Since 1950s, global production of plastic has been increasing, reaching 335 million tons of production in 2016. Among these plastics, beside the amount of plastic which was landfilled, recycled and reused, a significant part of plastic enters into an environment, where it accumulates. This plastic would be fragmented in the environment through photodegration and biodegradation and become a small size of particle which would be less than 5 mm. In addition, plastic which is used for specific purpose is intentionally fragmented with less than 5 mm sized particle. When plastic is broken down and becomes less than 5 mm sized particle intentionally or naturally, it is called microplastic.
We investigated the distribution of microplastic in Han river and its tributaries. We also monitored the microplastic in fish inhabiting in Han river with 6 species. We found that the concentration of microplastic on the surface (0m) of Han river was 0~20 particle/m3 (6.5±5.9 particle/m3).
Meanwhile, the concentration of microplastic at 2 m below the surface (2m)of Han river was 1~9 particle/m3 (5.1±2.4 particle/m3). The concentration intributaries of Han river ranged 10∼104 particle/m3 (47.4±26.3 particle/m3).
The abundant type of plastic in Han river was polyethylene, silicone, polystyrene while the type of plastic in tributaries was polytetrafluoroethylene, polyethylene, polyester. More than 73% of microplastic was fragment and the other was fiber. We investigated the concentration of fish and found that the range of concentration was 4~48 particle/fish (22.0±14.6 particle/fish). The concentration of carp was the highest in 6 species, which was 48 particle/fish. The abundant type of plastic in fish was polytetrafluoroethylene, polyethethylene, rayon. More than 94% of microplastic was fragment and the other was fiber. We also investigated the concentration of microplastic on the gill. The range was 1~ 16 particle/fish (8.3±6.0 particle/fish). No microplastic was found in the fillet of fish.
We reviewed the papers related to the impact of microplastic on aquatic life. It can be categorized into two parts: physical effect and chemical effect.
When it comes to physical effect, fish ate microplastics as a prey and the intestine was filled with them, causing weight loss and reduction of activity for catching a prey. Meanwhile, regarding chemical effect, aquatic life could swallow microplastic on which POPs was adsorbed. Then, these POPs could be released in the intestine and damage liver. This study could make a contribution to establishing the groundwork to manage and reduce the microplastic in the freshwater and furthermore to protect aquatic life.
