The Human Biomonitoring is a useful method for identifying the sources and exposure pathways of environmental contaminants as to make a proper countermeasures or policies. In order to achieve this goal and set up plans pursuant to Article 14 of the Environmental Health Act (2009), the survey has been officially titled "Korean National Environmental Health Survey (KoNEHS)", as a nationwide population study, which has repeatedly been carried out every 3 years since 2009. The results of the survey will be announced as National Statistics and open its raw data to researchers and the public.
From 2012 until 2014, the 2nd survey was conducted in order to secure representative concentration of hazardous chemicals while considering environmental exposure impact factors.
In 2nd survey, a survey on 400 nationwide sampling units was conducted. The survey included questionnaires, biological samples sampling, the 19 clinical laboratory components analysis and the 21 instrumental analysis of 21 chemicals and metabolites were investigated for 6478 people. All participants were asked to complete a questionnaire, which was composed of 10 parts (including Personal information, housing characteristics, indoor environment, transportation and usual dietary behavior and so on) and 142 questions (including main and detailed questions). All samples were coded before analysis. And analysis were carried out in a random sequence. The chemical analysis in human blood and urine was carried out in 4 laboratories. To ensure quality control standards and reference materials were run together with the samples on a daily basis in all laboratories. External quality control was achieved through participation in domestic programs organised by the Korea Occupational Safety & Health Agency and an international program set by G-EQUAS (German External Quality Assessment), etc.
The proportion of males to females were 42.8 % (2,774) to 57.20 % (3,704), respectively. In an aspect of ages, 50s showed the highest participation rate of 22.2 %. In addition, the participation rate of over 50s is 56.5 %. Compared to the 2010 Korea Census, the participation rate in their 20's was lower, while those of over 50's were relatively higher.
21 environmental chemicals concentrations was appended in terms of subject numbers, arithmetic means, geometric means with 95 % confidence intervals in an appendix. Percentiles was also used to describe the distribution of chemicals concentrations.
All the results of 2nd survey (2012-2014) data will be combined and weighted by four factors, design weight, non response adjustment, post-stratification and extreme weighting value adjustment, and announced as National Statistics.
