가. 조사대상자의 일반적 특성
□ 인구사회학적 특성

○교육수준은 전문대학 및 대학교 졸업 이상 44.4%, 고등학교 졸업 34.5%, 초등학교 졸업 이하 11.9%, 중학교 졸업이 9.3% 등으로, 대졸 이상자가 가장 많은 비중을 차지함
○가구 유형에서는 부부와 자녀로 구성된 전형적인 핵가족 가구가 40.2%로 가장 많은 유형을 차지함
□ 경제적 특성
○조사대상자가 취업 중인 경우는 61.5%, 비취업자는 38.5%였으며, 비취업자 중에서는 가사 일을 돌보는 경우가 62.7%로 가장 많았음
○직업은 사무 종사자 26.2%, 서비스 종사자 20.6%, 판매 종사자 13.0%, 기능원 및 관련 기능종사자 11.4%, 농림어업숙련 종사자 8.6% 등으로 분포되었음
○월평균 수입은 300만원 이상 400만원 미만 25.6%, 200만원 이상 300만원 미만 18.8%, 500만원 이상 16.6% 등으로 나타남
나. 성역할 및 폭력관련 행동에 대한 인식과 경험
□ 성역할태도
○전체 조사대상자의 성역할태도 8개 항목에 대한 평균은 2.21점(4점 척도로 점수가 낮을수록 양성평등적임)이었고, 여성 2.11점, 남성은 2.31점으로 나타나 중간 정도의 경향을 보이고 있음. 전반적으로 여성이 남성보다 더 양성평등적인 태도를 나타냄
□ 폭력에 대한 태도
○폭력에 대한 태도(5개 항목)에 대한 평균은 1.73점(4점 척도로 점수가 높을수록 허용적임)인 가운데, 남성은 1.81점, 여성은 1.65점으로 남성이 여성보다 상대적으로 더 높았음. 전반적으로 남성들이 여성들보다 폭력에 대해 더 관용적인 태도를 갖고 있는 것으로 나타남
□ 성장기 학대 및 폭력 목격 경험
○성장기 학대경험에서는 ‘부모로부터 회초리로 손바닥이나 종아리를 맞은 경험이 있다’고 응답한 비율은 전체의 57.6%였음. 성장기 부모간 폭력 목격 경험에서는 ‘부모 간에 욕설 등 심한 말이 오고가는 것을 목격한 경험이 있다’고 응답한 비율이 전체의 40.5%, ‘부모 간에 손으로 때리거나 발로 차는 것을 목격한’ 비율이 전체의 18.5%였으며, ‘물건을 사용하여 상대방을 때리거나 다치게 하는 것을 목격한’ 경우도 전체의 6.3%로 적지 않은 수치로 나타남
□ 부부간 행동에 대한 가정폭력성 인식정도
○부부간 행동에 대한 가정폭력성 인식을 조사한 결과, ‘배우자를 때리려고 위협을 하거나 배우자의 물건을 파손하는 행위’에 대하여 95.1%의 응답자가 ‘가정폭력이다’라고 응답하여 가장 높게 나타남. 그리고 ‘배우자에게 모욕적인 어투로 말을 하거나 욕을 하는 행위’는 86.3%, ‘배우자에게 생활비를 주지 않거나 배우자의 동의 없이 재산을 임의로 처분하는 행위’는 82.6%, ‘배우자에게 원치 않는 성관계를 강요하는 행위’는 82.4%로 각각에 대해 10명 중 8명은 가정폭력으로 인식하는 것으로 나타남. ‘배우자에게 무관심하거나 냉담하게 대하는 행위’에 대한 인식률은 69.7%로 가장 낮게 나타남. 성별로는 남성의 폭력인식률이 여성의 인식률보다 모든 문항에서 낮게 나타남
다. 가정폭력 관련 법 인식과 서비스 욕구
□「가정폭력방지 및 피해자보호 등에 관한 법률」과 「가정폭력범죄의 처벌 등에 관한 특례법」의 인지 정도
○전체 응답자의 81.0%가 인지하고 있었고 19.0%는 전혀 모르는 것으로 나타나 해당법률에 대한 대국민 홍보를 적극적으로 할 필요가 있음을 시사함
□ 가정폭력 관련법 인지경로
○‘TV나 라디오의 공익광고’가 82.7%로 가장 높은 반면 학교나 사회교육기관의 법률 관련 교육을 통해 해당법률을 알게 된 경우는 2.4%의 매우 낮은 수치로 나타나 교육 현장과의 연계를 통한 해당 법률의 홍보 강화가 필요함을 시사함
□ 가정폭력 관련 법률 내용에 대한 인지도
○‘누구든지 가정폭력 범죄를 알게 된 때에는 수사기관에 신고할 수 있다’가 89.2%로 가장 높았음. 뒤를 이어 ‘가정폭력을 신고 받은 경찰은 즉시 현장에 출동하여 수사를 하여야 한다’ 71.8%, ‘가정폭력 범죄를 신고한 사람에 대해서는 비밀이 보장된다’ 70.3%의 순으로 나타났음
○상대적으로 ‘가정폭력으로 신고된다 하더라도 반드시 전과자가 되는 것은 아니다’가 49.8%로 가장 낮은 인지율을 보였으며, 그외 ‘가정폭력으로 배우자를 고소하더라도 자동으로 이혼되는 것은 아니다’ 55.9%, ‘전 배우자 혹은 사실혼 관계에 있는 자가 폭력을 행사하는 경우에도 가정폭력으로 고소할 수 있다’ 62.4%로 인지도가 낮았음
□ 가정폭력을 감소시키기 위해 필요한 정책 우선순위
○가정폭력 감소를 위한 정책(1순위)으로 가장 많은 응답률을 보인 것은 ‘TV 등 공익광고를 통해서 관련 법 및 서비스 홍보’로 33.7%였으며 ‘폭력 허용적 사회문화의 개선(대중매체의 폭력적, 선정적 내용 규제 등)’ 23.5%, ‘가중처벌 등 가해자에 대한 법적 조치 강화’ 18.8%, ‘경찰의 신속한 조기대응 및 수사’ 9.8% 순으로 나타남
□ 가정폭력예방을 위한 효과적인 홍보방법
○가정폭력 예방을 위한 효과적인 홍보방법(1순위)로 조사대상자의 83.0%가 ‘TV나 라디오의 공익광고’라고 응답함
□ 가정폭력 관련 서비스에 대한 인지도
○가정폭력 관련 서비스에 대한 인지도를 조사한 결과, ‘가정폭력 피해자 상담소’에 대하여 알고 있는 경우가 71.7%로 가장 많았고 다음으로는 ‘가정폭력 피해자 보호시설(쉼터), 공동생활가정(그룹홈), 국민임대주택 우선입주’ 44.1%, ‘가정폭력 예방교육(가정폭력관련법 등)’ 42.8%, ‘대한법률구조공단의 무료법률구조 등 가정폭력관련 법률서비스’ 40.2%의 순으로 나타남. 이외에도 ‘여성긴급전화 1366’ 39.4%, ‘직업훈련, 취업지원 등 자립지원’ 36.6%, ‘피해자의 아동취학지원’ 29.9%, ‘의료비 지원 및 의료서비스’ 27.5%, ‘여성폭력원스톱지원센터’ 20.9% 순으로 나타남
□ 가정폭력 신고여부
○본인의 가정에서 발생할 경우 55.0%가 경찰에 신고할 의사를 나타냄. 미신고의 경우 신고하지 않는 이유에 대해 ‘가족이므로’ 57.4%, ‘대화로 해결하기를 원해서’ 23.7% 등으로 나타남. 이는 여전히 가정폭력을 가족 내 사적인 문제로 인식하고 있음을 보여줌
○이웃에서 가정폭력이 발생하였을 때는 전체응답자 중 55.6%가 경찰에 신고할 의사가 있다고 응답하였음. 미신고 이유로는 ‘남의 일이므로’가 55.8%로 가장 많아서, 가정폭력을 가족의 사적인 문제로 여기는 인식을 엿볼 수 있음
라. 자녀폭력
□ 자녀폭력 발생률
○만 18세미만 자녀를 둔 1,380명을 대상으로 조사한 지난 1년간 자녀폭력 발생률은 응답자가 자녀에게 행한 경우가 46.1%, 응답자의 배우자가 자녀에게 행한 경우가 31.3%로 나타남
□ 자녀폭력 유형
○자녀폭력 유형별로 살펴볼 때, 전체 응답자가 자녀에게 행한 폭력 중 정서적 폭력이 42.8%로 가장 많았고, 신체적 폭력(경한+중한)은 18.3%, 방임은 5.0%였음. 배우자가 자녀에게 행한 폭력도 역시 정서적 폭력이 28.8%로 가장 많았고 신체적 폭력(경한+중한) 10.1%, 방임 3.8%였음
마. 부부폭력
□ 부부폭력 발생률
○지난 1년간 만 19세 이상 65세 미만 기혼남녀의 부부폭력률(통제 제외)은 45.5%였음. 2013년 조사결과는 2007년보다는 5.2%p 증가하였고 2010년보다는 8.3%p 감소하였음
□ 여성이 응답한 지난 1년간 부부폭력 발생률
○만 19세 이상 여성응답자가 배우자로부터 정서적 폭력을 경험하였다고 응답한 경우는 28.6%였고, 신체적 폭력(경한+중한)은 4.9%, 방임은 17.8%, 통제는 36.5%, 경제적 폭력은 3.5%였음
○부부폭력이 처음 시작된 시기는 결혼 후 5년 미만인 경우가 62.1%였음. 특히 결혼 후 1년 미만이라고 응답한 경우가 22.2%로 나타나 결혼 초기부터 부부폭력에 대한 대응이 중요함을 말해주고 있음. 여성응답자가 배우자에게 처음 폭력을 시작한 시기에서도 결혼 후 5년 미만이 55.8%에 달하였음
□ 남성이 응답한 지난 1년간 부부폭력 발생률
○만 19세 이상 남성응답자가 배우자로부터 경하거나 중한 신체적 폭력을 당한 경우는 2.8%, 정서적 폭력은 26.7%, 방임은 18.0%, 통제는 37.6%였음
○남성응답자가 배우자로부터 처음 폭력을 당한 시기는 결혼 후 5년 미만이 61.0%, 결혼 후 5년 이후는 37.4%로 결혼 후 5년 미만이 절반 이상임. 배우자에게 처음으로 폭력을 행사한 시기 역시 결혼 후 5년 미만이 61.1%로 결혼 후 5년 이후라고 응답한 35.9%보다 높게 나타남
□ 부부폭력 피해영향
○만 19세 이상 여성응답자 중 배우자로부터 결혼기간 동안 신체적 폭력, 정서적 폭력, 경제적 폭력, 성학대, 방임, 통제 중 하나라도 피해를 경험한 경우는 총 493명이며, 이중 신체적 피해가 수반된 경우는 8.2%로 나타남. 한편, 배우자로부터 폭력을 경험한 만 19세 이상 남성응답자는 420명으로 이중 3.9%가 신체적 피해를 경험한 것으로 나타남
○부부폭력 피해에 따른 신체적 부상 정도에 있어서 여성의 경우 약간의 상처(부상)가 80.2%로 가장 많았고, 심각한 상처(부상)는 19.8%였음. 남성의 경우도 약간의 상처(부상)가 94.0%로 가장 많았고 심각한 상처(부상)는 6.0%로 나타남
○배우자로부터 폭력을 당한 여성의 20.1%는 정신적 고통을 경험한 것으로 나타남. 여성이 경험하는 정신적 고통의 증상은 ‘자신에 대한 실망, 무력감, 자아상실’ 65.1%, ‘가해자에 대한 적대감이나 분노 감정’ 43.6%, ‘매사에 불안하고 우울한 감정’ 38.5%, ‘폭력 당시의 생각이 지속되는 경험’ 23.6%의 순으로 나타남. 남성도 여성과 마찬가지로 ‘자신에 대한 실망, 무력감, 자아상실’ 78.7%, ‘가해자에 대한 적대감이나 분노’ 27.4%, ‘매사에 불안, 우울’ 16.6% 순으로 나타남
○부부폭력을 당한 여성들의 정신적 증상에 대한 의료처치 경험은 9.2%로 낮은 편이었고 남성들도 1.8%에 불과함
□ 부부폭력 이후 생활의 변화
○부부폭력 피해를 경험한 응답자 중 여성의 20.4%와 남성의 16.4%가 배우자와 관계가 나빠졌다고 응답함. 미미하지만 여성의 경우 배우자와 이혼 0.7%, 배우자와 별거 0.3%, 남성의 경우 배우자와 이혼 0.8%, 배우자와 별거 0.5% 등의 변화도 일어나고 있음
□ 폭력행동에 대한 대응
○폭력행동이 일어난 당시에 어떻게 대응했는지에 대해 여성은 66.4%, 남성은 69.9%가 ‘그냥 있었다’고 응답함. 뒤를 이어 여성과 남성 모두 ‘자리를 피하거나 집 밖으로 도망’(여성 17.5%, 남성 15.9%), ‘함께 폭력을 행사’(여성 13.1%, 남성 12.4%) 순으로 나타났음. ‘주위에 도움 요청’ 경우는 모두 현저히 낮았음(여성 1.0%, 남성 0.5%)
○여성들을 대상으로 그냥 있었다고 한 이유를 조사한 결과, ‘그 순간만 넘기면 되기 때문’이라고 응답한 경우가 40.5%로 가장 많았고, 그 다음으로 ‘가족이기 때문에’ 32.8%, ‘창피하고 자존심 상해서’ 19.5%의 순으로 나타났음. 남성의 경우는 여성과 달리 ‘가족이기 때문’이라고 응답한 경우가 38.0%로 가장 높았음. 전반적으로 가족관계에 있다는 이유로, 그 순간만 넘기면 된다고 생각하는 경향이 강하게 나타남
□ 폭력행동에 대해 도움을 요청한 대상
○폭력 발생 당시 혹은 발생 이후에 폭력 피해에 대해 도움을 요청한 경험이 있는지 조사한 결과, 여성은 97.6%가, 남성은 98.9%가 부부폭력 피해에 대해 도움을 요청한 경험이 없다고 응답함
○도움을 요청한 대상에서 여성의 경우 ‘가족과 친척’이 4.4%, ‘이웃이나 친구’가 3.6%였는데 공식적 지원체계인 경찰에의 신고, 여성긴급전화 1366 이용, 쉼터 및 가정폭력 상담소 이용은 저조하였음. 남성의 경우 ‘이웃이나 친구’가 2.4%, ‘가족이나 친척’이 2.2%였으며 공식적 지원체계 관련 서비스 이용은 거의 전무한 것으로 나타남
○경찰신고 경험이 있다고 응답한 비율은 여성 2.1%, 남성 0.3%였음. 여성이 경찰에 신고하지 않은 이유에서는 ‘배우자의 폭력이 심각하지 않다고 생각해서’라고 응답한 경우가 59.7%로 가장 많았고, ‘집안 일이 알려지는 것이 창피해서’ 18.5%, ‘배우자를 차마 신고할 수 없어서’ 9.3% 순으로 나타남. 남성도 ‘배우자의 폭력이 심각하지 않다고 생각해서’라고 응답한 경우가 63.4%로 여성과 마찬가지로 제일 높았고 ‘집안 일이 알려지는 것이 창피해서’ 16.8%였음. 이처럼 여성과 남성 모두가 폭력에 대해 심각하지 않다고 인식하고, 사적인 일로 여기며, 배우자라는 점을 감안하여 신고하지 못하고 있는 것으로 보임
○여성긴급전화 1366에 도움을 요청한 경우는 여성 0.4%, 남성 0.3%에 불과하였고, 가정폭력 상담소나 쉼터에 도움을 요청한 경우는 거의 전무하였음. 여성이 여성긴급전화 1366 또는 가정폭력상담소 및 보호시설, 쉼터와 같은 관련기관에 도움을 요청하지 않은 이유를 보면, ‘배우자의 폭력이 심각하지 않다고 생각해서’가 33.0%로 가장 높은 비율로 나타났고, ‘부부간에 알아서 해결할 일인 것 같아서’ 25.6%, ‘그 순간만 넘기면 되어서’ 12.9%, ‘도움이 될 것 같지 않아서’ 12.4%, ‘주변에 알려지는 것이 창피해서’ 10.3% 순으로 나타남. 이는 폭력대응에서 그냥 있었던 이유와 맥락을 같이 하고 있는 것으로 보임. 남성이 피해자인 경우도 여성과 유사하였음
바. 가족원폭력
□ 가족원폭력 발생률
○지난 1년간 배우자를 제외한 부모, 형제자매 등으로부터 폭력 피해를 경험한 비율은 7.0%로 나타났고, 본인이 가해한 폭력은 9.8%, 상호폭력은 4.7%로 본인이 가해한 폭력비율이 상호폭력의 2배 이상에 달하는 것으로 나타남. 폭력유형별로는 정서적 폭력이 대부분으로, 가족원으로부터의 피해에서는 6.9%, 응답자가 가족원에 대한 가해에서는 9.5%, 상호폭력에서는 4.5%였음
○여성 응답의 경우, 가족원으로부터의 폭력피해율은 6.9%이며 대부분이 정서적 폭력(6.8%)으로 나타남. 가족원에 대해 폭력을 가한 비율은 8.0%였고, 정서적 폭력이 7.9%였음. 상호폭력은 4.1%였고 정서적 폭력이 3.9%를 차지하였음. 남성 응답의 경우, 가족원으로부터의 폭력피해율은 7.1%이며 정서적 폭력(7.0%)이 주를 이루었음. 가족원에 대해 가해한 비율은 11.6%로 정서적 폭력(11.0%) 중심이었으며 상호폭력률은 5.3%로 역시 정서적 폭력(5.1%)이 대부분임
□ 가족원폭력의 가해자
○지난 1년 동안 경험한 가족원폭력의 가해자를 살펴본 결과, 신체적 폭력의 경우, 형제자매에 의한 비율이 53.3%로 가장 많았고, 어머니 22.8%, 아버지 22.2%순으로 나타남. 정서적 폭력의 경우 역시 형제자매에 의한 비율이 52.5%였고 어머니 23.6%, 아버지 19.4%순이었음
○여성 응답의 경우, 신체적 폭력의 가해자는 형제자매 48.9%, 어머니 29.4%, 아버지 18.1%순임. 정서적 폭력에서도 형제자매가 54.7%로 가장 많았고, 어머니 19.0%, 아버지 12.1%순으로 나타남. 남성 응답의 경우, 가족원폭력의 가해자를 살펴본 결과, 신체적 폭력에서는 형제자매가 57.7%로 가장 높은 비율을 보였고, 아버지 26.2%, 어머니 16.2% 순이었음. 정서적 폭력에서도 형제자매가 가해자인 경우가 50.3%로 가장 높았으며, 어머니 28.2%, 아버지 26.5%순으로 조사됨
□ 가족원폭력의 피해자
○지난 1년 동안 응답자가 가해한 가족원폭력의 피해자를 살펴본 결과, 신체적 폭력의 경우 형제자매가 71.1%로 가장 많았고, 그 다음은 어머니로 14.4%임. 정서적 폭력에서는 형제자매 56.0%, 어머니 28.8%, 아버지 15.4%로 나타남
○여성 응답자가 가해한 폭력의 피해자는, 신체적 폭력의 경우, 형제자매가 60.3%로 가장 높게 나타났으며, 그 다음으로 기타 가족원 32.6%, 어머니 7.1% 순임. 정서적 폭력의 피해자를 살펴보면, 형제자매가 56.2%로 절반을 상회하였고, 어머니 24.5%, 아버지 13.0% 순으로 나타남. 남성 응답자가 가해한 신체적 폭력의 피해자는 형제자매가 77.6%로 가장 높은 비율을 보였고, 어머니 18.9%, 아버지 9.3% 순으로 나타남. 정서적 폭력의 피해자 분석결과, 형제자매가 55.8%로 절반을 넘는 비율로 가장 높았으며, 어머니 31.9%, 아버지 17.1% 순으로 조사됨
□ 가족원폭력에 대한 대응
○가족원으로부터의 폭력에 대한 대응에서 ‘그냥 있었다’의 경우가 60.3%로 가장 높았고 ‘자리를 피하거나 집 밖으로 도망하는’ 경우가 18.9%, ‘함께 폭력을 행사하는’ 경우가 17.4%였음. 여성은 ‘그냥 있었다’ 57.2%, ‘자리를 비우거나 집밖으로 도망’ 21.1%였고, 남성은 ‘그냥 있었다’ 63.3%, ‘자리를 피하거나 집밖으로 도망’ 16.8% 순임
○그냥 당하고 있었다고 한 이유로는 ‘가족이기 때문에’ 51.1%, ‘그 순간만 넘기면 되어서’ 24.2% 순으로 나타남. 여성은 ‘가족이기 때문에’ 45.1%, ‘그 순간만 넘기면 되어서’ 26.4%, 남성은 ‘가족이기 때문에’ 56.4%, ‘그 순간만 넘기면 되어서’ 22.3% 순임
□ 가족원폭력에 대한 도움요청
○가족원폭력 행동에 대해 당시 혹은 그 이후에라도 주위에 도움을 요청한 경우는 전체 응답자의 8.0%였으며, 여성은 12.1%, 남성은 4.0%에 불과하였음. 도움을 요청하는 대상도 여성은 ‘가족이나 친척’ 10.3%, ‘이웃이나 친’구 2.7% 순이었고, ‘여성긴급전화 1366’과 ‘쉼터 및 가정폭력상담소’는 전무한 것으로 나타남. 남성은 ‘가족이나 친척’ 2.2%, ‘이웃과 친구’ 2.2%였고 ‘여성긴급전화 1366’과 ‘쉼터 및 가정폭력상담소’는 전무했음
○경찰도움 요청 경험이 있다고 응답한 비율은 1.0%였음. 경찰서에 도움을 요청하지 않은 이유로는 여성의 경우 ‘폭력이 심하지 않다고 생각해서’ 50.3%, ‘집안 일이 알려지는 것이 창피해서’ 24.3% 순이었으며, 남성의 경우도 각각 53.3%, 24.1%로 나타남

- The majority of respondents (61.1%) are married or living with a partner, whereas 26.2% have never been married; 27.6% of those have a child (or children) aged under 18.
- As for a detailed marital history, approximately 35% last their marriage over 31 years, 13.4% for 21-25 years, 11.4% for 26-30 years, and 11% for 11-15 years, respectively.

● Awareness and experience of violence
- As for attitudes towards violence, the average score of five items was 1.73 in a four-point scale ranging from ‘strongly disagree’ to ‘strongly agree’ (1=strongly disagree, 2=disagree, 3=agree, 4=strongly agree); the higher score is, the more tolerant towards violence one is; males scored 1.81, which is higher than females with 1.65; it demonstrates that males are more likely to be tolerant towards violence than their female counterparts.

- Asked about willingness to record domestic violence to the police, more than half of females (60.7%) and 49.3% of males answered that they were willing to do. ● Child abuse
- The survey shows that 46.1% of 1,380 respondents having a child (or children) aged under 18 have committed violence against their child (or children) in the past 12 months; 31.3% of those reported that their spouse has abused their child (or children).
- In terms of forms of child abuse, the majority of respondents (42.8%) have psychologically or emotionally abused their child (or children); 18.3% of those have committed physical abuse either seriously or casually; 5% reported child neglect. Similarly, 28.8% reported psychological or emotional abuse of their spouse towards their child (or children), followed by physical abuse for 10.1% and child neglect for 3.8%.
● Spousal abuse
- 45.5% of married men and women aged between 19 and 64have experienced a victim of spousal abuse in the past 12 months, increasing 5.2%p compared to 2007 but decreasing compared to 2010.
- Among female respondents, 28.6% have experienced spousal emotional abuse including verbal abuse, threatening physical harm and destruction of property; 4.9 reported physical abuse either seriously and casually; 17.8% have been neglected by their spouse; 36.5% have been forced isolation from any social relationships or been assaulted unfairly for suspected love affairs; 3.5% have experienced economic or financial abuse.
- As to when they were first abused by their spouse, 62.1% said that it was less than five years since getting married, and 22.2% less than one year; this indicates that it is important to response to spousal abuse at the beginning stage of marital life. Even in terms of when they first abused their spouse, more than half of those (55.8%) reported that it was less than five years.
- Among male respondents, only 2.8% have experienced physical abuse either seriously and causally; 26.7% said that they have been psychologically or emotionally abused, such as verbal abuse, threatening physical harm and destruction of property; 18% have experienced spousal neglect, whereas 37.6% reported to be forced isolation from any social relationships or to be assaulted unfairly for suspected love affairs.

- Among 493 female respondents who have experienced any forms of spousal abuse in their marital life, 8.2% were left with physical injuries. 20.1% of those have suffered from mental distress, including ‘being disappointed in myself and feeling a sense of powerlessness or loss of self-worth’ for 65.1%, ‘feeling animosity and anger toward a perpetrator’ for 43.6%, ‘feeling anxiety and becoming depressed in everything’ for 38.5%, and ‘keeping reminding of memories of a victimization’ for 23.6%.

For the reason for not taking action, the largest response of females (40.5%) was ‘because they thought that they had only to escape from that moment’; 32.8% of those said ‘because they still thought of their spouse as their family though’, and 19.5% responded ‘because they were ashamed of themselves’. For the males, the largest response was ‘because they still thought of their spouse as their family’ at 38%. Generally, the respondents tend to think that it would be fine to escape from that moment.
- Of those who have sought help from others, most of them have asked for help to their family or relatives, and neighbours or friends. Among females, 4.4% have asked for help to their family or relatives, with 3.6% to their neighbours or friends. On the contrary, they have made little use of support services including Women’s Hotline 1366, shelters and counselling centres for victims. Similarly, males have rarely used those services of the official institutions, while some have sought help from their family or relatives (2.4%), and neighbours or friends (2.2%).

Regarding the reasons for not calling for help to those institutions, females said ‘because they thought the spousal abuse was not very serious’ (33%), ‘because the incident seemed to be solved between husband and wife by themselves’ (25.6%), ‘because they thought that they had only to escape from that moment’ (12.9%), ‘because they did not think institutions could do much to help’ (12.4%), and ‘because they worried that the matter of family would become known to everyone’ (10.3%). ● Abuse of household members
- 7% of respondents have been a victim of any domestic violence by parents or siblings, besides by spouse.
- Asked who has abused other household members in the past 12 months, for physical abuse, the greatest proportion (53.3%) reported siblings, followed by mother (22.8%), and father (22.2%). Similarly, for psychological or emotional abuse, over half of respondents (52.5%) answered siblings, followed by mother (23.6%), and father (19.4%).
- Asked about the experience of being a perpetrator of household members abuse, the largest number of respondents (71.1%) have abused physically their siblings, while 14.4% of those reported abusing their mother. In the case of psychological or emotional abuse, 56% have abused their siblings, 28.8% of their mother, and 15.4% of their father.
- Asked about responses to domestic violence by their household members, 60.3% of the respondents experiencing the abuse ‘did not take any action’; because ‘they still thought of their spouse as their family’ (51.4%) and ‘they thought that they had only to escape from that moment’ (24.2%). However, 18.9% of those ‘left the situation or ran out of the house’, with 17.4% who ‘fought back’.

- Almost half of perpetrators (47.1%) were victim’s son; especially for female respondents, it was considerable to be abused by daughter-in-law (23.5%) and daughter (16.2%) as well as by son (43.6%). Similarly, for males, more than half of those (51.9%) have experienced abuse by their son.
- Asked about cohabitation with their perpetrators, 37.7% of females and 32.9% of males were living together with the perpetrators. As for the reason of the abuse, females said ‘a lack of mutual understanding’ (30.1%), ‘no specific reason’ (17.3%), and ‘differences in personality with’ (15.5%); comparing to females, larger number of males answered ‘a lack of mutual understanding’ (49.9%); they also said ‘no specific reason’ (17%) and ‘financial problems’ (12.6%).
