An activatable adhesive that is formulated to readily absorb energy from a given radiation source, an activatable adhesive label that incorporates such an activatable adhesive, a system for activating such labels, and related methods and uses are described. The activatable adhesive includes a plasticizer, a tackifier, and an adhesive base polymer that includes butyl acrylate, styrene, methyl methacrylate, methacrylic acid, and acrylic acid.

A label assembly comprising a facestock layer and a heat activatable adhesive layer, and a functional coating layer disposed between the adhesive layer and the facestock layer, wherein the heat activatable adhesive layer comprises: 20 to 35 wt % of a base polymer including at least one lower alkyl acrylate selected from the group consisting of methyl acrylate, ethyl acrylate, butyl acrylate and 2-ethylhexyl acrylate, styrene, methyl methacrylate, methacrylic acid, acrylic acid,at least one multifunctional monomer, andat least one chain transfer agent, wherein the concentrations of the above components of the base polymer are:12 to 48 wt % of the at least one lower alkyl acrylate,23 to 78 wt % of styrene,3 to 30 wt % of methyl methacrylate,1 to 2 wt % of methacrylate acid,1 to 3 wt % of acrylic acid,0.5 to 2.5 wt % of the at least one multifunctional monomer, and1.0 to 4.0 wt % of the at least one chain transfer agent,50 to 75 wt % of a plasticizer, and5 to 20 wt % of a tackifier. 2. The label assembly of claim 1 wherein the facestock layer includes paper or a polymeric film, and the functional coating layer includes at least one of a barrier material, a primer material, and a reflective material. 3. The label assembly according to claim 1, wherein the adhesive base polymer has a weight average molecular weight within a range of from 10,000 Daltons to 150,000 Daltons. 4. The label assembly according to claim 1, wherein the adhesive base polymer has a glass transition temperature Tg above 25° C., wherein the plasticizer has a melting point above 40° C., and wherein the tackifier has a melting point in a range from 50° C. to 120° C. 5. The label assembly according to claim 1, wherein the plasticizer comprises a benzoate compound selected from the group consisting of glyceryl tribenzoate, 1,4-cyclohexane dimethanol dibenzoate, and combinations thereof. 6. The label assembly according to claim 1, wherein the plasticizer comprises glyceryl tribenzoate. 7. A label comprising: a facestock layer; andan activatable, polymerized adhesive layer that is coupled to the facestock layer and includes: i. 20 to 35 wt % of an adhesive base polymer comprising butyl acrylate, styrene, methyl methacrylate, methacrylic acid, acrylic acid, at least one multifunctional monomer, and at least one chain transfer agent,ii 50 to 75 wt % of a plasticizer comprising a benzoate compound, andiii. 5 to 20 wt % a tackifier. 8. The label according to claim 7 wherein: the label is configured to be exposed to a radiant energy;the radiant energy has a wavelength and an intensity that results in the adhesive layer becoming tacky after exposure to the radiant energy; andthe facestock layer is not discolored after the exposure of the label to the radiant energy. 9. The label according to claim 7 wherein the facestock layer is made of a material selected from the group consisting of a paper, a polymer film, a metallized paper, a paper backed foil, and a metal foil. 10. The label according to claim 7, wherein the adhesive base polymer has a weight average molecular weight within a range of from 10,000 Daltons to 150,000 Daltons. 11. The label assembly according to claim 7, wherein the adhesive base polymer has a glass transition temperature Tg above 25° C., wherein the plasticizer has a melting point above 40° C., and wherein the tackifier has a melting point in a range from 50° C. to 120° C. 12. The label according to claim 7, wherein the benzoate compound is selected from the group consisting of glyceryl tribenzoate, 1,4-cyclohexane dimethanol dibenzoate, and combinations thereof. 13. The label according to claim 7, wherein the benzoate compound comprises glyceryl tribenzoate. 14. Use of the label assembly of claim 1 in a printer. 15. Use of the label of claim 7 in a printer.
