IV. Results and Discussion
In this research project, core techniques for realization of submerged floating tunnel have been developed. To analyze the external loads acting on SFT, the influences of current, wave, hydraulic pressure, earthquake, tsunami and etc on SFT are investigated and quantified. Also, the analysis techniques evaluating the behavior of SFT by static, dynamic and impact loadings are developed.
In order to analyze loads by wave and current, boundary element method, numerical wave flume and numerical wave-current flume were used. Motion by seismic and wave excitations to submerged floating tunnels were evaluated. First, we proposed methodologies to apply approximate modeling techniques for the tubes and the ventilation towers, which are connected each other by joints and are fixed by tension legs, as well as to reduce computing time. In addition, various modeling techniques for the seismic loading were compared and evaluated. Throughout the methodologies, we could quickly analyze the transient responses of the dynamic behavior from seismic and wave loadings, and the results were validated as compared to the previous study and checked the contentment of determined limit criteria.
Physical experiments were carried out in a two-dimensional wave flume in order to know motions of the submerged floating tunnel and its hydrodynamic characteristics under wave action. By performing experiments with changing BWR (Buoyancy Weight Ratio), tethering type, water depth and wave conditions, the tunnel motion, tensile force of the tethering lines, and wave force on the tunnel body were examined. The experiments were also made for the condition of twin tunnels, whose characteristics are now being analyzed in detail.
A submerged floating tunnel (SFT) must have enough strength to resist to various external loadings such as bending, torsion, tension, and compression. The expected main deformation of SFT is caused by bending moment. And this bending moment makes tensile stress and compression stress on the wall of SFT. Thus, bending moment is a main affecting factor on the safety of SFT. Until now, a reinforced concrete tunnel was suggested for SFT by other researchers. In this study, an internally confined hollow reinforced concrete tunnel and a double skinned composite tubular tunnel were proposed. And their bending strengths were studied and compared with that of a reinforced concrete tunnel. The analysis results showed the proposed SFT structures had enough strength to guarantee safety.
If fire break out in SFT, it is damaged by thermal loads. Structure of the SFT is able to collapse partially by fire scale and fire exposure time. For this reason, fire resistance design of the SFT must be suggested. Fire resistance performance of SFT could be investigating for fire resistance design of SFT. Fire condition could be expressed fire curves which are suggested by fire scale and fire exposure time. In this study, temperature distributions of the SFT are investigated through FE analysis under various fire conditions. Heat transfer analysis is applied to investigate conduction of heat by fire. And there is to draw the biggest influence fire condition to the SFT from FE analysis results. Also, preliminary study is performed for fire resistance design.
The SFT is impossible to construct under water. In this reason, module connection of the SFT is very important. In this research, module connection method using PC tendons is proposed for safer SFT. Gina profile and omega profile are arranged inside and outside in SFT section. They can cut off sea water perfectly. Thus, proposed module connection is investigated using FE analysis, The analysis results showed the proposed connection had enough strength to guarantee safety.
The local damage and global behavior of the submerged floating tunnel in collision with submerged moving body are simulated for securing safety via commercial hydrocode LS-DYNA. In simulations, a conceptual tunnel section is considered and various penetration and deformation responses with respect to impact velocity, applied materials and collision scenarios are obtained. Finally, for a specific design of submerged floating tunnel, design requirements such as maximum deformation, bending moment and impact forces are analyzed based on force and energy equilibrium.
To evaluate the applicability of SFT in commercial level, concept design of SFT in Mokpo-jeju connection was conducted. The design investigated wave height, current speed, bottom topography, etc. Also, the structural system including tube, connections, mooring lines, foundation, etc were designed. Based on this basic design, the economic feasibility of SFT was evaluated.
