A metric of forward link geometry of observed transmission signals is determined. An indicator of channel quality value is determined as a function of the observed transmission signals. An access sequence is selected, randomly, from one group of a plurality of groups of access sequences, wherein each of the plurality of groups of access sequences correspond to different ranges of channel quality values.

The method set forth in claim 1, wherein a plurality of access sequences in the plurality of groups of access sequences are distributed non-uniformly. 6. The method set forth in claim 1, wherein transmitting further comprises transmitting in accordance with a Frequency Division Multiplex (FDM) scheme. 7. The method set forth in claim 1, wherein transmitting further comprises transmitting in accordance with a Code Division Multiplex (CDM) scheme. 8. The method set forth in claim 1, wherein transmitting further comprises transmitting in accordance with an Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiple Access (OFDMA) scheme. 9. The method set forth in claim 1, further comprising determining a quality of service requirement associated with the data available for transmission, wherein selecting the group of access sequences from the plurality of groups of access sequences is based at least in part on the quality of service requirement. 10. The method set forth in claim 1, wherein the selected access sequence is transmitted during an initial access attempt, the initial access attempt requesting a connection with an access point. 11. In a wireless communication system, an apparatus to determine an indicator of channel quality, the apparatus comprising: a receiver configured to receive observed transmissions;a processor configured to determine a metric of the observed transmission, to determine an estimate of channel quality based at least in part on the metric of the observed transmission, and to determine an amount of data available for transmission;a memory element configured to store a plurality of groups of access sequences;a selector configured to select a group of access sequence from a plurality of groups of access sequences based at least in part on a correspondence between the determined estimate of channel quality and a range of channel quality values and comparing the amount of data available for transmission to a predetermined level of available data; anda transmitter configured to transmit an access sequence selected from the selected group of access sequences. 12. The apparatus set forth in claim 11, wherein the processor further comprises determining a ratio of received pilot power to noise. 13. The apparatus set forth in claim 11, wherein a plurality of access sequences in the plurality of groups of access sequences are distributed non-uniformly. 14. The apparatus set forth in claim 11, wherein the transmitter is further configured to transmit in accordance with a Frequency Division Multiplex (FDM) scheme. 15. In a wireless communication system, an apparatus for determining an indicator of channel quality, the apparatus comprising: means for determining a metric of an observed transmission;means for determining an estimate of channel quality based at least in part on the metric of the observed transmission;means for an amount of data available for transmission;means for selecting a group of access sequences from a plurality of groups of access sequences based at least in part on a correspondence between the determined estimate of channel quality and a range of channel quality values and comparing the amount of data available for transmission to a predetermined level of available data; andmeans for transmitting an access sequence selected from the selected group of access sequence. 20. The apparatus set forth in claim 19, wherein the means for determining metric of the observed transmission further comprises means for determining a power of an observed pilot signal. 21. The apparatus set forth in claim 19, wherein a plurality of access sequences in the plurality of groups of access sequences are distributed non-uniformly. 22. The apparatus set forth in claim 19, wherein the means for transmitting further comprises means for transmitting in accordance with a Frequency Division Multiplex (FDM) scheme. 23. The apparatus set forth in claim 19, wherein the means for transmitting further comprises means for transmitting in accordance with a Code Division Multiplex (CDM) scheme. 24.
