the laser beam travels entirely through a cornea of the eye without significantly affecting the cornea prior to being focused at the predetermined volume of the portion of the natural crystalline lens. 11. A laser system for treating a cataractous natural crystalline lens of an eye, the laser system comprising: a. a laser that generates a therapeutic laser beam;b. an optical assembly that receives, directs and focuses the therapeutic laser beam to a predetermined location associated with the laser system;c. the optical assembly comprising a z-focus device and an x, y scanner;d. the optical assembly and laser defining a therapeutic laser beam delivery path;e. a patient interface device for associating the cornea of an eye of a patient with the laser system, the patient interface device containing an interface fluid between a transparent element and the cornea;f. the interface fluid positioned in the therapeutic laser beam delivery path;g. a lens shape determination assembly comprising: i. a scanned coherent light source to provide an illumination beam;ii. an x, y scanner;iii. a z-focus device;iv. an image capture device for providing observed data;v. the processor associated with the image capture device and for determining a position of the cataractous natural crystalline lens with respect to the laser, whereby the processor receives actual observed data from the image capture device; and,vi. wherein the light source, the x, y scanner of the lens shape determination assembly, the z-focus device of the lens shape determination assembly, and image capture device define an illumination beam path;vii. whereby the illumination beam path passes through the interface fluid; and,h. the processor is capable of modeling a shape for the cataractous natural crystalline lens with respect to the laser. 12. The laser system of claim 11, wherein the light source is a laser diode. 13. The laser system of claim 11, wherein the image capture device comprises a camera. 14. The laser system of claim 11, wherein the camera is in a Scheimpflug configuration. 15. The laser system of claim 11, wherein the therapeutic laser beam predetermined position is coincident with the determined shape for the cataractous natural crystalline lens of the eye. 16. The laser system of claim 11, wherein the therapeutic laser beam predetermined position is based upon the determined shape for the cataractous natural crystalline lens of the eye.
