Ⅳ. Results
Section 1. Development of methodologies for the analysis of micro-meteorological/micro-climatological data
The tall tower measurement is a very convenient method to study the atmospheric vertical profile and the turbulence in the atmospheric boundary layer. The vertical profiles and the turbulence structures of wind, temperature, humidity are required to measure mean and fluctuation qualities of these variables at several layers in the boundary layer.
1. Meteorological measuring instruments and methods to produce mean values
Table 1. shows the guide to meteorological instruments and methods of observation (WMO, 2008) All meteorological variables except for the total amount are required to produce data for every minute averaged data. So that without real time data quality assurance and quality control, many data can be missed easily.
2. Data Quality assurance and Quality control
(1) Quality Assurance for the measuring program
(2) Quality control of measured data
3. Quality control of tower measured turbulence data
Quality control parameters of tower measured turbulence data are required to check following; § Spike check
§ Amplitude resolution
§ Dropouts
§ Absolute limits
§ Higher-moment statistics
§ Non-stationarity of horizontal wind
§ Lag correlation
§ Vertical structure
4. Quality control of the measured eddy covariance
For the quality control of the eddy covariance, the time series of variables are checked all parameters including spike, amplitude resolution dropouts, absolute limits, higher-moment statistics, lag correlation and vertical structure.
These checked data are used to calculate the eddy covariance and then test the conditions of (1) steady state, (2) integral turbulence characteristic and (3) the relative position of the turbulence measurement instrument (e.g. Sonic anemometer) to the mean wind direction.
The quality of the data are determined by the degree of satisfaction of the above three conditions.
Section 2. Quantitive analysis of the characteristic features of micro-meteorology/micro-climate at the site
1. Location of the site
The Boseung Global Standard Meteorological Observatory is located in the center of th homogeneous flat area of 20 km2. The south of the site is the Deugyang bay and the north of it is located mountains. The crop fields are surrounded the site.
2. characteristic features of micro-meteorology/micro-climatology
The time series of temperature, relative humidity, wind speed, solar radiation, precipitation and atmospheric pressure observed at the site for two years (2011-2012) are analysed to see the site specific micro-meteorological conditions.
The annual mean temperature is 13.61 ℃ with the monthly mean minimum temperature of 1.5 ℃ in February and monthly mean maximum temperature of 27.09 ℃ in August. The hourly mean minimum temperature for the year is ?9.2 ℃ in January while that of the maximum is 34.9 ℃ in August.
Monthly mean maximum wind speed is 5.0 m/s in January 2011 but that of minimum is 2.4 m/s in July 2012. However, the hourly mean maximum wind speed of 23.9 m/s in August and 22.1 m/s in September 2012 are caused by the typhoons of Tembin and Sanba, respectively.
The wind rose constructed by the two-year measured winds at the site indicates that the site is prevailed by westerlies (65 %) with the annual sea breeze occurrence of 22 %. The sea breeze occurs most frequently during the late April through August when the air temperature at the site is higher than the sea surface temperature at the Deugyang bay.
3. Sea breeze pattern at the site
The measurements of the wind profiler at the site can identify the occurrence of the sea breeze.
The diurnal variations of the vertical wind profile measured by the wind profiler on the day when the sea breeze is not developed (April 23, 2011) show that the westerlies in the boundary layer are prevailed all day long with strong vertical wind shear between the surface wind and the 2 km level wind. The wind is strengthened during the early afternoon at the 2 km height and the low-level nocturnal jet is developed at around 20:00 LST in the 2.5 km level with the wind speed exceeding 25 m/s. The diurnal temperature range on this day is 7.9 ℃ which is lower than the sea surface temperature of 10 ℃ at the Deugyang bay.
On the other hand, on April 20, 2011 the sea breeze has been developed after sunrise at 08 LST with its thickness of 500m. The thickness of the sea breeze layer has deepened with the daytime progress to 1,200 km at 20:00 LST when the sea breeze is ended with the development of the nocturnal jet at the height of 2-3 km. The vertical wind shear between the surface wind and the wind at the 2 km height is very small just like within the mixed layer and this condition is continued until the time when the low-level nocturnal jet is developed. The diurnal temperature range of 16.2 ℃ is much higher than sea surface temperature at the Deugyang bay. The maximum temperature on this day is higher than that on the non-breeze day. The vertical profile of the virtual potential temperature at the lower boundary layer on breeze day shows a stable boundary layer with hogher water vapour mixing ratio.
It is quite clean that the site is predominated by the local circulations including the sea breeze, the low-level nocturnal jet and the formation of the internal boundary layer.
4. Inter-comparisons of vertical profiles measured by the wind profiler, auto-sonde and radiometer It is found that there are large differences measured wind speed and direction between the wind profiler and the auto-sonde. The difference of wind speed is as large as twice of that measured by the wind profiler, however, the difference of the wind direction of these two instruments is about 20 degrees. It is also found that there are large differences in the vertical profiles of temperature and absolute water vapour measured by the auto-sonde and the radiometer. The temperature difference 1000 m above the ground is so large that those profiles cannot be used directly without any evaluations.
Section 3. Instrumentations and utilization of the Boseung tall tower
The instrumentations of the Boseung tall tower are planned to be used for the studies of local circulations in the atmospheric boundary layer, atmospheric environment, agricultural meteorology and the international test-bed site such as the WMO CIMO site and the remote sensing instruments and newly developed instruments. The installations of various different kinds of sensors at the 300 m tall tower and the auxiliary 10 m tower are suggested in Figure 1.
To fulfill more effectively suggested studies and to build up the capacity on the monitoring technology, the following road map for the long range program on the development of monitoring and analysis technology of micro-meteorology/micro-climatology is suggested in Figure 2.
