Management of marine plastic debris including microplastics and regulation on use of microbeads in USA, EU, Japan and international organization was reviewed and summarized.
Analytical methods for microplastics in bivalves were established for monitoring study. Four bivalve species (oyster, mussel, manila clam and scallop) were selected and purchased from three large scale seafood markets in Seoul, Gwangju and Busan. All the microplastic particles in the bivalve samples were identified and confirmed by micro-Fourier Transform Infrared (μFTIR) spectroscopy. Microplastic concentrations were 0.07±0.06 microplastic(MP)/g wet weight (hereafter MP/g) for oyster, 0.12±0.10 MP/g for mussel, 0.34±0.31 MP/g for manila clam, and 0.08±0.08 MP/g for scallop. The manila clam showed significantly (p<0.05) higher value than the other three bivalves. Regarding region of sampling, oyster was significantly high in Busan than Seoul, and clam showed significantly higher value in Gwangju than two other regions.
Polyethylene, polystyrene, polypropylene, and polyester were dominant polymer types. Fragment shape accounted for over 70% in composition, and microplastic of 100-200 ㎛ in size showed peak in oyster, mussel and clam, while 200-300 ㎛ size was peaked for scallop. Microplastic levels in Korean market was relatively lower than the cultured or marketed bivalves reported in the world. The estimated total annual uptake of microplastics through consumption of contaminated four bivalve species in Korean market was 212 MP/person·yr. The Food and Agriculture Organization of UN (FAO) estimated 900 MP/person·yr by consumption of a portion of mussels in the worst case scenario. This value was 31 times higher than Korean annual consumption of microplastic through mussels (29 MP/person·yr). Effects of microplastics on human health was discussed, and food safety management for microplastics was recommended. In addition, with lacking of human health effects of microplastics in the world, their research plan was suggested.
