A method of preventing capsular opacification and fibrosis after cataract extraction and and/or preventing fibrosis around a shunt or stent after glaucoma surgery is disclosed herein. In the cataract procedure, after the cortex and nucleus of the natural lens with the cataract has been removed, a photosensitizer is applied inside the lens capsule, a posterior portion of the lens capsule is irradiated so as to activate cross-linkers and prevent capsular opacification and fibrosis, and an intraocular lens is inserted into the lens capsule. In the glaucoma procedure, a fluid drainage opening is formed and/or a stent is inserted into the eye, a photosensitizer is applied inside an anterior chamber of the eye so that a diffused stream of the photosensitizer travels through the fluid drainage opening or the stent, and the tissue surrounding the fluid drainage opening or the stent is irradiated so as to activate cross-linkers and prevent fibrosis.

1. A method of preventing fibrosis around a shunt or stent, said method comprising the steps of: forming a fluid drainage opening in a wall of an eye of a patient and/or implanting a stent in the eye of the patient to treat glaucoma;after the fluid drainage opening has been formed and/or the stent has been implanted, applying a photosensitizer inside an anterior chamber of the eye so that a diffused stream of the photosensitizer travels through the fluid drainage opening or the stent, thereby permeating the tissue surrounding the fluid drainage opening or the stent, the photosensitizer facilitating cross-linking of the tissue surrounding the fluid drainage opening or the stent; andirradiating the tissue surrounding the fluid drainage opening or the stent so as to activate cross-linkers in the tissue surrounding the fluid drainage opening or the stent, and thereby prevent fibrosis around the fluid drainage opening or stent outflow. 2. The method according to claim 1, wherein the step of forming a fluid drainage opening in a wall of an eye of a patient and/or implanting a stent comprises implanting a stent in the eye of the patient. 3. The method according to claim 2, wherein the stent comprises a flexible tube with an internal coating and an external coating provided thereon. 4. The method according to claim 3, wherein the internal coating and the external coating of the stent is formed from a substance selected from the group consisting of collagen, elastin, polyethylene glycol (PEG), and combinations thereof. 5. The method according to claim 2, wherein the stent is formed from a silicone-based material or a mixture of polymers, the mixture of polymers comprising acrylic, hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA), or a combination of acrylic and hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA). 6. The method according to claim 2, wherein the stent has a diameter between approximately 50 microns and approximately 700 microns, and the stent has a length between approximately 5 millimeters and approximately 15 millimeters. 7. The method according to claim 2, further comprising the step of: prior to implanting the stent in the eye of the patient, constructing the stent by three-dimensionally printing the stent. 8. The method according to claim 2, wherein the step of implanting the stent in the eye of the patient comprises inserting the stent using forceps or microforceps. 9. The method according to claim 2, wherein the stent comprises an inlet and an outlet, the outlet of the stent being open to the subconjunctival space of the eye. 10. The method according to claim 2, wherein the step of implanting the stent in the eye of the patient comprises implanting the stent under the subconjunctiva of the eye or over the choroid of the eye. 11. The method according to claim 2, wherein the step of implanting the stent in the eye of the patient comprises implanting the stent using a syringe having needle end portion for penetrating a wall of the eye. 12. The method according to claim 2, wherein the stent is coated with a photosensitizer prior to being implanted in the eye so that, upon implantation in the eye, the photosensitizer is released by the stent into the tissue surrounding the stent. 13. The method according to claim 2, wherein the method further comprises the step of: prior to implanting the stent in the eye of the patient, injecting a solution comprising liquid collagen and hyaluronic acid into the subconjunctival space of the eye so as to create a space for the stent; andwherein the step of irradiating the tissue surrounding the stent so as to activate cross-linkers in the tissue surrounding the stent further comprises irradiating the solution comprising the liquid collagen and the hyaluronic acid in the subconjunctival space of the eye so as to form a honeycomb structure around the stent outflow, thereby facilitating the draining of aqueous fluid from the stent and preventing encapsulation of the stent. 14. The method according to claim 1, wherein the photosensitizer comprises riboflavin. 15. The method according to claim 1, wherein the step of applying the photosensitizer inside the anterior chamber of the eye comprises injecting the photosensitizer inside the anterior chamber using a needle extending into the anterior chamber of the eye. 16. The method according to claim 1, wherein the step of irradiating the tissue surrounding the fluid drainage opening or the stent so as to activate cross-linkers in the tissue surrounding the fluid drainage opening or the stent comprises irradiating the tissue surrounding the fluid drainage opening or the stent using light delivered by a fiber optic to prevent the obstruction of the fluid drainage opening or encapsulation of the stent. 17. The method according to claim 16, wherein the light is applied to the tissue surrounding the fluid drainage opening or the stent by manipulating the fiber optic such that the light is painted on the tissue surrounding the fluid drainage opening or the stent. 18. The method according to claim 16, wherein the fiber optic delivers ultraviolet light or another wavelength of light. 19. The method according to claim 1, further comprising the step of: applying the photosensitizer inside the anterior chamber of the eye one or more additional times and irradiating the tissue surrounding the fluid drainage opening or the stent one or more additional times to cross-link the tissue surrounding the fluid drainage opening or the stent so as to prevent any cellular invasion in an area surrounding the fluid drainage opening or the stent after the initial formation of the fluid drainage opening or the initial implantation of the stent. 20. A method of preventing capsular opacification and fibrosis after cataract extraction and preventing fibrosis around a shunt or stent, said method comprising the steps of: removing a cortex and nucleus of a natural lens containing a cataract from a lens capsule of the eye of the patient;after the cortex and nucleus of the natural lens with the cataract has been removed, applying a photosensitizer inside the lens capsule so that the photosensitizer permeates a posterior portion of the lens capsule, the photosensitizer facilitating cross-linking of the tissue in the posterior portion of the lens capsule;irradiating the posterior portion of the lens capsule so as to activate cross-linkers in the tissue in the posterior portion of the lens capsule, and thereby damage the remaining lens epithelial cells in the lens capsule with the irradiated light so as to prevent capsular opacification and fibrosis;after the tissue in the posterior portion of the lens capsule has been irradiated, inserting an intraocular lens into the lens capsule of the eye so as to replace the cortex and nucleus of the natural lens that was removed from the eye;forming a fluid drainage opening in a wall of the eye of the patient and/or implanting a stent in the eye of the patient to treat glaucoma;after the fluid drainage opening has been formed and/or the stent has been implanted, applying a photosensitizer inside the eye so that a diffused stream of the photosensitizer travels through the fluid drainage opening or the stent, thereby permeating the tissue surrounding the fluid drainage opening or the stent, the photosensitizer facilitating cross-linking of the tissue surrounding the fluid drainage opening or the stent; andirradiating the tissue surrounding the fluid drainage opening or the stent so as to activate cross-linkers in the tissue surrounding the fluid drainage opening or the stent, and thereby prevent fibrosis around the fluid drainage opening or stent outflow.
