Recently, many researchers have focused on novel methods of manufacturing flexible, low-cost electronic components and devices, as well as printed electronics such as radio frequency identification (RFID) tags, sensors, flexible displays, solar cells, E-papers, and so on.
The R2R process of manufacturing printed electronics using printing technology is attracting attention because its process cost is lower than that of the conventional semiconductor process. This technology, which offers both a lower cost and higher productivity, can be applied in the production of organic TFT(thin film transistor), solar cell, RFID(radio frequency identification) tag, printed battery, E-paper, touch screen panel, black matrix for LCD(liquid crystal display), flexible display, and so forth. In general, in order to implement printed electronics, narrow width and gap printing, registration of multi-layer printing by several printing units, and printing accuracy of under 20 ㎛ are all required.
These electronic products require high precision to the degree of tens of microns - in a large area with flexible material, and mass productivity at low cost. As such, the roll-to-roll printing process is attracting attention as a mass production system for these printed electronic devices. For the commercialization of this process, two basic electronic ink technologies, such as conductive ink and polymers, and printing equipment have to be developed.
The roll-to-roll printing equipments comprises three components of the main body, monitoring part, and control part, which are linked together for operation. Since the printing unit makes use of the additional method of printing, unlike the silicon semiconductor process, the system can be so configured as to enable the in-line continuous process of the electronic device[1-5]. The basic platform is configured with a feeding unit, printing unit, coating unit, and re-winder, and it was designed in such a way as to make it possible to add other functions easily as and when necessary. Therefore, it has the flexibility of process scalability. The drive chains of all the units are designed for precise driving and control with precision servo motor. The feeding process of the roll to be printed was determined and the structure of the un-winder unit was designed accordingly. The un-winder comprised a frame, feed shaft roller and servo motor, and its structure was designed to be able to be installed on the righthand side of the bed frame[6]. For printing, the roll was mounted on the feeder shaft. The unwinding of the roll, which is passively driven, requires tensile force for the rotation of the feeder roller, and the tensile force was controlled with an infeeder and dancer. A load cell was installed to measure the tensile force precisely.
The film from the un-winder has to be fed into the printing unit in the correct position. To this end, an EPC(edge position controller) was installed to enable the direction of the film feed to be fixed in the correct position, i.e. vertically in the shaft direction.
