In this study, the standard and specification of the water treatment chemicals were revised by modifying the test method of granular activated carbon (GAC) used as a water treatment chemical. The domestic and overseas specifications of GAC were investigated. The domestic production and usage quantity of GAC at drinking water treatment plants (DWTPs) was also investigated. The adsorption capacity of GAC was tested at different particle size. The 6 kinds of coal- and coconut-base GAC used as a water treatment chemical were pulverized to A to D group whose particle size (unit: ) was A<45, 45B<53, 53C<63, 63D<75, respectively. The specific surface area, iodine uptake, phenol value, ABS value, and methylene blue decolorization were tested and the results are as follows. Ministry of Environment (ME) of Korea listed 14 items as the specification of GAC used as the water treatment chemical. Japan water works association (JWWA) and American water works association (AWWA) listed 18 and 9 items, respectively, as the specification of GAC. While all items of the specification of ME and AWWA are mandatory, the 9 items in JWWA specification are optional. In Korea, 16 companies mainly produce GAC as a water treatment chemical and 24,300 ton of coal- and coconut-based GACs were produced in 2006. Among 21 DWTPs, coconut- and coal-based GACs were used in 52% and 33% of DWTPs, respectively. In 72% of DWTPs, GAC was replaced at every 3 to 4 years. 48% of DWTPs have tested 16 specification items at the purchase of GAC. Both coal- and coconut-based GACs adsorbed iodine regardless of particle size and specific surface area. However, phenol value, ABS value, and methylene blue decolorization increased as the particle size was reduced from 75 to 45 in both GACs. Therefore, it is considered that the particle size of GAC affected phenol value, ABS value, and methylene blue decolorization except for specific surface area and iodine uptake.
