In this research, a reaction-diffusion model is investigated to understand infective environments in a man-environment-man epidemic model. In addition, we examine two spatio-temporal models, which are an epidemic model with general contact rates and an model with infection period, describing the spread of avian influenza from the bird to the human world. Mathematical results for the solutions to the models are obtained and provide biological interpretation for the results.
In the first year, considering certain epidemic models with spreading fronts, we obtained the spreading-vanishing dichotomy of the bacteria which gives the conditions for the bacteria spreading or vanishing on the whole region using the basic reproduction number. In the second year, we set up two kind of spatio-temporal models describing the spread of avian influenza and examine the property of solutions to the models. The model consists of two sub-models, SI-model and SIR-model, describing the bird infection and the human infection, respectively. First, considering the model with nonlinear contact rates, for bird system, we show that the permanence of susceptible birds and infected birds with avian influenza and provide sufficient conditions for the extinction of infected birds. Further, we show the global existence of non-negative solutions to the proposed parabolic systems and examine the asymptotical property of such solutions. Second, we investigate an influenza model with time-delayed term, which indicates the infection period when the susceptible human are infected by avian influenza virus. We show the permanence of solutions to the model with time-delayed term and discuss the asymptotical stability for three equilibria of the system, namely the disease free equilibrium, the human-endemic equilibrium(the boundary equilibrium) and the full endemic equilibrium(the interior equilibrium). In particular, we study the effect of time-delayed term for the persistence of equilibria of system and the extinction of the birds and the human infected by avan influenza. Furthermore, we verify the obtained results by performing the numerical simulation for three proposed models with fitting data. The research for the proposed models in this project can be extended to the model with vaccination, which is important to prevent the influenza infection. Further, by the extension of the proposed models, we can set up the model describing that the wild birds carry the virus even though we have considered only some domesticated bird populations for the bird system in this project. Based on the accomplishment of this project, we expect consecutive research for other endemic diseases by virus. Furthermore, we can apply the obtained results to the control problem for the preservation of susceptible birds and humans and the extinction of infectible species by diseases.
