IV. Results of the study 1. The distributional characteristics of major radionuclides Seawater and sediments samples were collected in the adjacent seas of Korea (Yellow Sea, South Sea, East Sea) for the period of 1999 ~ 2001 and the concentrations of key artificial radionuclides were determined to describe their distributional characteristics. The average concentrations in the surface water of adjacent seas of Korea ranged between 2.34 ~ 2.56 mBq kg-1 for dissolved 137Cs, 1.63 ~ 2.17 mBq kg-1 for dissolved 90Sr and no seasonal and regional difference was observed. However, Pu showed clear seasonal and regional variation. Average 239,240Pu concentration in seawater was the lowest in the Yellow Sea, compared to the South Sea and East Sea, possibly due to removal from surface ocean to sea floor. Vertical distribution of key artificial radionuclides showed clear variation with each radionuclides and region. The concentrations of dissolved 137Cs, 239,240Pu and 90Sr were homogenous in the Yellow Sea with the water depth of less than 100 m. In case of the East Sea with the water depth of more than 2,000 m, it was high at the surface mixed layer (0~200 m) and decreased with depth. The inventory of dissolved 137Cs and 90Sr at the surface mixed layer represented about 25% of the water column. The inventory of dissolved 239,240Pu in the surface mixed layer were presented only about 7 % of the water column. The 239,240Pu concentration was increased with depth and the highest at the depth of 1,100 m. It suggests that dissolved 239,240Pu is preferentially removed by particle formation in the surface mixed layer and sinks to the deeper depth and then releases again to the seawater due to the decomposition of sinking materials. Therefore, the proportion of inventories of 137Cs and 239,240Pu between water column and sediments showed a clear difference each others. The 239,240Pu inventory in the water column of Yellow Sea was 0.44 Bq m-2. However, the 239,240Pu inventory in the bottom sediment was 10.34 Bq m-2 and represented about 96 % of the total inventory. It suggests that in the Yellow Sea, which has shallow and high suspended sediments load, 239,240Pu is preferentially removed from seawater to the sediments. Contrary to the Yellow Sea, the 239,240Pu inventory in water column was about 44.65 Bq m-2 with twice higher than that (25 Bq m-2) in the bottom sediment, suggesting most of the 239,240Pu remain in seawater. The average levels of dissolved 137Cs, 239,240Pu and 90Sr are approximately similar to those in the open ocean contaminated only by global fallout and much lower than those in the North Sea and Irish Sea. Our all research results were sent to IAEA and compiled to the Asia-Pacific Marine Radioactivity Database (ASPAMARD). The adjacent seas of Korea have much influence by Chinese rivers such as Hwanghe and Changjiang river. However, data on the key artificial radionuclides in Chinese rivers are still unknown. Therefore, it is required the continuous observation on the land and beharior of artificial radionuclides and co-research work with neighboring countries, particularly China. 2. Identification of major radionuclides Activity ratios of 238Pu/239,240Pu, 239,240Pu/137Cs, 239,240Pu/90Sr and 137Cs/90Sr were measured in the seawater, sediments and rain of the adjacent seas of Korea during 1999 to 2001 to identify the origin of these artificial radionuclides. The activity ratio of 238Pu/239,240Pu in the surface sediments of Yellow Sea and East Sea ranged from 0.01 to 0.05 with average of 0.03, which is close to that in global fallout (0.026). Averaged concentration ratios of 137Cs/90Sr were 1.72 and 3.45 in the Yellow Sea and the East Sea, respectively, due to different biogeochemical pathways of these artificial radionuclides in the deeper depth. The average activity ratios of 239,240Pu/90Sr and 239,240Pu/137Cs measured since 1994 were 0.008, 0.007 and 2.71 and a little lower than those of global fallout due to the differences of particle affinity in rain water. Average activity ratios of 239,240Pu/90Sr, 239,240Pu/137Cs in the surface water of the adjacent seas were much lower than that of global fallout. These ratios were, however, close to those in the surface ocean water contaminated only by global fallout. Our all results obtained seem to confirm that this artificial radioactivity is due mainly to global fallout. However, joint research with China is required to describe the correct origin of artificial radionuclides because the adjacent seas of Korea are affected by the Yellow dust and rivers from Chinese. 3. Major input pathways of radionuclides into the sea Atmospheric input of key artificial radionuclides The atmospheric input of key artificial radionuclides (239+240Pu, 80Sr, 137Cs) into the sea was determined using long-term monitoring of radionuclides concentrations in the rain and aerosol samples since 1994. Average annual precipitation since 1994 was 1,183 mm and a clear seasonal and annual variation was observed. The amount of rain during the period of June ~ August represented more than 50 % of annual precipitation. In particular, it represented more than 80 % in 1995 and 2001. Monthly flux of the fallout dust ranged from 1.21 to 16.79 g m-2 month-1 with geometric mean of 5.41 g m-2 month-1. It was low in summer and high in winter and spring. 239+240Pu, 90Sr and 137Cs concentration in precipitation were 0.05 ~ 131 (mean: 1.29) μBq kg-1, 0.04 ~ 3.69 (Avg.: 0.31) mBq kg-1, 0.04 ~ 1.04 (mean: 0.17) mBq kg-1, respectively. Their concentrations were the highest during the period of Yellow Dust Storm (April ~ May) and the lowest in summer wet monsoon (June ~ August). The difference in theirs concentartions may arise from difference in the fallout flux of these radionuclides and the precipitation. Wet deposition rates ranged 3.5 ~ 1,231 μBq m-2d-1 (geometric mean :42.36) for 239+240Pu, 0.25 ~ 201.84 mBq m-2 d-1 (geometric mean : 9.60) for 90Sr, and 2.62 ~ 24.71 mBq m-2 d-1 (geometric mean : 8.61) for 137Cs, respectively. Their deposition rates were the highest in the period of Yellow Dust Storm and the lowest in summer wet monsoon. The annual wet deposition fluxes of 239,240Pu, 90Sr and 137Cs to the Yellow Sea were estimated to be 0.57, 137.5, 75.4 GBq yr-1, respectively. In addition to the wet depositions, the annual dry deposition flux of 239+240Pu ranged from 4.46 to 10.17 mBq m-2 yr-1, representing more than 70 % of total deposition flux (wet + dry) in the period of Yellow Dust Storm (March ~ May). Riverine input of key artificial radionuclides Surface waters of major rivers in Korea (Han, Geum, Yeongsan, Seomjin, Nakdong River) were collected to estimate the fluxes of key artificial radionuclides to the adjacent seas of Korea. Dissolved concentrations in river water flowing into the Yellow Sea ranged 0.46 ~ 0.68 (mean : 0.43±0.09) mBq kg-1 for 137Cs, 2.70 ~ 3.73 (mean : 2.94±0.17) μBq kg-1 for 239,240Pu, and 2.31 ~ 3.39 (mean : 3.15±0.09) mBq kg-1 for 90Sr, respectively and no clear difference in concentrations was observed. If we assume these values were representative for all river waters included Chinese rivers, then, the total annual riverine export fluxes of dissolved 137Cs, 239,240Pu and 90Sr to the Yellow Sea were 50.4, 0.35 and 371.8 GBq yr-1, respectively. Key artificial radionuclides input from the ocean boundaries (Yellow Sea/East China Sea, Cheju Strait) The budgets of key artificial radionuclides were constructed using a simple box model. We assumed the Yellow Sea as a box. We first constructed water budget and later constructed salt budget, then we estimated the exchange rate between the Yellow Sea and the East China Sea. The export flux of dissolved 137Cs by net water outflow (Residual flow) from the Yellow Sea was about 402.6 GBq yr-1 and the flux across the Yellow Sea/East China Sea boundaries was about 105.3 GBq yr-1. Therefore, the net internal source (△137Cs) was about 154.6 GBq kg-1, which supposed to be added to the seawater by desorption from suspended particulate matter and efflux from the bottom sediment. The export flux of dissolved 239,240Pu by net water outflow was about 0.62 GBq yr-1, and the flux across the boundaries was about 24.4 GBq yr-1. The net internal sink (△239,240Pu) was about 24.7 GBq yr-1, which supposed to be removed from seawater to the bottom sediments by the scavenging. The estimated annual fluxes of dissolved 137Cs, 239,240Pu and 90Sr through the Cheju Strait were 42.7×103, 152.2, and 26.2×103 GBq yr-1, respectively. These results were 80 times for 137Cs and 3 times for 239,240Pu higher than the export fluxes across the Yellow Sea/East China Sea boundaries. If we consider the flux across the strait between the Cheju and Kyushu, the key artificial radionuclides transport into the South Sea will be much increased sharply. Therefore,a , a more precise budget estimation on the key artificial radionuclides of South Sea and East Sea shoud be construct to manage the environmental radioacitivty quality in near future. 4. The description on the behavior of key artificial radionuclides Effective environmental half-life of key artificial radionuclides The effective environmental half-life of 137Cs was computed to be about 11.2 years, using regression analyses of 137Cs concentrations measured in the surface water of East Sea for the period of 1993 ~ 2000. It is shorter than the half-life (about 30 years) of 137Cs. It suggests that 137Cs concentrations in the surface water of East Sea decreased sharply than those expected by its own half-life due to the effective environmental removed processes. Previous data suggested that observed effective environmental half-life of 137Cs in the surface water of East Sea is in the range of 9.1 ~ 22.8 years in the adjacent seas of Japan for the period of 1984 ~ 1995. The residence time of dissolved 137Cs in the surface of the East Sea was estimated to be about 25 years, using its effective environmental half-life. It is 1/4 of that (100 years) in the surface water of open ocean, which may be attributed to the difference of primary production between the East Sea (150 ~ 230 gC m-2 yr-1) and open ocean (50 gC m-2 yr-1). Sediment accumulation rate of key artificial radionuclides 210Pb derived sediment accumulation rates in the Yellow Sea were 28 to 772 mg cm-2 yr-1 (0.03 ~ 0.57 cm yr-1), respectively. Its rates was low in the central part and high in the adjacent sea of Changjiang estuary. Concentrations of 239,240Pu and 90Sr in the surface sediments were relatively high in the central Yellow Sea and low in the Jiangsu coastal area with a peak at the depth of 21 ~ 23 cm. Surface maximum of 239,240Pu activity concentration suggests the active deposition of recent muds in the central Yellow Sea. Sediment inventories for 90Sr ranged from 50 ~ 196 Bq m-2 in the central Yellow Sea and more than 273 Bq m-2 in the ancient delta off the Jiangsu coast. Sediment inventories for 39,240Pu were 10 ~ 12 Bq m-2 and more than 52 Bq m-2 in the ancient delta off Jiangsu coast. However, its inventories for 90Sr were 1/10 of the total cumulative atmospheric fallout in Tokyo since 1986. Sediment incorportion rates for 239,240Pu and 90Sr ranged were 0.2 ~ 0.3 and 0.2 ~ 2.1 Bq m-2 yr-1, respectively, in the central Yellow Sea. And also its rates was high in the Jiangsu coast as 1.2 Bq m-2 yr-1 for 239,240Pu and 4.8 Bq m-2 yr-1 for 90Sr, respectively. Sinking fluxes of key artificial radionuclides Automated time-series sediment traps were moored to collect sinking particles at the depth of 1,000 and 2,000 m of the East Sea for the period of 1998 ~ 2001, to estimate the sinking fluxes of key artificial radionuclides. Sinking materials fluxes were high in spring with a high primary production of phytoplankton and low in summer with a strong stratification in water column. 137Cs concentrations in sinking materials ranged from 0.13 to 2.46 dpm g-1 with an average of 0.68 dpm g-1 (or 11.33 mBq g-1) at the depth of 1,000 m, and from 0.18 to 4.17 dpm g-1 with an average of 1.00 dpm g-1 (or 16.67 mBq g-1) at the depth of 2,000 m. It was shown the clear seasonal variation even at the same depth. The sinking fluxes of 137Cs ranged from 0.20 to 1.09 dpm m-2 d-1 with an average of 0.25 dpm m-2 d-1 (or 4.17 mBq m-2 d-1) at the depth of 1,000 m and from 0.04 to 1.40 dpm m-2 d-1 with an average of 0.31 dpm m-2 d-1 (or 5.17 mBq m-2 d-1), respectively. No clear difference betwen 1,000 m and 2,000 m depths. In general, sinking fluxes of key radionuclides were positively correlated with sinking material fluxes, while concentrations of key radionuclides decrease with increasing the sinking material flux. Therefore, the sinking material fluxes appear to control the removal of these radionuclides from the water column to the sea floor. The concentration factor of key artificial radionuclides in marine organisms Marine organisms were collected in the adjacent seas of Korea to analyze the concentration of key artificial radionuclides and estimate the their concentration factor. 137Cs concentration in the whole body of macro-algae (eel grass) ranged from 0.06 to 0.10 Bq kg-1-fresh, and no regional difference was observed. The concentration factor of 137Cs in the macro-algae (eel grass) ranged from 22 to 40 with an average of 27.8 and it with in the reported value of IAEA. 239,240Pu and 90Sr concentrations in the muscle of fishes ranged 0.10 ~ 0.79 Bq kg-1-fresh for 137Cs, 0.10 ~ 1.32 mBq kg-1-fresh for 239,240Pu, and 0.35 ~ 12.60 mBq kg-1-fresh for 90Sr, respectively. It is shown the clear difference with species due to the difference of their food habits. However, their concentration factors ranged 40 ~ 314 for 137Cs, and 19 ~ 70 for 239,240Pu, respectively, and are fall in the ranges reported by IAEA. Distribution coefficient of key artificial radionuclides Sea waters of more than 6,000 L at the surface water of Yellow Sea were filtered to estimate key natural (210Po) and artificial radionuclide (137Cs) adsorbed onto suspended matterials. The distribution coefficients of 210Po were shown the clear seasonal difference. In winter, the concentrations of particulate 210Po were higher than those of dissolved 210Po, due to the resuspended bottom sediments by active vertical mixing throughout the water column. In summer, however, the concentrations of dissolved 210Po were increased toward the central part, suggesting the its removal from seawater by sinking. The distribution coefficient of 137Cs in the Yellow Sea was about 1.82×105 cm3 g-1. 5. Development of hydrodynamic models for the circulation of the Yellow Sea and the East China Sea Two types of three-dimensional (3D) circulation models for the Yellow Sea and the East China Sea have been developed to obtain the essential information for the study of the radionuclides movement as well as suspended sediment distribution. The model uses the finite-difference approximation on the horizontal plane and the Galerkin function method in the vertical direction. The barotropic model developed as 1st step calculates the oceanic current in the Yellow Sea and the East China Sea. As a salient feature the bottom stress is represented in a linear form and its coefficient is space-varying according to the M2 tidal current amplitudes to take into account tide enhanced bottom frictional dissipation. The 3D diagnostic model as 2nd step produces seasonal variations in circulation of the Yellow Sea and the East China Sea driven by M2 tide, oceanic inflows-outflows across the open boundary, density gradient and wind forcing. The 3D barotropic model is used for the determination of the suspended sediment, while the 3D diagnostic model is used for the model experiments of conservative radionuclides in the central part of the Yellow Sea and the East China Sea. 6. Development of a numerical model for the distribution of suspended sediment in the Yellow Sea and the East China Sea A two-dimensional finite-difference model has been developed to alculate the concentration of suspended sediment which is prerequisite to the modeling of the non-conservative radionuclides transport in the Yellow Sea and the East China Sea. The model defines the tide-induced bottom friction which is proportional to its amplitude, the wave-induced bottom friction, consolidation and flocculation effects. The bottom friction induced by tidal current acts as a prime mechanism to determine the overall feature of the suspended sediment in the Yellow Sea and the East China Sea. Effects of advection is secondary and the wave action affects mainly the concentration in the shallow sea regions. The model results are qualitatively in good agreement with a satellite image and field data collected on a vessel. However, the model responds sensitively to the change in the consolidation in bottom sediment as well as the value of the critical shear stresses for erosion and deposition. It is therefore indicated that future study needs to be directed to collect the information on bottom properties. 7. Development of transport models for the radionuclides in the Yellow Sea and the East China Sea Three types of models (2D finite-difference model, 3D finite- difference Galerkin function model and 3D particle tracking model) have been developed to calculate the behaviors of radionuclides accidentally released to the Yellow Sea and the East china Sea. The 2D model might be of use in a long-term range prediction of the transport of conservative radioactive materials, while the 3D Galerkin function model in a mid-range prediction of the transport of conservative radioactive materials. The 3D particle tracking model based on Monte Carlo method is applicable to both conservative (137Cs) and non-conservative radionuclides (139,240Pu) but in a relatively short term range prediction of their behaviors. Interactions among dissolved raionuclides, suspended matter and active bottom sediment are dealt with by means of a stochastic approach. The 2D model experiment has been carried out in the East China Sea with continuous artificial input through Taiwan Strait. The 3D Galerkin function model has been tested in the central part of the Yellow Sea. The velocity information produced from the 3D diagnostic circulation model on a coarse grid has been adapted to the finer grid through an interpolation procedure. The 3D particle model has been tested on a simplified channel, comparing results in the presence/absence of advective flow. V. Conclusion and suggestions This research have been conducted for three years (the 1st stage; year 1999, the 2nd stage; year 2000~2001). The project tried to address objectively the distribution, origin and behavior of key artificial radionuclides in the seas adjacent to the Korean Peninsula. We attained all objectives of this project as follows; (i) to determine distributioin patterns of key artificial radionuclides in the adjacent seas of Korea (Yellow Sea, South Sea, East Sea), (ii) to investigate sources of key artificial radionuclides, (iii) to elucidate input pathways of key artificial radionuclides (atmosphere, river, and oceanic boundaries), (iv) to describe the behavior of key artificial radionuclides (for example; effective environmental half-life, residence time, distribution coefficient between seawater and suspended sediments, bio-concentratioin factor, sediment accumulation rate etc.), (v) to build a predictive capacity for disposal patterns of key artificial radionuclides. This research will greatly impact the neighboring field. Information on the behavior of these artificial radionuclides will be reduced the cost of environmental pollutants assessment and contribute to better understanding transport processes of non-radionuclides pollutants (heavy metals etc.) that behave chemically or physically the same as these radionuclides. Database on Asia-Pacific marine radioactivity, including all results from this research, was published by IAEA. It will be very useful in assessing the background levels of key artificial radionuclides in the adjacent seas of Korea, and having an advantage diplomatically at the confidence building on problems on marine environmental radioactivity. As a result of this research work a monitoring network has been set up to close monitor the marine environmental radioactivity in the adjacent seas of Korea. However, the sound knowledge of contaminants and radionuclides will be required to enhance our regional seas programs with neighboring countries, particularly China and North Korea.
