The final aim of this study is to develop a biofiltration system integrated with plant vegetation for improving indoor air quality effectively depending on indoor space and characteristics. However, to approach this final goal, several requirements such as constant pressure drops (PDs) and soil moisture contents (SMCs), which influence the capacity design for a proper ventilation rate of biofiltration system, should be satisfied.
Thus, firstly, this research carried out to devleope the maximizing technology of plant biofiltration for improving indoor air quality. Pelleted activated carbon, zeolite, diatomite were suitable for the additional filter media of biofilter system. A mixture of zeolite and activated carbon showed the most excellent purification performance and breakthrough was not appear compare to zeolite single usage. Vertical mixing of additional media showed the best purification performance. Purification of formaldehyde was thought to receive a lot of impact with the water existence. Purifying capability was increased with reducing of the pressure loss when mixing 8% vertical air path in the medium layer. Purification speed and final purification amount were increased as air flow rate was increased, but in more than 10.1cm/s it showed no difference in the performance of the purification rate. Purification efficiency was increased as soil moisture and nitrogen content were increased.
Secondly, fundamental experiment was carried out to adjust a proper wind speed and to ensure a stabilization of initial SMCs within biofilter for uniform distribution of SMCs and PDs, and for normal plant growth, especially avoiding root stress by wind. Therefore, we designed horizontal biofliter models and manufactured them, and then calculated the ventilation rate, air residence time, and air-liquid ration based on the biofilter depending on three levels of wind speed (1, 2, and 3㎝·s-1). The relative humidity (RH) and PD of the humidified air coming out through the soil within the biofilter, and SMC of the soil and plant growth parameters of lettuce and duffy fern grown within biofilter were measured depending on the three levels of wind speed. As a result of wind speed test, 3 ㎝·s-1 was suitable to keep up a proper RH, SMC, and plant growth. Thus, the second experiment was set up to be two levels of initial SMCs (low and high initial SMC, 18.5 and 28.7%) within each biofilter operated and a non-biofiltered control (initial SMC, 29.7%) on the same wind speed (3 ㎝·s-1), and measured on the RH and PD of the air coming out through the soil within the biofilter, and SMC of the soil and plant growth parameters of Humata tyermani grown within biofilter. This result was similar to the first results on RHs, SMCs, and PDs keeping up with constant levels, and three SMCs did not show any significant difference on plant growth parameters. However, two biofiltered SMCs enhanced dry weights of the plants slightly than non-biofiltered SMC. Thus, the stability of this biofiler system keeping up major physical factors(SMC and PD) deserved to be adopted for designing an advanced integrated biofilter model in the near future.
The third study was performed to investigate the stability of soil moisture in controlling air ventilation rate within a horizontal biofilter, and to compare removal efficiency (RE) of indoor air pollutants including fine dust, volatile organic compounds (VOCs), and formaldehyde (HCHO), depending on whether dieffenbachias (Diffenbachia amoena) were planted in the biofilter. The relative humidity, air temperature, and soil moisture contents showed stable values, regardless of the presence of D. amoena, and the plants grew normally in the biofilter. REs for number of fine dust particles (PM10 and PM2.5) within the biofilter filled with only soil were at least 30% and 2%, respectively. REs for number of fine dust particles (PM10 and PM2.5) within the biofilter including the plants were above 40% and 4%, respectively. RE for fine dust (PM10) weight was above 4% and 20%, respectively, in the biofilter containing only soil or soil together with plants. In the case of the biofilter filled with only soil, REs for xylene, ethylbenzene, toluene or total VOC (T-VOC) were each more than 63%; however, REs for benzene and formaldehyde (HCHO) were above 22% and 38%, respectively. In the biofilter with the plants, REs for xylene, ethylbenzene, toluene, and T-VOC were each above 72%, and REs for benzene and HCHO were above 39%. Thus, RE of the biofilter integrated with plants was found to be higher for volatile organic compounds than for fine dust. Hence, the biofilter was very effective for indoor air quality improvement and the effect was higher when integrated with plants.
The fourth study was performed to compare the stability of air flow characteristics and removal efficiency (RE) of fine dust within a wall-typed (vertical) botanical biofilter depending on humidifying cycle and to investigate RE of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) by the biofilter. The biofilter used in this experiment was designed as an integral form of water metering pump, water tank, blower, humidifier, and multi-level planting space in order to be suitable for indoor space utilization. As a result, relative humidity, air temperature, and soil moisture content (SMC) within the biofilter showed stable values regardless of three different humidifying cycles operated by the metering pump. In particular, SMCs were consistently maintained in the range of 27.1-29.7% during all humidifying cycles; moreover, a humidifying cycle of operating for 15 min and pausing for 45 min showed the best horizontal linear regression (y = 0.0008x+ 29.09) on SMC (29.0 ± 0.2%) during 120 hour. REs for number of fine dust (PM10) and ultra-fine dust (PM2.5) particles passed through the biofilter were in the range of 82.7-89.7% and 65.4-73.0%, respectively. RE for weight of PM10 passed through the biofilter was in the range of 58.1-78.9%, depending on humidifying cycle. REs of xylene, ethyl benzene, total VOCs (TVOCs), and toluene passed through the biofilter were in the range of 71.3-75.5%, while REs of benzene and formaldehyde (HCHO) passed through the biofilter were 39.7% and 44.9%, respectively. Hence, it was confirmed that the wall-typed botanical biofilter suitable for indoor plants was very effective for indoor air purification.
The fifth research is to develop a botanical biofiltration system, which combines green interior, biofiltering, and automatic irrigation, which can purify indoor air pollutants according to indoor space and the size of biofilter. The biofilter used in this experiment was designed as an integral form of water metering pump, water tank, blower, humidifier, and multi-level planting space in order to be more suitable for indoor space utilization. This study was performed to compare indoor air quality between the space adjacent to a botanical biofilter and the space away from the biofilter(control) without generation of artificial indoor air pollutants, and to evaluate plant growth depending on multiple floors within the biofilter. Each concentration of indoor air pollutants such as TVOCs, monoxide, and dioxide in the space treated with the biofilter was lower than that of control. Dracaena sanderiana ‘Vitoria’ and Epipremnum aureum ‘N Joy’ also showed normal growth responses regardless of multiple floors within the biofilter. Hence, it was confirmed that the wall-typed botanical biofilter suitable for indoor plants was effective for indoor air purification.
In case of underground living space, there are only exits but no window. As expected, air quality measurements in the underground commercial space varied depending on the number of users associated with commuting time. The concentration of gas phase pollutants was reduced by diffusion. Particulate contamination was reduced by sedimentation, and resuspended when the users increases. For an instance, the dust concentration was lower before cleaning than after. Contaminants varied depending on the type of exercise in underground exercise room. For aerobic exercise, excessive carbon dioxide concentration significantly exceeding the reference level was measured during intensive activities by a number of users. Jumping robes resulted in suspension of fine dust on the floor. Therefore, exercises of underground space need to be planned based on the number of users by exercise types per unit area. Air quality of underground is controlled by the air conditioner. But daily air quality has a great deviation and a small scale underground space does not operate air conditioner very well for an economic reason. For the reasons, it would be necessary to develop plant eco-system design for underground space with affordable operating costs. Foreign cases of indoor green space gathered through Internet search were used as references. Underground plant growth must completely rely on artificial light and artificial watering. Therefore, it is necessary to investigate optimum condition of air purification and develop design suitable for underground planting. The more moisture in medium fixing the plants, the better dust removal effect was. Although underground green biofilter design can be used in various forms, green walls would be the most suitable considering economic efficiency as they accomodate a great amount of plants using a small floor space. In addition, it would be beneficial to adopt waterfall to reduce fine dust concentration as it helps accelerate settling of fine dusts by increasing air humidity and prevents resuspension of dusts precipitated in the water. Typically, Ficus elastica, Chrysalidocarpus lutescens,Spathiphyllum and Anthurium, widely used in interior were found effective in removing fine dust and carbon dioxide than feather moss (Hypnum reptile Michx), ground cover plants. Chlorophytum comosum, Dieffenbachia, Epipremnum aureum, Spathiphyllum, Ardisia pusilla, Clusia rosea, Fatsia japonica, and Illicium anisatum growth appeared to be good at 15, 30, 60, and 120μmol·m-²·s-¹. However, at 120μmol·m-²·s-¹, Dieffenbachia, Ardisia pusilla, Fatsia japonica, and Clusia rosea(as well as in 60μmol·m-²·s-¹) showed excessive growth, which may cause more frequent maintenance. Epipremnum aureum, Spathiphyllum, Ardisia pusilla, Clusia rosea, Fatsia japonica, and Ficus elastica growth appeared to be good with irrigation frequenies of two times/week, once/week, and once/2 weeks. Chlorophytum comosum showed a high mortality with irrigation frequency of once/2weeks, and Dieffenbachia showed a high mortality in two times/week irrigation. In the same amount of light, dust removal effect was found significantly better with white LED when it was compared with different light quality (white, red, blue LED and a fluorescent lamp). When dust removal effects with different white LED intensity (0, 30, 60μmol·m-²·s-¹) were compared, Spathiphyllum was found significantly more effective than Dieffenbachia at 60μmol·m-²·s-¹. Hydroponics green bio-filter was found significantly more effective when used in environments with smoother air flow and more plants. When green wall form of bio-filters (including waterfall) was installed in field, the PM10 removal time was approximately 60 minutes shorter than the control.
