Ⅳ. Research Contents and Results
1. Development of the application technology through satellites in climate field A. Optimization of the atmospheric motion vector extraction algorithm The atmospheric motion vector extraction algorithm is composed of the step to track the wind vectors that determine wind direction and wind speed and the step to assign the proper height to the vectors. In order to derive the optimum generation conditions that can increase the accuracy of the generated satellite wind field, we calculated the target size for a single wind vector and the wind vector that is spatially continuous. We performed the sensitivity tests on the target box size, grid size, time interval between satellite images, and the method to determine the central position of a target. The verification using the sonde observation data showed that the number of generated high-quality wind vectors and the accuracy of the satellite wind field were sensitive to each of the items defined previously.
The optimization of the satellite wind field generation algorithm decided the conditions that the number of the high-quality wind vectors should be the maximum and the wind speed bias and the vector RMSE should be the minimum.
Under those conditions, the optimum target and grid sizes all were 32 km × 32 km in the case of the infrared channel (Figure 1 (Left)). The derived optimum target size was 112 km × 112 km in the case of the water vapor channel. Additionally, as regards the time interval between the images, it was found that the number of generated high-quality wind vectors was larger (93.6%) when the images in 15-minute interval was applied than in 30-minute interval (Figure 1 (Right)).
The method to assign height to the wind vectors was improved to increase the accuracy of the satellite wind field. To set up the temperature that represents the effect of the cloud inside the target when assigning height, we used to employ the average temperature of the cold pixels (15%) previously. But, we changed the method so that the representative temperature can be determined by applying the weighting factors to the individual pixels in the target. The improved height assignment method was applied to the generation of the satellite wind field of the water vapor channel, and the result showed that the number of the high-quality wind vectors was increased by 5% or more and the wind speed bias was diminished by 14% or more, indicating that the accuracy was improved (Figure 2).
B. Establishment of the basis for the mesoscale satellite wind field generation The mesoscale atmospheric motions that were not be able to be observed by the conventional synoptic scale satellite wind field including typhoon and regional torrential rains can be detected through the mesoscale satellite wind field. The NIMR established the mesoscale satellite wind field generation algorithm using the high-resolution visible channel of a geostationary meteorological satellite. The high-resolution visible channel has the advantages that the observation resolution is higher than that of the images that are used in actual work, and it can effectively detect the atmospheric phenomena at the low layer. In this year, the accuracy of the mesoscale satellite wind field generation was improved by optimizing the target selection and the height assigning correction method.
If the wind field is generated using the visible channel images with the observation resolution of 1 km, the optimal target size is determined as 32 km × 32 km (Figure 3). To supplement the height assigning problem in lower clouds when generating the mesoscale wind field, various calibration methods were tried and the effects were analyzed. The result showed that re-assigning the wind field height was effective in increasing the high-quality vector generation if there is a temperature inversion layer in the lower troposphere.
Figure 4 compares the synaptic scale satellite wind field generated through the infrared channel and the meso-scale satellite wind field generated through the high-resolution visible channel in the case of the typhoon "Omais" on March 23, 2010. It shows that the mesoscale wind field optimized in the lower layer under the pressure 700 hPa expressed the atmospheric motion around the typhoon better than the synaptic scale wind field, and the number of the wind vectors was also larger.
C. Generation of the high-resolution satellite sea surface temperature merged field The NIMR has generated the daily average merged field of 25 km resolution in the East Asian region using the multi-sensor satellite sea surface temperature data such as MTSAT-1R, AVHRR, and AMSR-E. The satellite sea surface temperature merged field using multi-sensors is generated considering the unique properties of the sensors such as the accuracy of the sea surface temperature, temporal and spatial resolution, and the generation characteristics of the individual satellites. In this year, we generated the sea surface temperature merged field with the high resolution of 5 km so as to increase the usability in numerical models, and compared and verified the field data with the data generated from the international institution. The data were compared with the OSTIA (Operational Sea Surface Temperature and Sea Ice Analysis) sea surface temperature data of the U.K. Meteorological Agency that merges and generates the satellite and ground observation data between the year 2007 through 2009, and the result showed that the mean RMS error was 0.94 ℃ (Figure 5).
Although the RMS error with the buoy observation data was increased as the spatial resolution was increased, the detailed variation of the sea current was better expressed (Figure 6).
2. Development of the retrieval technology for satellite-based atmospheric environmental information
A. Establishment of the all-time monitoring system with Fourier transform infrared spectroradiometer (FT-IR)
For the purpose of retrieving and utilizing atmospheric environment information from high-resolution infrared spectrum, the NIMR introduced the automatic cooling Fourier transform infrared spectroradiometer (FT-IR) that allows full-time observation and remote controlling (Figure 7 and Table 1). The FT-IR set up in Anmyeon-do (the global atmosphere watch center) is run on the basis of 24-hour all-time observation except the rainfall days, and generating the retrieval of the temperature and humidity profiles from the downward infrared spectrum measured at every 8 minutes. Figure 8(a) shows the temperature profile retrieved from the ground-based FT-IR. Using the continuously retrieved temperature profile, the time-series distribution data of the vertical temperature is produced as shown in Figure 8(b). Additionally, studies are on-going works on the retrieval of the environmental information such as greenhouse gas concentration from the ground-based FT-IR.
B. Integrated observation to validate the satellite-based retrieval for atmospheric environmental information
Integrated observation was carried out for two times (May and November) at the global atmosphere watch center in Anmyeon-do in 2010. The purpose of the integrated observation is to validate the accuracy of the atmospheric environmental information retrieved from the satellite and the ground-based high-resolution infrared spectrum data such as the temperature and humidity profiles and the greenhouse gas concentration, and to improve the retrieval algorithm. The observation was carried out with the radiosonde observation and aircraft sampling for greenhouse gases simultaneously (Figure 9).
Table 2 shows the comparison of the temperature and humidity profiles retrieved from the FT-IR and the satellites (AQUA/AIRS, METOP/IASI) with those of the radiosonde observation data during the integrated observation period. The data in table 2 are the mean RMSE in the height range below 3 km (1000~ 700 hPa) where the ground-based FT-IR observation is valid. The accuracy of the FT-IR temperature retrieval was higher than that of the satellites and the quality of the AIRS humidity retrieval was better than that of the FT-IR and METOP/IASI.
Figure 10 compares the carbon dioxide (CO2) and methane (CH4) concentrations retrieved from AQUA/AIRS and METOP/IASI with those observed from the aircraft sampling during the integrated observation period. Since satellite retrievals for CO2 and CH4 represent total column concentration weighted at the height of 5-15 km, they are generally lower than the concentrations measured by the aircraft sampling.
Analysis of the vertical greenhouse gases concentration characteristics showed that they are greatly dependent on the atmospheric transport during the aircraft observation. In particular, in the case of the observation performed in November when an air was come from China (Figure 11), the concentrations of carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide (CO) were higher than those of May by 5 ppm and 100 ppb, respectively. Also, the smaller CO ₂/CO slope in November than in May indicates that the efficiency of fossil fuel combustion in China is low (Figure 12). Aircraft observation will be continuously carried out to verify the greenhouse gases concentration based on the ground-based and satellite-based observation and to analyze the influence according to atmospheric transport more systematically.
3. Development of the Technology to Utilize GPM
A. Ground validation of GPM and international joint research
The GPM satellite project is being carried out to produce high-quality global satellite precipitation field in three-hour interval using a microwave sensor that is appropriate for precipitation observation. The KMA is carrying out the research to develop the ground validation technology of the GPM satellite precipitation based on the dense ground observation network composed of 10 meteorological AWS. Since the international joint research with U.S. NASA started at the end of 2009, we have developed a prototype software to analyze the satellite precipitation characteristics and validate the GPM precipitation on the ground in Korean Peninsula and the East Asian region.
In this year, we performed the statistical analysis of the reflectivity and the rain rate using the four S-band radars and AWS data in two years (‘06.8∼’08.5) within the TRMM satellite observation region in order to analyze the characteristics of the satellite precipitation in Korea Peninsula. The comparison of the vertical distribution of the reflectivity observed with the radars installed on the satellite (TRMM/PR) and the ground radars showed that the reflectivity observed by the Gosan radar was higher than the ground observation value by 2-3 dBZ all over the height (Figure 13). In addition, the difference in the daily mean reflectivity was compared between the ground radars and the satellite radars, and it was found that the difference was less than ±2 dBZ over the entire period, indicating that the variation was relatively stable (Figure 14). However, in the case of Jindo and Pusan, the fluctuation in the reflectivity difference was relatively large over time, and thus the consistency in the equipment management such as calibration may need to be examined.
The rain rate was compared among the results from the satellite microwave imaging instrument (TRMM/TMI), the satellite radars, and the ground radars (Figure 15), and the result showed that the probability density functions (PDF) of rain rate was well matched between the satellite radars and the ground radars in general, although there was a little difference depending on the types of the precipitation. However, it was found that the TRMM/TMI rain rate was overestimated to some degree in the case of stratiform cloud precipitation. The physical properties of satellite precipitation will be investigated more in detail through the study of the vertical precipitation structure and the precipitation particle distribution in the future.
B. Research on the retrieval of soil moisture using the microwave satellite data
The moisture in soil directly affects the heat and water circulation between the atmosphere and the ground surface, and the data can be used as the input data for numerical models and for the water resource management. The NIMR has developed the soil moisture retrieval algorithm using the microwave satellite data (Aqua/AMSR-E). The NIMR soil moisture retrieval algorithm developed purely by the technology of KMA allows quick calculation through a simple procedure without using the prior data about the surface.
In 2010, we compared the ECMWF re-analysis data and the satellite-based soil moisture data from the U.S. NASA and analyzed the tempo-spatial characteristics. The NIMR soil moisture data was similar to that of NASA overall, but the values were lower in general particularly in the ares where vegetation is concentrated. This result is because the radiation energy from soil is attenuated by vegetation, which also reveals the limitation of the NIMR algorithm that does not employ the prior data of the surface. In this year, the algorithm was improved so that the effect of vegetation can be calibrated using the vegetation information produced from the satellite. The overall distribution of the soil moisture was similar to that of NASA but it was relatively low in deserts and vegetation regions (Figure 16). Still, there are aspects where improvement is required in the global distribution, but the algorithm is meaningful in the sense that the daily soil moisture data can be obtained in the global scale using the earth observation satellite data where the soil moisture data cannot be obtained by ground observation.
C. Establishment of the sea ice monitoring system using the microwave satellite data
The sea ice in the polar regions is drastically reducing by climate change due to global warming. Since the reduced sea ice in the polar regions affects not only the global weather change but also the climate change through the interaction among the ground surface, atmosphere, land and ice, many countries in the world react sensitively to the change of the sea ice in the arctic region. In 2010, the NIMR established the real-time arctic sea ice monitoring system using the Aqua/AMSR-E microwave satellite data for the monitoring of the arctic sea ice. Using the data gathered from June, 2002 when the Aqua satellite started observation to the present, we have analyzed and monitored the changes in the area of the arctic sea ice and the surface properties in the unit of a week. Further, the trend in the monthly, seasonal and yearly change is also analyzed together.
The changing trend in the year 2010 showed that the arctic sea ice area was the largest in April since the observation started by the Aqua satellite, but it was rapidly reduced and the value in June was even lower than the previous minimum summer sea ice area recorded in 2007. However, the trend of the reducing area became weak from July on by the effect of the atmospheric circulation around the North Pole. But, the third minimum area was recorded in September. The weekly monitoring result is provided to the Climate Science Bureau regularly and used as the auxiliary data for long-term forecast.
