In some implementations, the plunger includes a first surface with a seal situated at an edge of the surface. The seal is adapted for sealing against the inner walls of the infusing container as the plunger moves within the container. The plunger also includes a second surface extending from the first surface and defining a second chamber. At least a portion of the extract flow openings are situated at a depth either above or below the first surface along the vertical axis.

An apparatus for creating and separating an infused extract from a mixture of an infusible material and the extract, the apparatus comprising: a container having one or more vertical inner walls oriented parallel to a vertical axis of the container;a plunger adapted to be inserted into the container, wherein the plunger is adapted to be moved within the container along the vertical axis thereof, wherein the plunger in turn includes: a handle adapted to move the plunger within the container along the vertical axis thereof;a first wall transverse to the vertical axis and including a plurality of extract flow openings therethrough, wherein at least one peripheral seal is coupled to the first wall at one or more edges of the first wall, wherein the at least one peripheral seal is adapted for sealing engagement with the one or more vertical inner walls of the container as the plunger is moved within the container;a second wall coupled to and extending downwardly from the first wall, and at least partially defining and surrounding a chamber configured to permit extract to flow therethrough, the second wall being spaced inwardly from the one or more vertical inner walls of the container; anda third wall coupled to the second wall and substantially parallel to the first wall, the third wall including a plurality of extract flow openings therethrough,wherein the first wall, the peripheral seal, the second wall, and the third wall cooperate to divide a volume of the container into a lower reservoir for receiving a mixture of infusible material and extract and an upper reservoir for receiving extract separated from the infusible material,wherein extract flows from the lower reservoir, through the plurality of extract flow openings in the third wall, through the chamber, and through the plurality of extract flow openings in the first wall as the plunger is pushed downwardly,wherein the first wall, the second wall, and the third wall partition off a portion of the lower reservoir to define the chamber, wherein the first wall defines a top of the chamber the second wall defines a side of the chamber, and the third wall defines a bottom of the chamber, andwherein the chamber and the one or more vertical inner walls of the container are configured to accommodate floating infusible material to direct infusible material away from the third wall to facilitate flow of infused extract through the plurality of extract flow openings through the third wall, through the chamber, and through the plurality of extract flow openings through the first wall. 2. The apparatus according to claim 1, wherein said plurality of extract flow openings define at least one fluid filter. 3. The apparatus according to claim 1, wherein said first wall is discoid in shape, and wherein said plunger is adapted to fit within the container, the container including a cylindrical inner wall. 4. The apparatus according to claim 1, wherein said second wall is one of cylindrical in shape. 5. The apparatus according to claim 2, wherein said at least one fluid filter includes a mesh defining a plurality of apertures therein. 6. The apparatus according to claim 2, wherein said at least one fluid filter includes a screen defining a plurality of apertures therein. 7. The apparatus according to claim 2, wherein said at least one fluid filter includes a polymeric material. 8. The apparatus according to claim 2, wherein said at least one fluid filter includes a ceramic material. 9. The apparatus according to claim 2, wherein said at least one fluid filter includes a composite material. 10. The apparatus according to claim 2, wherein said at least one fluid filter includes a cloth material. 11. The apparatus according to claim 2, wherein said at least one fluid filter includes a paper material. 12. The apparatus according to claim 2, wherein said at least one fluid filter includes a felt material. 13. The apparatus according to claim 2, wherein said at least one fluid filter includes a porous material layer defining a plurality of apertures therein. 14. The apparatus according to claim 2, wherein said at least one fluid filter includes a removable porous surface layer defining a plurality of apertures therein. 15. The apparatus according to claim 1, wherein said second wall is frustoconical in shape. 16. The apparatus according to claim 1, wherein said second wall is imperforate along its entire length.
