Perfluorooctanesulfonic acid (PFOS) and perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) as persistent organic pollutants (POPs) were investigated in Korean agricultural environment. A total of 204 agricultural sites in South Korea were selected and grouped five by socio-geographical manner to investigate the average residual perfluorochemicals (PFCs) in water and soil. The average concentration of PFOA and PFOS in all area did not exceed 0.1 mg/L in the water and 1.0 mg/kg in the soil. The highest concentration of PFOA and PFOS were 0.177 and 0.626 mg/L in the water and 1.573 and 2.682 mg/kg in the soil, respectively. Site A showed the highest PFCs level in the contamination survey of Nakdong-river, and the concentration was raised in water and soil temporarily during monitoring period. However, the upstream of site A such as site D and F showed lower concentration than site A. It could be assumed that there would be some point pollution in this river area.
Recently persistence organic pollutants (POPs) has been issued on contamination of agricultural environment due to industrialization near farm and classical POPs including emerging POPs such as organochlorine pesticide, dioxins, and PAHs were widely surveyed in agricultural product and the environment. In the same vein, new POPs like perfluorooctanesulfonic acid (PFOS) have been listed on the Stockholm Convention since 2009 and the distribution and environmental guideline for PFOS are studied widely in EU, Korea and USA. However, production and usage for perfluorochemicals (PFCs) are still allowed for industrial purpose, thus the unexpected contamination of PFCs might be possible in agricultural environment and remediation technology for water soluble POPs is required for securing crop safety from the new POPs. Adsorbent like active carbon had been widely considered for elimination and remediation for organic and inorganic contaminants in environment; however the usage was not deeply considered in agricultural environment due to the price and efficiency. But, recently carbon sequestration technology is globally interested to reduce carbon emission and biochar is introduced to a cheap and efficient solid carbon material. In addition to the recent biochar studies showed it has good properties for soil amendment with physicochemical and biological benefits and remediation for organic and inorganic contaminants in agricultural soil and water. However, the variation of phyco-chemical properties of biochar is wide and it is difficult to have constant properties unlike commercial active carbon due to the diverse of biomaterial and thermal process condition. The PFCs adsorption research was reported with active carbon and we reported the adsorption properties with commercially available biochar in Korea in comparison with powdered active carbon (PAC) in here.
Some physicochemical properties of biochar such as pH0, moisture, BET surface area and ash content were analysized. The BET surface area of biochar from rice husks was 2.56 m2/g and the area was increased around three folds after grinding of the rice husks biochar (7.86m2/g). On the other hands, powdered oak biochar showed the highest surface area (189m2/g) among the biochars and PAC as positive control showed 962m2/g of BET surface area. The pH0s of biochars from oak and rice husks were 10.7 and 8.0, and moisture and ash contents ranged from 4.9 to 9.8% and from 42.6 to 49.1%, respectively. Adsorption kads was calculated with pseudo-first order model and the values were 0.09-0.20 min-1 for PFOA and 0.20-0.38min-1 for PFOS. The equilibrium adsorption amounts of the biochars in the mixture of PFOA and PFOS were calculated to 0.95-0.98mmole/g for PFOA and 0.79-0.93mmole/g for PFOS with a little variation between chars in spite of big difference of the surface area. Like the adsorption kinetic values of biochar, PAC showed a similar kads (0.08 min-1 for PFOA and 0.26min-1 for PFOS) and the equilibrium adsorption amount (1.00 mmole/g for PFOA and 0.84 mmole/g for PFOS). Adsorption capacity of biochar was shown the independence from BET surface area and it would be correlated with surface chemistry of oxygenated carbonaceous material that was reported with hydrophilic ionic liquid by Qietal (2014). Thus, the oxygenated carbon chemistry on biochar would be preferentially considered to an important factor to have good adsorption properties for ionic PFCs. And all the biochars showed better adsorption properties for PFOA than PFOS interestingly.
In this study, the contamination of biochars from plant residues and sewage sludge with perfluorooctanesulfonic acid (PFOS) and perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) was examined additionally. The total residual concentrations of PFOA and PFOS in the sludge biochar were 15.8-16.9 ng/g and these values did not decrease significantly after pyrolysis. On the other hand, these PFCs were not found in the biochar from plant sources. In conclusion, the use of the sludge biochar in the agricultural environment should be re-evaluated, since the concentrations of PFCs in the sewage sludge showed no significant decrease after thermal process.
