3. Results
3.1. Future Climate Change
< Figure 3-1 > and < Figure 3-2 > show the ranges of future climate change from the year 2041 through 2050 in the Korean peninsula with the IPCC's climate change scenarios and RAMS regional climate model results of Japan National Institute of Environmental Studies. RAMS regional climate model generates a higher variability of climate change than those GCM simulation results under SRES scenarios. The highest climate change variability was simulated during the winter seasons. Therefore, a comparative review with the studies conducted by other institutions is recommended.
The temperature variability simulated with RCM was projected that the temperature rise in summer will be approximately 0.5℃ higher than winter in South Korea. The temperature variability in winter simulated with the RCM was found within a range of winter mean temperature fluxes (1~3℃) predicted by GCMs; however, the summer temperature variability was predicted to rise about 4℃, which exceeds the the temperature fluxes (1~3.5℃) of GCMs. The simulated mean temperature fluxes under B1 scenario turned out to be smaller than that under other scenarios.
With the RAMS regional climate model, the precipitation variability in South Korea was predicted to increase more than 60% in winter while approximately a 10% increase was predicted in summer. The summer precipitation fluxes predicted by the RCM fall within the mean precipitation flux range of the SRES scenarios (-10~55%); however, the winder precipitation fluxes turned out to be approximately 60% which exceeds the mean precipitation flux range of the SRES scenarios (-20~20%).
The temperature variability simulated with RCM was projected that the temperature rise in summer will be approximately 1.5℃ higher than winter in North Korea while the SRES scenarios predict a higher mean temperature rise in winter. The winter mean temperature variability predicted by the RCM was approximately 2.7℃ which falls within the winter temperature flux range of the SRES scenarios (1~5.3℃). However, the summer mean temperature variability with the RCM turned out to be 4.3℃, which exceeds the summer temperature flux range of the SRES scenarios (1~3.2℃).
A noticeable increase of precipitation in North Korea was predicted by the RCM. A 30% increase of the precipitation in summer in North Korea was predicted and a 55% precipitation increase in winter. The summer precipitation variability predicted by the SRES scenarios was found within a range of -10~40%, and the winter variability was in a range of -20~20%. Therefore, to define such difference in seasonal precipitation variabilities, a further comparative review of various studies on model simulation with RCMs is recommended.
< Table 3-1 > analyzes and summarizes the future climate change on the Korean peninsula with regional and seasonal classifications. The most stable development scenario in the Korean peninsula turned out to be the B1 scenario, which indicated the significant positive synergies between the development of environmentallysound technologies, sustainable global society, and climate change.
3.2 Future Runoff Change
The future runoff change was analyzed by employing SWBM on the area between latitude 33°~44° 30' and longitude 123° 30'~131° 30'. To validate and predict the runoff change of present years (1981~1990) and that of future years (2041~2050), 10 major watershed basins in both North Korea and South Korea were analyzed. The future climate was simulated and analyzed employing 4 IPCC/SRES scenarios, 10 GCM results, and RAMS regional climate model of Japan National Institute for Environmental Studies.
< Figure 3-3 > shows the runoff of present years and the simulated runoff change in the future years. In < Figure 3-3 >, (a) shows the 10-year mean runoff of present years, and (b) shows the simulated future runoff generated by NIES/RAMS regional climate model indicating the 607mm of the mean runoff in South Korea and 530mm in North Korea; however, a significant runoff increase in Pyeongan and Hwanghae provinces in North Korea was predicted. (c) shows the runoff changes between the present years and future, which predicts that a noticeable runoff increase in the central to northern regions of North Korea and a decline of runoff around the Hamkyungbuk-do province including the Tumen river basin area.
In southern regions, the changes in runoff was predicted to be marginal; however, some decline on runoff was predicted in the southern coastal regions and inland areas in Jeolla provinces. (d) shows the geographical locations of 10 major watershed basins chosen in this study. The predicted runoff changes by each climate change scenario are illustrated and summarized in < Table 5-16 > respectively.
< Table 3-2 > shows the results of the simulation to predict the runoff and precipitation changes caused by climate change in major watershed basins. In South Korea, the B1 scenario was predicted to bring the least magnitude of impact on the runoff and precipitation (-5.4%) while the A1 scenario was predicted to bring the most severe impact(16.3%). In North Korea, the B1 scenario turned out to associate the least magnitude of impact (0.6%); however, RAMS regional climate model projected a notable 41.9% variability on runoff.
< Table 3-3 > shows the projected runoff changes of 10 major watershed basins in the Korean peninsula. The B1 scenario turned out to associate the least magnitude of impact while RAMS regional climate model predicts a heavy increase of runoff in the Aplock, Chungcheon, Daedong, and Yesung River basins in North Korea, and Han and Geum River basins in South Korea.
The runoff change predictions of major watershed basins in the Korean peninsula simulated by the IPCC/SRES climate change scenarios show that the B1 scenario will create the least impact on the runoff while the A1 scenario will bring the most adverse impact on the runoff in the Korean peninsula refer to < Table 5-16 >.
In South Korea, an increase of the yearly runoff and runoff in the rainy season was predicted under all scenarios except the B1 scenario. In particular, the A1 scenario was predicted to lead to serious adverse impacts including floods in the Han River and Geum River basins due to the fact that a noticeable increase of runoff during the rainy season was predicted.
In North Korea, the B1 scenario resulted the least runoff change. A decline in the runoff in Tuman River was also predicted. However, more severe impacts on runoff was predicted in North Korea. The simulation with the RCM predicted a runoff increase higher than 50% at all watershed basins except the Tuman River basin.
