The purposes of this study was to select promising genetically modified (GM) events that are qualified for risk assessment and dossier documentation. In this study, several GM varieties dveloped by domestic scientists, including insect-resistant Bt rice, drought-resistant rice, multi-virus-resistant potato, and nutrient enhanced soybean were tested and assessed over a one-year trial. The fundamental assessment criteria included 1) suitability for the intended purpose, 2) good agronomic traits in the field, and 3) adaptability to the agronomic environment. Based on the these criteria, 5 event lines from two transgenic crop plants were selected as candidates for risk assessment.
Among candidates from 8 Bt rice lines, Bt-9-30 with Ilmi-byo genetic background and Bt-T-07 with Dongjin-byo genetic background were selected. All 8 lines tested showed relatively strong resistance compared to their non-transgenic counterparts in a feeding experiment with rice leaf roller larvae. In the field test, Bt-9-30 and Bt-T-07 lines showed 106 % and 90 % yield, respectively compared to their counterparts. Overall, both Bt-9-30 and Bt-T-07 showed no difference in growth pattern, physiology, or adaptability to the agroecosystem.
Among 131 transgenic soybean lines from groups PMD1, PMD2, and PMD3 with egf, IGF, and Trx transgenes, respectively, 6 lines were selected as candidates for further field assessment. In field trials, the overall growth and yields were found to be poor compared to the average growth of soybean because of bad weather conditions during the trial periods. Despite these conditions, compared to the control and references, 6 candidate lines from the 131 were selected.
Unfortunately, no candidates were selected from the multi-virus resistance potato plants (600-3-1 and 600-3-2) harboring anti-sense gene constructs of the partial coat protein sequences in PVY, PVA, and PLRV. Preliminary results from transgenic potato infection experiments revealed reasonable resistance to infection with multiple viruses, however, overall growth and yield were poor compared to the control. The total number of tubes according to fresh weight was lower in GM potato lines than in non-GM potato lines. Viral resistance of non-GM and GM potato lines after cultivation in net-houses and open field trials were also determined by visual inspection and ELISA; no virus infected potato plants were observed, regardless of genetic background.
In summary, we analyzed 131 lines from transgenic rice, potato, and soybean to select 8 candidate event lines based on agronomic traits and adaptability to the agricultural environment. in light of these findings, the selected candidates lines will be examined for safety and risk assessment documentation for the petition of these GM cultivarss.
