Chemie.와 Chem. Sci., Acc. Chem. Res.

□ Purpose
Our proposal intends to develop strategies towards the synthesis of complex macromolecules. Here, we divide our strategies into three sub-topics, developing unique synthetic methods for novel polymerization, applying them for sequence-controlled polymerization (SCP), and finally, a new synthetic protocols toward various well-defined nanostructures via one-shot in-situ self-assembly.
□ contents
The main content of this proposal is to produce complex macromolecules with high precision. This proposal is divided into three sub-topics; first, developing new polymerizations using novel synthetic methods such as new living polymerization, multi-component polymerization, cascade polymerization and tandem catalysis. Second, these new methods will be applied for the preparation of sequence-specific polymers and those with much higher dimensional macromolecular architectures. Finally, we would like to expand these controlled polymerizations to prepare various well-defined nanostructures via one-shot in-situ self-assembly during the polymerization and study their dynamics. optoelectric properties and high-resolution imaging.
□ Developement results
During the last two and half years of the first period of CRI research center, we published 22 SCI papers. Among them, 20 obtained prestigious ranking of Top 10% JCR. Eleven were published in JACS and one each for Angew. Chemie., Chem. Sci. and Acc. Chem. Res. demonstrating our successful CRI project. In detail, we demonstrated numerous Ru catalyzed polymerizations to prepare new conjugated and non-conjugated polymers. This required not only high efficiency, but also high selectivities to obtain well-defined polymer architectures. Also, concept of cascade polymerizations and the mechanism involved were further investigated to shed a light on how catalyst’s interplay with monomers is crucial for the success. Then, we investigated other catalysis such as Ir, Pd, and Ni to achieve various living and non-living polymerizations. As a results, we could prepare various block copolymers and higher order polymer architectures. Lastly, our investigation to develope new methods of self-assembly has provided us with an great means to prepare various 1D semi-conducting nanowires with high controllability and precision, and even light control was possible. In other case, we could obtain interesting shape of fractal nanoparticles and even control the shape of the 2D nanosheets using simple changes of solvent compositions. We could also demonstrate that our semi-conducting 1D nanorods could even detect TNT becoming a good sensing materials.
□ Expected Contribution
New methods for polymerization not only expand chemical space of molecular architectures, but also lead to new functions, new applications and potentially new materials. Especially, the conjugated polymers forming in-situ nanostructures spontaneously may find useful applications in the field of organic electronics because of their unique nanostructures such as 1D or 2D morphologies, crystallinity and easy mass production.
