1. FIRST YEAR Research shall be conducted to develop low-temperature SCR catalysts using urea solution as a reducing agent and having a NOx removal rate of not less than 90 percent at a reaction temperature of $180-220^{\circ}C$ and at a space velocity of 100,000 $hr^{-1}$ i
1. FIRST YEAR Research shall be conducted to develop low-temperature SCR catalysts using urea solution as a reducing agent and having a NOx removal rate of not less than 90 percent at a reaction temperature of $180-220^{\circ}C$ and at a space velocity of 100,000 $hr^{-1}$ in a fixed bed reactor. For this, a variety of metallic oxides and zeolite-based catalysts shall be tested in terms of their productivity and efficiency in NOx removal to select optimal catalysts. In order to enhance the efficiency of the reducing agent, the thermal decomposition of urea shall be analyzed and then a model shall be developed to determine the rate of thermal decomposition. This model would be well used to give design criteria for thermal decomposition equipment of urea solution. In addition, a spray nozzle shall be developed to meet the requirements for the thermal decomposition conditions. 2. SECOND YEAR Low-temperature SCR catalysts having a NOx removal rate of not less than 90 percent at a reaction temperature of $150-200^{\circ}C$ and a space velocity of 100,000 $hr^{-1}$ in a fixed bed reactor shall be developed. For this, the properties of catalysts, including the toxicity by sulfur dioxides, and their efficiency in NOx removal shall be identified. The thermal decomposition of the optimal catalysts selected in the first year shall be analyzed to obtain acceptable thermal decomposition conditions. Under these conditions, the urea solution shall be applied as a reducing agent to determine how much the catalysts are effective in NOx removal. With the urea solution spray nozzle and the thermal decomposition conditions obtained in the first year, an optimal urea solution spray system shall be developed, and then optimal design factors shall be decided for the construction of a pilot plant, which will be operated in the third year of the project. 3. THIRD YEAR Honeycomb catalysts made by the washcoating method and the urea solution spray system developed in the second year of the project shall be used for the pilot plant having an exhaust removal capacity of 1,000 $Nm^3$/hr to evaluate its performance and durability. The pilot plant shall be operated at a reaction temperature of $180-220^{\circ}C$ and at a space velocity of 5,000-10,000 $hr^{-1}$ to have a NOx removal rate of not less than 90 percent. For the evaluation, the honeycomb catalysts shall be installed in the pilot plant to determine its efficiency in NOx removal, the mechanical strength, and the toxicity by sulfur dioxides. In addition, the thermal decomposition of urea solution shall be analyzed to optimize the operation and design criteria for the thermal decomposition reactor. A design model for the honeycomb catalysts shall be developed taking into account the diffusion resistance by the honeycomb structure to determine the best criteria for catalyst design.
