□ Purpose
Utilizing time-resolved spectroscopy at a few femtosecond and attosecond resolution as a major tool, we establish research foundation for the study of ultrafast dynamics in atoms, molecules, and nanoscopic systems. Fundamental knowledges on ultrafast electron dynamics, electron correlation, nuclear dynamics, and electron-nuclear interaction are sought. By exploiting the knowledges accumulated through these studies, we attempt to control chemical and physical processes by controlling electron and nuclear wave functions through phase and amplitude controlled ultrashort pulses and to observe their consequences.
□ contents
We have developed a few femtosecond and attosecond pulses in collaboration with the team led by Dr. Goulielmakis and Dr. Krausz at MPQ. Tunable pulses of a few femtosecond long over EUV to NIR wavelength region, sampling methods, measurement chambers, and optical setups are developed, which led to the development of time-resolved spectroscopy apparatus at <10 fs and attoseconds. By fully utilizing these apparatus, we have investigated electron dynamics, nuclear dynamics and their interactions from atoms and small molecules to proteins and nanostructures to establish the fundamentals of electron-nuclear quantum dynamics.
□ Development results
We have developed pump/probe transient absorption at 10 fs resolution covering entire EUV through NIR region, low temperature (5 K) time-resolved fluorescence (TF) having 50 fs resolution, a few femtosecond magneto-optic Kerr effect (MOKE), PHz switching, attosecond velocity map imaging (VMI), VSTA (vibrational spectrum by transient absorption) and VETF (vibrational spectrum of excited state by time-resolved fluorescence) capable of recording up to 3000 and 1500 cm-1, respectively.
By utilizing the developed experimental apparatus, quantum mechanical calculations, quantum mechanics/molecular mechanics (QM/MM) molecular dynamics simulation, and theoretical analyses, we have established molecular dynamics of ultrafast charge transfer in 4-(dimethylamino)benzonitrile, prodan and related molecules, excited state intramolecular proton transfer, coherent acid-base reaction, intersystem crossing in Fe/Ru complexes, and internal conversion in bodipy molecules. Distinct from traditional dynamics studies, special emphasis was on the electron-nuclear interaction and its influence on molecular dynamics. Fundamental field-matter interactions are studied. Strong field effect in Xe via absorption at EUV wavelength, ultrafast magnetization/demagnetization in Co/Pt multilayers, semimetallization in dielectrics such as LiF, near field measurement for nanospheres by attosecond streaking, surface plasmon in nanostructures by attosecond pulses, ultrafast giant magnetic cooling effect in nano-ferromagnetics, and coherent phonon control by controlling electron-lattice coupling are established.
□ Expected Contribution
The research is to observe ultrafast phenomena including electron dynamics at unprecedented time resolution through the development of relevant technologies. Improved experimental and theoretical methods will advance chemstry/physics in general and contribute to open a new field of dynamics of molecules and nanostructures. This fundamental research will also contribute to the industry by securing original technologies essential to future industry. Technologies on extreme lasers and measurement techniques will help to acquire proprietary technologies and contribute to fostering creative workforce needed for the future industry.
