I
Solid-state and liquid chemical based hydrogen storage technologies are promising because of their high volumetric hydrogen densities and high level of safety thanks to the low pressure during operation and storage compared to the conventional way of compressed hydrogen storage and transportation. In addition, solid-state hydrogen storage can support the storage based on liquid hydrogen carriers because the solid-state storage has faster reaction kinetics than those of chemicals-based systems by taking the role of fast-responding unit.
In those respects, we initially studied some practical aspects of Mg-based hydrogen storage materials including the cost-effective process, hydrogenation/dehydrogenation behavior, cyclic stability, and large scale applicability. Low temperature formation of Mg₂FeH6 as well as a new process method called vertical roll milling for mass production of the hydride phase was studied. Also, a simple casting method was applied to produce composites of Mg and Mg₂Ni with variation in concentration resulting in the composite hydrides of MgH₂ and Mg₂NiH₄ which have outstanding properties both in gravimetric capacity and reaction kinetics.
Expanding the material scale over the lab-scale experiments, we further developed a large scale reactor running at high temperatures with defined pressure allowing hydrogen gas to flow in and out of the tank in a quantitatively recordable and controllable way. We successfully carried out experiments with material of 50 g and came up with a computational method to analyze our large scale experimental data.
In addition to the solid-state hydrogen storage materials, potential chemical hydrides including formic acid, formate, and pi-conjugated cyclic compounds are also screened. Among these candidate chemicals, we found that formic acid, formates, and the mixture of formic acid/formate are the most viable because these chemicals are found to release hydrogen with rapid kinetics at low temperatures of below 120 ℃.
We then develop different types of heterogeneous catalysts that enable to dehydrogenate hydrogen from the formic acid and formate based chemicals by modifying catalytic supports as well as by active sites. In particular, formate based aqueous solutions prove to be reversible (hydrogenation - dehydrogenation) in the presence of Pd catalysts, strongly suggesting that the formate solution is a potentially feasible hydrogen carrier. Likewise, experimental studies present that formic acid and formic acid/formate mixtures could also be reversible hydrogen carriers for stationary energy applications. Lastly, the reaction pathways involving formic acid and formate with Pd based catalysts are further elucidated by experimental and computational studies.
