Purpose & contents
The objective of this program is to create and activate a new paradigm of x-ray imaging technology, functional x-ray imaging, which images and characterizes nanometric, dynamic, and systematic behaviors of internal structure of matter by synchronizing and integrating physical and chemical information through various interactions of broad band x-rays with matter.
The capability to image and characterize internal nanostructure of matter is without any doubt one of the most vital requirements to advance nanotechnology (NT), biotechnology (BT), or the interdisciplinary domains of NT-BT. The central idea in this program is to apply broad band x-rays instead of typical monochromatic x-rays in order to utilize their various interactions with matter (diffraction, refraction, transmission, fluorescence, etc.) simultaneously and systematically for complete understanding of physical and chemical information of nanostructure. This idea is in sharp contrast with other approaches by world-leading groups, where the x-ray imaging contrast is mostly based on using monochromatic x-rays, showing fundamental limitations to a complete achievement of in-situ, 3-dimensional, or real time information in nanometer scales. To overcome the limitations and develop functional x-ray imaging, three major subjects will be carried out; i) the establishment of new imaging principles by synchronizing and integrating physical and chemical information through various interactions between broad band x-rays and matter, ii) the phase contrast enhancement by developing phase contrast agents such as microbubbles, quantum dots, etc, and iii) the application of the new x-ray imaging principles to the development of new nanomaterials and biomedical imaging.
Result
This program, original core technologies of X-ray imaging are successfully germinated. Based on the techniques, we have elucidated unsolved fundamental problems in basic physics and life science fields. Representatively, unknown physics in soft matter are first discovered. Moreover, in biomedical field, in-vivo dynamics and cause of diseases in live organ is successfully ascertained using an innovative and nondestructive high resolution 3D imaging. Furthermore, new technology for integration of various nanodevices in photonics or photoelectronics was developed based on a 3-D direct writing of individual nanowires.
Expected Contribution
This program, if successfully developed, will germinate the original core technologies in both basic and applied sciences such as materials science, physics, chemistry, biology, electronics, chemical engineering, and biomedical engineering by revealing complex nanostructures and phenomena. In particular, the original technologies to be achieved by the functional x-ray imaging will open the ways to the developments of new nano devices for advanced materials or new biomedical devices for both diagnosis and therapy in main vascular or cancerous diseases, which would contribute to a basic technology for national future economic growth
