This study aims to explore ways to utilize the maker education in school. To this end, this study explored the theoretical basis for explaining maker education, and looked at the policy status of official institutions related to maker education, while looking intothe perceptions and demands of school members on maker education. Furthermore, outstanding examples of maker education conducted at home and abroad were collectedand analyzed. Based on the opinions of various experts who are implementing maker education in school, researchers sought to derive components of maker education.
Finally, based on the above results, we developed an example material for teaching and learning, which can be used in various curricula to implement maker education.
The maker education is based on the maker movement that emerged as the makers gathered on the makerspace, and shared their activities and experiences. In addition, the educational values pursued in maker education are based on the constructivism paradigm. Accordingly, in maker education, first of all, students work with colleaguesto carry out making activities and share and improve their ideas. Second, instead of the teacher presenting a uniform making task, let students choose an actual making task based on their own needs. Third, it is assumed that anything that seeks to solve real problems and learn empirically, without limiting the type of making activity tospecific activities, can be a making activity. Fourth, it is considered important to evaluate the making activity process rather than to assess the output of the making activity, thereby allowing teachers to tolerate students’ failure and encouragere-challenging. Fifth, Learning models are adopted that includes self-directedness,tinkering, design thinking, maker activities, sharing and cooperation, and reflection.
Currently, the government implements the maker education-related policies centering on the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Science and ICT, and the Ministry of SMEs and Startups. The Ministry of Education is carrying out development of programs related to the maker education, improvement of teaching and learning environment for the maker education, and support of teachers' professionalism for the maker education.
The Ministry of Science and ICT is carrying out the construction of the Muhansangsangsil. The Ministry of SMEs and Startups is carrying out the establishment of the makerspace, forming a network of makers and supporting the start-up of the makers. Aside from the government, the municipal and provincial education offices are also implementing various policies related to maker education.
A survey was conducted to check the awareness and needs of school members(teachers and students) about maker education. 1,108 teachers (614 elementary school students and 494 middle school students) and 4,243 students (1,807 primary school students and 2,436 middle school students) participated in. The survey results show the followings: First, it was confirmed that teachers and students did not have much experience and understanding of the maker education. Second, middle school members had experienced more various types of maker education than elementary school members. Third, teachers recognized that the maker education was the most helpful in generating interest for students and improving the quality of their classes. Fourth, it was found that the current level of the environment for maker education and the level of professionalism of teachers was very low compared to the level expected by teachers.
Outstanding examples of maker education conducted at home and abroad were collected and analyzed. First of all, after analyzing the examples in Korea, we were able to get the following implications. First, maker education promotes students' voluntary thinking and activities. Second, maker education allows students to develop core competencies through communication, cooperation and sharing in the course of finding and solving problems. Third, maker education encourages creative convergence activities by integrating various curricular contents. Fourth, maker education stimulates interest in learning and increases willingness to participate in class by giving students choice. Fifth, the will and effort of teachers is required to practice the maker education.
The following implications were then obtained from the analysis of external examples:First, maker education goes beyond science and technology and deals with a variety of topics. Second, it is important to have students perform free, self-directed activities and exercise creativity. Third, maker education, beyond abstract knowledge transfer, induces students to acquire knowledge in practice through making activities. Fourth, maker education allows both teachers and students to overcome their reluctance andfear of technological change. Fifth, in addition to teachers and students, schools and local communities can cooperate in various ways for the maker education.
Through the in-depth interviews with experts implementing the outstanding examples of domestic maker education and the approach using Q-methodologies, various opinions on the maker education in school were collected. Based on the opinions which all experts agreed to, we derived components of the maker education in school. Starting with 359 statements from the initial stage, we were able to select 36 statements that all the experts agreed on at the final stage. Based on this, the six components were derived: 'Convergent task in practical context', 'Creative design (problem-solving) centered teaching and learning process', 'Making for creating values', 'Educational environment characterized by openness, sharing, and participation', 'Learners with self-directed competency' and 'Teachers with competences to practice'. The details of each of the six components are as follows. First, in relation to the task, the details include tasks beyond tool learning,curricular-convergent tasks, tasks that students could choose, and tasks that help solve real problems. Second, in relation to the teaching and learning, the details include teaching and learning where thinking and learning are triggered, teaching and learning where students can actively participate, teaching and learning where sharing is actively conducted, and teaching and learning where diversity and differences are respected.
Third, with regard to making, the details include making allows to fail and re-challenge,making stimulates creative desire and interest, making workable, and making worthwhile.
Fourth, the educational environment in which diverse resources can be flexibly utilized was specified in detail. Fifth, in relation to learners, we specified learners with self-directed attitudes, learners with cooperative attitudes, and learners seeking achievement and self-esteem in detail. Sixth, in relation to teachers, teachers with passion, teachers with trust in students, and teachers with know-how in teaching were specified in detail.
Based on the results of the research, we developed an example material for teaching and learning that can be referenced when applying maker education to schools. The purpose of the project was to develop illustrative materials for elementary and middle schools, illustrative materials for curricular and non-curricular education, and examples for various subjects such as Technology and Home, Music, Art, and Korean. In particular, it was noted that the components of the maker education presented in thisstudy could be reflected in the illustrative examples. As a result, a total of 15 examples were developed and presented in the report. By school, there are 4 types of materialsfor elementary schools and 11 for middle schools. By curriculum, there are 10 types of materials for curricular education and 5 for non-curricular education.
