This paper examined the role, limits and future challenges of civilsociety in IMFgovernance process. The relationship between IMF and civilsociety has more deepened with IMF’s acknowledging the importance ofengagement with civil society since the mid 1990’s. Civil society hascontributed to let IMF enhance accountability and transparency, tosupplement the poor representation, and to change policies and programs,particularly including debt relief, poverty reduction, and conditionality andstructural adjustment toward more considering those who are affected bythem. For more effective role of civil society in future, it needs tostrengthen internal legitimacy, improve lack of economic literacy in termsof activities of IMF, and cooperate between civil society organizations inthe North and South in direction of supporting to build up southernpartners’ capability and allow them to speak for their citizen.
