The retractable vehicle step of claim 1, wherein the step member has a width greater than a width of the pair of support arms. 3. The retractable vehicle step of claim 1, wherein the first pair of rotation axes and the second pair of rotation axes are each horizontal axes. 4. The retractable vehicle step of claim 1, wherein the step member is configured to move downwards and outboard when moving from the retracted position to the extended position. 5. The retractable vehicle step of claim 1, wherein the force is applied by at least one deployment stop on one of the pair of support arms. 6. The retractable vehicle step of claim 1, wherein the force prevents further outboard motion of the retractable vehicle step. 7. The retractable vehicle step of claim 1, wherein an angle formed between a plane extending inboard along an upper surface of the step member and a plane extending outboard formed by passing through the second pair of rotation axes is between 20 and 80 degrees. 8. The retractable vehicle step of claim 7, wherein the angle is between 40 and 60 degrees. 9. The retractable vehicle step of claim 1, further comprising a motor to move the step member between the retracted position and the extended position. 10. The retractable vehicle step of claim 1, wherein at least one of the pair of support arms includes a tapered section. 11. The retractable vehicle step of claim 1, wherein the second pair of rotation axes are positioned above the step member in the extended position. 12. The retractable vehicle step of claim 1, wherein the location between the first pair of rotation axes and the second pair of rotation axes when in the extended position is also below the first pair of rotation axes and above the second pair of rotation axes when in the extended position. 13. The retractable vehicle step of claim 1, wherein the pair of support arms are configured such that, when the step member is in the retracted position, a downward oriented force applied to a stepping surface of the step member will be resisted at least partially by contact between the first support arm and the second support arm. 14. The retractable vehicle step of claim 1, wherein the first and second pairs of rotation axes and the pair of support arms are configured such that, when the step member moves from the retracted position to the extended position, an initial motion of at least a portion of a stepping surface of the step member will comprise an upward component. 15. A vehicle having a retractable vehicle step, the vehicle comprising: a retractable vehicle step comprising: a frame configured to connect to a vehicle;a pair of support arms rotatably connected at a first end of the pair of support arms to the frame at a first pair of rotation axes;a support bracket rotatably connected to a second end of the pair of arms at a second pair of rotation axes; anda step member connected to the support bracket;wherein the pair of support arms are configured to pivotably move the support bracket and the step member between a retracted position and an extended position, the extended position located outboard of the retracted position;wherein a force is exerted on a first support arm of the pair of support arms and a second support arm of the pair of support arms at a location between the first pair of rotation axes and the second pair of rotation axes when in the extended position; andwherein the retractable vehicle step is self-energizing in the retracted position. 16. The vehicle of claim 12, wherein the first pair of rotation axes and the second pair of rotation axes are each horizontal axes. 17. The vehicle of claim 12, wherein the force is applied by at least one deployment stop on one of the pair of support arms. 18. The vehicle of claim 12, wherein the force prevents further outboard motion. 19. The vehicle of claim 12, wherein an angle formed between a plane extending inboard along an upper surface of the step member and a plane extending outboard formed by passing through the second pair of rotation axes is between 20 and 80 degrees. 20. The vehicle of claim 16, wherein the angle is between 40 and 60 degrees. 21. The vehicle of claim 12, further comprising a motor to move the step member between the retracted position and the extended position. 22. The vehicle of claim 12, wherein at least one of the pair of support arms includes a tapered section. 23. The vehicle of claim 15, wherein the second pair of rotation axes are positioned above the step member in the extended position. 24. The vehicle of claim 15, wherein the location between the first pair of rotation axes and the second pair of rotation axes when in the extended position is also below the first pair of rotation axes and above the second pair of rotation axes when in the extended position. 25. The vehicle of claim 15, wherein the pair of support arms are configured such that, when the step member is in the retracted position, a downward oriented force applied to a stepping surface of the step member will be resisted at least partially by contact between the first support arm and the second support arm. 26. The vehicle of claim 15, wherein the first and second pairs of rotation axes and the pair of support arms are configured such that, when the step member moves from the retracted position to the extended position, an initial motion of at least a portion of a stepping surface of the step member will comprise an upward component.
