□ Purpose&contents
Petrochemical processes accompany energy loss and coke formation problems arisen by high operating temperature and pressure. Therefore, rationale development of novel catalytic system for energy efficiency, as an alternative to these process, is strongly required and is essential for further improvement of economical competitiveness of a nation. Here, we target a design and realization of nanostructured heterogeneous catalytic system, which is engineered at atomic scale based on theoretical approach “ab initio method“. In addition, catalytic reaction assisted by light and electricity will be proposed to improve an energy efficiency in catalytic system. Here, target catalytic reactions are hydrotreating of heavy oil, oxidative coupling of shale gas, and direct conversion of woodchip (hydrolysis and hydrogenation).
□ Result
A rate determining step and the activation energy for the heterogeneous catalysis were confirmed based on critical analysis of reaction mechanism and the kinetic studies. Using the calculation process based on quantum mechanics, we found that electronic state of the catalyst can strongly influence a catalytic performance and determined the adsorption energy and a level of activation of reactants, which led to the better understanding of reaction mechanism in atomic level. A novel catalytic system was realized and developed based on this theoretical approach. The realized catalyst showed high catalytic activity/selectivity/stability for a target reaction. Additional analyses was carried out for further improvement of developed catalytic system based on a comparison of theoretical and experimental results.
A catalytic reaction assisted by light and electricity will be proposed to improve an energy efficiency in catalytic system. Excess energy consumption and energy loss should be accompanied in conventional catalytic reaction system because the heat supplier is normally located on the exterior surface of the reactor. The novel catalytic system developed herein, can supply required energy to the catalyst bed selectively and efficiently, which can lead to the minimization of energy loss. The results of the research obtained in past 3 years, we published 10 SCI papers in prominent journals and registered 2 patents.
Finally, we suggest a new paradigm in designing and optimizing the nanostructured heterogeneous catalytic systems. Moreover, we suggested and developed a new concept of energy-efficient catalytic system, which could be garnering attention due to its efficacy in aiding both economical and practical mismatching for commercialization.
□ Expected Contribution
Designing tailored catalytic system based on theoretical calculation can save time and efforts of conventional developing method (i.e., time consuming and trial/error method). In particular, allowing analysis of catalytic activity in atomic scale can provide rational reaction mechanism at given catalytic system. Mostly, noble-metal based catalytic systems are used for key reactions in petrochemical processes. Such ab initio approach can analyze and investigate the main parameters how the noble metals exhibit high catalytic performance toward the target reactions. Based on the information, non-noble metal based catalytic system can be developed and optimized to exhibit comparable catalytic behaviors.
Our new energy-saving catalytic system can be applied to most of gaseous catalytic systems. In particular, the effect of using this system can much more be pronounced, which is operational at high temperature. Based on the results obtained at this primary research, non-noble metal and low temperature based reactor systems will further be developed.
