○ POSEIDON-Extended BURN ver. 1
○ POSEIDON-Extended BURN ver. 2

Ⅳ. Results
1. Development of radioactivity transport models
1.1 Development of grid-based marine radioactivity transport models coupled with multiple-scale circulation, wave, and suspended sediment transport modules.
○ Development of a suspended sediment transport model for the Yellow and East China Seas
-Refined bottom sediment information for the model input
-Sediment transport model validation through the comparison with GOCI images derived using a new conversion algorithm.
○ Development of a radioactivity transport model equipped with multiple bed layers and two-step transfer kinetics.
-Validation of one-step and two step models using laboratory experiment data by Smith et al (2004)
-Comparison between one-layer and multiple-layer models.
Models with single layer and multiple layers have been applied to Fukushima Dai-ichi and thereafter time variation of bottom radioactivity inventories have been compared at selected points. The model results reveal little difference at the early stage of radioactivity release, but as time goes there is a tendency that the single layer model produces higher value of bottom inventory than the multiple layer model.
1.2 Development of particle tracking-based marine radioactivity transport models
○ Development of a particle tracking model considering single fraction of sediment, single-bed layer, one-step transfer kinetics and the resuspension process at the sea bottom
-The Lagrangian model takes into account single fraction of sediment, single bed layer and 1-step transfer kinetics. Furthermore, resuspension of radioactivity from sea bottom to water column has been newly included.
○ Application to Fukushima Dai-ichi and application to the Yellow and East China Seas with examination of resuspension process effects.
-Experimental application to Fukushima Dai-ichi
A total of two year simulation of the transport of Fukushima-derived 137Cs in the Northern Pacific has been carried out. It is noted that the radioactive material was initially moved to the eastern direction by the Kuroshio and Kuroshio Extension, while two years later part of the radioactive material was dispersed to the west and thereafter became to be recirculated to the Japan, moving along the Ryuku Islands and mainland of Japan.
○ Application to the Yellow and East China Seas with examination of resuspension process effects.
The model was applied to Sanmen NPP, China and Taiwan NPP by constructing a hypothetical release scenario of 137Cs. Examination revealed that for the case of Taiwan NPP with relatively deep water depth and low turbidity the resuspension effect was hardly noticeable, while for the case of Sanmen NPP with shallow water depth and highly turbid water calculation with resuspension produced a temporal decrease in bottom inventory at a rate higher than that without resuspension.
2. Development of a marine biota model
A series of box-based biota models have been developed, starting from POSEIDON-Extended BURN model ver. 1 equipped with pelagic and benthic food chains, POSEIDON-Extended BURN model ver. 2 with resuspension process at the sea bottom, Multi-target tissue models ver. 1 and ver. 2. Furthermore, attempt to develop a grid-based biota model has been made for the first time in the world.
○ POSEIDON-Extended BURN model ver. 1
In the first phase of the study, POSEIDON-BURN model for the seven pelagic species (Phytoplankton, Zooplankton, Non-piscivorous fish, Piscivorous fish, Mollusc, Crustacean and Algae) was developed. With addition of three benthic species to the POSEIDON-BURN model for pelagic species developed in the first phase of the study,
POSEIDON-Extended BURN model ver. 1 has been developed which has a total of 12 state variables.
The model applied to the Northwestern Pacific with consideration of global fallout from 1945 and Fukushima release.
Model results in the coastal box near the Fukushima Dai-ichi NPP were in good agreement with measurements by TEPCO.
○ POSEIDON-Extended BURN model ver. 2
Model ver. 2 ws developed to improve the problem of POSEIDON-EXTENDED BURN ver. 1 concerned with the slower decay of bottom contamination than that of measurements. Subsequently the exchange rate of radionuclides at the interface of water column and bottom sediment was improved. Model ver. 2 was then applied to Fukushima and West European Seas to make confirmation of its applicability.
○ POSEIDON-Multi-target tissue biota model ver. 1
In the course of applying POSEIDON-BURN ver. 1 and ver. 2 to 90Sr a problem of underestimating the concentration of 90Sr was encountered. Multi-target tissue fish module has then been introduced to the POSEIDON-Extended BURN models ver 1. and ver. 2. In detail, substitution of single target tissue approach used in the previous models were made by 3 target tissue (Flesh, Bone and Organ) fish approach Note that in POSEIDON-Multi-target tissue biota model ver. 1 transfer to 3 target tissues occur independently, that is, without interaction among the target tissues.
The developed model was applied to Forsmark and Ringhals NPPs in Sweden, considering 60Co and 54Mn the behavior of which are similar to 90Sr. It was found that the multi-target tissue approach produces excellent results, solving the problem of under-estimation in the single target tissue approach. The application to the Fukushima Dai-ichi NPP produced better results in part due to the scattered feature of 90Sr measurements.
○ POSEIDON-Multi-target tissue biota model ver. 2
By considering the physiological interaction between fish organs through blood POSEIDON-Multi-tissue model ver. 1 has been extended to POSEIDON-Multi-tissue model ver. 2. Model validation was performed using laboratory experiments by Baudin et al,(2000).
2.2 Development of the grid-based model
○ Pioneering development of a grid-based dynamic marine biota model
The box models described above is advantageous in the long-term simulation but has a limitation such that time variation of circulation is not considered.
As a way to overcome the limitation attempt to solve the dynamic equation using the grid-based method. A finite-difference method-based model has then be developed with preliminary application to the Northern Pacific and Northwest Atlantic Ocean. The model results were found to be very encouraging but model refinement and validation is required in more quantitative ways.
3. A study of transfer processes of radioactivity materials
3.1 Analysis of radioactivity concentration level in major marine fishery products
○ Concentration level analysis of major radionuclides in fishery products from sea regions around Korean Peninsula
To investigate the concentration of major radionuclides in fishery products from sea regions around Korean Peninsula sampling was performed for a total fo 34 fishery products over the period from Mar 2015 to May 2017 in sea regions around Korean peninsula. Information on the sampling location and fishery products are presented in the following figure.
3.2 Calculation of biological concentration factors and construction of DB
○ Calculation of biological concentration factors according to trophic levels
To derive biological concentration factors regionally averaged values of sea water concentration data over 2015 to 2017 reported by KINS from the marine environmental radionuclide survey project.
Calculation showed that for the case of 137Cs the biological concentration factor in fishes has on average 75±37 which corresponds to 75% of IAEA recommended value. The concentration factor of Algae and Cephalopoda have values 2∼2.5 times higher than those of IAEA recommended values, while values for Crustacean and Mollusc were low, giving 60% and 40% than those of IAEA recommended values,
For the case of 239,240Pu the biological concentration factors have values lower than those recommended by IAEA in most of trophic levels.
Squid belonging to Cephalopoda showed different pattern with value of 89±30 which is 1.8 times higher than IAEA recommended value, Sr90 has on average values of 15∼24 for each trophic level which is higher than IAEA recommended value, Following figure summarizes the biological concentration factors of major radionuclides deduced in this study for all trophic levels along with the comparison with IAEA recommended values,
