A golf aid system for assisting a user with a golf shot on a golf course includes a user tracking system configured to determine the location of the user on the golf course, a portable electronic device with a display screen, and a processor. The processor, which is operable to communicate with the user tracking system and the portable electronic device, is configured to determine one or more target locations on the golf course, with each of the target locations representing a recommended target for a respective one of the golf clubs. The processor directs the portable electronic device to display an indicator of the respective golf club proximate the corresponding target location via the display screen, such that the user perceives at least a portion of the indicator to be coincident with the corresponding one of the target locations.

1. A method for assisting a user with a golf shot on a golf course using a portable electronic device, the portable electronic device including an electronic display and a processor operable to communicatively connect to a remote data storage device and/or a club statistic sensor, the method comprising: receiving, via the portable electronic device, location data indicative of a location of the user on the golf course;determining a current hole of the user on the golf course based on the received location data;receiving, via the portable electronic device from the remote data storage device and/or the club statistic sensor, a club statistic corresponding to a golf club of a plurality of available golf clubs;determining, for the current hole of the user based on the received club statistic, a recommended target location by: determining an accuracy metric for each of the plurality of available golf clubs; andselecting the recommended target location on the current hole of the golf course by: determining a plurality of statistical landing zones, each of the statistical landing zones corresponding to the accuracy metric for one of the available golf clubs;determining a lie score for each of the statistical landing zones;determining a distance between each of the statistical landing zones and a pin of the current hole;combining, for each of the statistical landing zones, the respective lie score and the respective distance to form a respective risk-weighted score for the statistical landing zone; andselecting as the recommended target location one of the plurality of statistical landing zones that provides a best risk-weighted score; anddirecting the electronic display of the portable electronic device to display an indicator of the recommended target location to the user. 2. The method of claim 1 further comprising: determining, based on a club indication received by the portable electronic device from a club sensor, a club type for the golf club selected from the plurality of available golf clubs;wherein determining the recommended target location for the golf shot is further based on the club type. 3. The method of claim 2, wherein the club sensor is attached to the selected golf club and communicates wirelessly with the portable electronic device. 4. The method of claim 2, wherein determining the recommended target location further includes: determining a plurality of target locations on the current hole of the golf course, the recommended target location corresponding to a statistical mean landing spot for the user with the selected golf club, and each of the other determined target locations corresponding to a respective standard deviation from the statistical mean landing spot;directing the electronic display of the portable electronic device to display a respective indicator for each of the determined target locations. 5. The method of claim 4, wherein each of the plurality of target locations is displayed via the electronic display as a graphical symbol positioned at a corresponding location on the golf course. 6. The method of claim 5, wherein the recommended target location is displayed as a first type of graphical symbol and each of the other determined target locations is displayed as a second type of graphical symbol. 7. The method of claim 1, further comprising receiving, via the portable electronic device from the remote data storage device, play statistics aggregated for one or more golf rounds of the user, wherein determining the recommended target location is further based on the received play statistics of the user. 8. The method of claim 7, wherein the play statistics include a respective total number of strokes for each of the one or more rounds, a respective score relative to par for each of the one or more rounds, a respective number of fairways hit for each of the one or more rounds, a respective number of greens in regulation for each of the one or more rounds, or a respective average number of putts for each of the one or more rounds, or any combination thereof. 9. The method of claim 1, further comprising receiving, via the portable electronic device from the remote data storage device, shot statistics associated with one or more prior shots of the user, wherein determining the recommended target location is further based on the received shot statistics. 10. The method of claim 9, wherein the shot statistics include a respective ball speed for each of the one or more prior shots, a respective ball spin rate for each of the one or more prior shots, or a respective ball carry for each of the one or more prior shots, or any combination thereof. 11. The method of claim 1, wherein the club statistic includes an average carry distance, an average total distance, an accuracy metric, or an amount of spray, or any combination thereof, for the user with the selected club type. 12. The method of claim 1, further comprising directing the electronic display of the portable electronic device to display a plurality of traces, each of the traces depicting a respective expected flight path for each of a plurality of potential shots for the current hole of the user. 13. The method of claim 1, wherein the electronic display of the portable electronic device includes a heads up display configured to be worn on the user's head, the heads up display having a transparent display screen configured to display the indicator within a field of view of the user. 14. A golf aid system for assisting a user with a golf shot on a golf course using a portable electronic device, the portable electronic device including a processor, an electronic display, and a wireless communication device, the golf aid system comprising: a club statistic sensor operable to communicate with the portable electronic device via the wireless communication device;a data storage device operable to communicate with the portable electronic device via the wireless communication device, the data storage device storing club statistics for a plurality of available golf clubs; anda set of processor-executable instructions configured to be stored on the portable electronic device, the set of processor-executable instructions being operable to cause the processor to: receive, via the portable electronic device, location data indicative of a location of the user on the golf course;determine a current hole of the user on the golf course based on the received location data;receive, via the portable electronic device from the data storage device and/or the club statistic sensor, a club statistic corresponding to a golf club of a plurality of available golf clubs;determine, for the current hole of the user based on the received club statistic, a recommended target location for the golf shot by:determining an accuracy metric for each of the available golf clubs; andselecting the recommended target location on the current hole by: determining a plurality of statistical landing zones, each of the statistical landing zones corresponding to the accuracy metric for one of the available golf clubs;determining a lie score for each of the statistical landing zones;determining a distance between each of the statistical landing zones and a pin of the current hole;combining, for each of the statistical landing zones, the respective lie score and distance to form a respective risk-weighted score for the statistical landing zone; andselecting as the recommended target location one of the statistical landing zones that provides a best risk-weighted score; anddirect the electronic display to display an indicator of the recommended target location to the user. 15. The golf aid system of claim 14, wherein the instructions are further operable to cause the processor to receive, via the portable electronic device from the data storage device, play statistics aggregated for one or more golf rounds of the user, wherein determining the recommended target location is further based on the received play statistics. 16.
