An assembly for joining tissue portions is provided and includes an anvil assembly and a body portion juxtaposed with respect to one another along a shaft and arranged so as to be approximated with respect to one another; and an applicator disposed between the body portion and anvil assembly and configured for retaining a wound treatment material therein. The applicator has channels arranged for dispensing the wound treatment material therefrom onto an interface between the tissue portions. A method of joining the tissue portions is also provided and includes the steps of dispensing the wound treatment material from the applicator so as to distribute wound treatment material onto an interface between a first tissue portion and a second tissue portion; and approximating the anvil assembly and the body portion to one another so that the first and second tissue portions are in contact with one another.

A method of joining a first tissue section and a second tissue section, comprising: approximating an anvil member of an anvil assembly having a first tissue section secured thereto and a distal end of a body portion of a surgical stapling device having a second tissue section secured thereto, the
1. A method of joining a first tissue section and a second tissue section, comprising: approximating an anvil member of an anvil assembly having a first tissue section secured thereto and a distal end of a body portion of a surgical stapling device having a second tissue section secured thereto, the anvil assembly including a stem supporting an applicator thereon, the applicator including a wound treatment material retained therein and a manifold having channels radially oriented and open at lateral sides thereof for dispensing the wound treatment material therefrom;dispensing the wound treatment material from the applicator radially outward through at least one of the channels of the manifold to distribute the wound treatment material onto at least one of the first or second tissue sections; andfurther approximating the anvil member and the distal end of the body portion so that the first and second tissue sections are in contact with one another and the wound treatment material is disposed therebetween. 2. The method according to claim 1, further comprising positioning the anvil member within the first tissue section and positioning the distal end of the body portion within the second tissue section prior to approximating the anvil member and the distal end of the body portion. 3. The method according to claim 1, wherein the surgical stapling device includes a rotatable grip member, and wherein approximating the anvil member and the distal end of the body portion includes rotating the rotatable grip member. 4. The method according to claim 1, further comprising securing the stem of the anvil assembly to the distal end portion of the body portion of the surgical stapling device prior to approximating the anvil member and the distal end of the body portion. 5. The method according to claim 1, wherein the applicator includes a sleeve containing the wound treatment material therein and the channels of the manifold are in fluid communication with an interior of the sleeve, and wherein dispensing the wound treatment material includes moving the wound treatment material through the sleeve and out through the channels of the manifold. 6. The method according to claim 5, wherein the surgical stapling device includes a handle assembly including an actuator, and wherein moving the wound treatment material through the sleeve includes actuating the actuator on the handle assembly. 7. The method according to claim 5, wherein the body portion of the surgical stapling device includes a connection member, and further comprising sliding a proximal end of the sleeve over the connection member prior to approximating the anvil member and the distal end of the body portion. 8. The method according to claim 7, further comprising locking the anvil assembly onto the connection member subsequent to sliding the proximal end of the sleeve over the connection member. 9. The method according to claim 8, wherein locking the anvil assembly onto the connection member includes rotating the connection member and the sleeve relative to each other. 10. The method according to claim 5, wherein the wound treatment material is retained within an ampoule selectively positioned with the sleeve, and wherein dispensing the wound treatment material includes compressing the ampoule to move the wound treatment material out of the ampoule and into the sleeve. 11. The method according to claim 10, wherein a shaft of the body portion and the sleeve form a plunger, and wherein compressing the ampoule includes forcing the wound treatment material out of the ampoule by the plunger. 12. The method according to claim 1, further comprising firing the surgical stapling device to expel staples retained within the body portion through the first and second tissue sections. 13. The method according to claim 12, wherein firing the surgical stapling device includes actuating a knife disposed radially inward of the staples to sever the first and second tissue sections. 14. The method according to claim 1, further comprising squeezing the wound treatment material between the first and second tissue sections for a time sufficient to cure the first and second tissue sections to one another subsequent to further approximating the anvil member and the distal end of the body portion. 15. A method of joining a first tissue section and a second tissue section, comprising: sliding a proximal end of a sleeve of an applicator over a connection member of a surgical stapling apparatus;approximating an anvil member of an anvil assembly having a first tissue section secured thereto and a distal end of a body portion of the surgical stapling device having a second tissue section secured thereto subsequent to sliding the proximal end of the sleeve over the connection member, the anvil assembly including a stem supporting the applicator thereon, the applicator including the sleeve containing a wound treatment material therein and a manifold having channels in fluid communication with an interior of the sleeve for dispensing the wound treatment material therefrom;dispensing the wound treatment material from the applicator by moving the wound treatment material through the sleeve and out through the channels of the manifold to distribute the wound treatment material onto at least one of the first or second tissue sections; andfurther approximating the anvil member and the distal end of the body portion so that the first and second tissue sections are in contact with one another and the wound treatment material is disposed therebetween. 16. The method according to claim 15, further comprising locking the anvil assembly onto the connection member subsequent to sliding the proximal end of the sleeve over the connection member. 17. The method according to claim 16, wherein locking the anvil assembly onto the connection member includes rotating the connection member and the sleeve relative to each other. 18. A method of joining a first tissue section and a second tissue section, comprising: approximating an anvil member of an anvil assembly having a first tissue section secured thereto and a distal end of a body portion of a surgical stapling device having a second tissue section secured thereto, the anvil assembly including a stem supporting an applicator thereon, the applicator including a sleeve containing a wound treatment material therein and a manifold having channels in fluid communication with an interior of the sleeve for dispensing the wound treatment material therefrom, the wound treatment material retained within an ampoule selectively positioned with the sleeve;dispensing the wound treatment material from the applicator to distribute the wound treatment material onto at least one of the first or second tissue sections by: compressing the ampoule to move the wound treatment material out of the ampoule and into the sleeve; andmoving the wound treatment material through the sleeve and out through the channels of the manifold; andfurther approximating the anvil member and the distal end of the body portion so that the first and second tissue sections are in contact with one another and the wound treatment material is disposed therebetween. 19. The method according to claim 18, wherein a shaft of the body portion and the sleeve form a plunger, and wherein compressing the ampoule includes forcing the wound treatment material out of the ampoule by the plunger.
