The purpose of this study is to gather information of petroleum resources and to analyse petroleum potential of 1) shale resource in Asian countries, 2) East African petroliferous sedimentary basins, and 3) Yellow Sea sedimentary basins including North Korea. The information and data, gathered from this study, was added to the previously developed PetroDB system and will be distributed to the Korean public and private companies who are investing overseas petroleum industry.
To acquire shale resource information of Asian countries, KIGAM successfully launched “CCOP–KIGAM Unconventional Oil and Gas Project”. Through six times of international workshop, fourteen CCOP membership countries presented recent activities of shale gas research in their countries, possible sedimentary basins with shale resources potential, and types and contents of organic material and maturation. CCOP membership countries submitted their map of the potential shale gas/oil basins and these maps were integrated, using QGIS software. Shale samples collected from the Asian countries were also analyzed to evaluate the shale gas/oil potential of the Asian sedimentary basins. Screening all of the potential sedimentary basins in Asian countries, we selected Central Sumatra, South Sumatra and Bintuni basins of Indonesia, Sabah and Sarawak basins of Malaysia and Phitsanulok Basin of Thailand as priority research targets, because these basins have higher shale resource potential than that of other basins. Preliminary study on tectonic history, stratigraphy, sedimentary history and petroleum potential of these basins were also carried out for further detailed research. During the workshop, CCOP membership countries also speculated various techniques for assessment of shale gas resources including USGS and EIA/ARI methods under the support of USGS and BGS specialists. Through the “CCOP-KIGAM Unconventional Oil and Gas Project”, KIGAM will help Asian countries, analysing their shale samples and mapping their shale resources. The support program will help acquiring recent and accurate informations of shale gas resources in Asian countries and, finally, will help Korean public and private companies who want to invest Asian shale resources.
Although recent giant gas discovery in deep water Ruvuma Basin attracted many attention to international oil companies, the basin can be classified into frontier basin with few exploration and exploitation. Tectonic history, stratigraphy, sedimentation history and petroleum potential of the Ruvuma Basin were carefully speculated. The basin was formed by rifting of Gondwana supercontinent from Permian to Early Jurassic, depositing thick nonmarine to marine sediments of Karoo Supergroup. Drift of Madagascar during the Middle Jurassic resulted in the deposition of marine sediments. After the Cretaceous, most of the basin were filled with marine to deep marine sediments in the eastern part, whereas the western part is dominated by fluvial environments. Source rock includes Karoo Group lacustrine shale and Jurassic to Paleocene marine shale. Clastic rocks of Karoo Group and Jurassic to Eocene as well as carbonate rocks of Jurassic and Cretaceous can act as reservoir rocks. Petroleum system analysis revealed that oil and gas were generated from the Karoo Supergroup and Lower Jurassic source rocks since the Middle Jurassic (180 Ma) and begin to migrate upward and up-dip direction. However, poor development of seal rocks resulted in the seepage of these oil and gas, until Early Cretaceous (100 Ma). The oil and gas formed after the Cretaceous still remained in deep Jurassic and Cretaceous sequence. Local development of growth faults and toe thrust may be responsible for the accumulation of gas in the Tertiary reservoir rocks.
Regional tectonic history and petroleum potential of Yellow Sea sedimentary basins were speculated based on integrated stratigraphy of the Bohai Bay Basin and West Korean Bay Basin. Gathering all possible data on West Korean Bay Basin of the North Korea, petroleum system analysis was carried out. The study revealed high sedimentation rate during the Late Jurassic, uplift and erosion, low sedimentation rate during the Early Cretaceous, second uplift and erosion during the Late Cretaceous and thick sedimentation of clastic rocks during the Tertiary.
Although the Jurassic source rock reached oil generation stage, sufficient oil and gas was not expelled in the upper part of the Late Jurassic source rocks. Thus, the deep seated, thick Jurassic sequences are supposed to be the major source rocks. The Bohai Bay Basin is a intracontinental rift basin, filled with Precambrian, Paleozoic, Mesozoic and Tertiary sedimentary rocks. Main source rocks include Eocene to Oligocene Shehejie Formation, deposited in deep anoxic lacustrine environment. Shallow lacustrine Kongdian Formation (Paleocene to Eocene) and deep lacustrine shale of Dongying Formation (Oligocene) also acted as important source rocks. Critical moment of the oil generation varies from middle Miocene (15 Ma) in Jiyang and Dongying subbasins to early Oligocene (30 Ma) in Bozhong Subbasin. Migration of oil occurred through unconformity and inclined faults, and accumulated in structural traps such as roll-over anticline, drape anticline, nose of anticline and tilted fault blocks.
Recent changes in information environment envisage to improve the previously developed PetroDB system, enhancing usability and management. For the renewal of the information system, open-source GIS web server was replaced and web page of PetroDB was re-implemented for cross-browsing. Convenience functions were also developed for the diverse web internet application. All of the data and information gathered through this project have been uploaded and renewed to distribute the information to the Korean public and private companies who are investing overseas petroleum industry.
