The purpose of this study was to identify the effect of self-directed playing applied to children with mental retardation. The specific goals to accomplish this purpose were as follows, that is to identify the effect of self-directed playing on the autonomy, self-regulation, psychological empowerment and self-realization of children with mental retardation.Design of the research was as follows that, the input of self-directed playing was designated as independent variables, and self-determination was subject variables. After the pre-tests on the scales of the sampling children's self-determination were carried out, experimental group were applied to the self-directed playing program and comparative group were taught as a usual time and then the post-tests were performed. t-test was used to identify the differences according to the result from post- tests and the data were processed by SPSS 10.0(Statistical Package for the Science) statistics program.The results from the above research were as follows that, the self-directed playing program also had a positive effect on their autonomy, self-regulation, psychological empowerment, and self-realization.Accordingly, the children with mental retardation applied to the self-directed playing program had a positive effect on their self-determination.From the result of this study, I suggested that the follow-up research should be provided to identify the effect of self-directed playing program on the children being various levels and the consistent research on the children of kindergarten or after-elementary school should be followed.
