Descriptive Video Services (DVS) has been widely recognized as an effective modality for people with visual impairments to access movies and/or documentaries, including a significant amount of visual information. It provides a lot of nonverbal information such as action, gesture, background, and custume by verbally describing them. Because of this function, DVS is regarded as an instrumental service to promote social integration as well as to improve a quality of life for people with visual impairments. For this reason, high level of professional expertise and knowledge about digital technology are required to produce high quality DVS movies or documentaries. In this context, yielding the production cost of different types of DVS, using a scientific and objective method, is essential to provide basic data to develop an appropriate service model and budgetary plan. Therefore, the purpose of this investigation is to measure production costs of different types of DVS. Results suggested that production cost differs due to type and duration of a movie or documentary produced, a frequency of caption and foreign language inserted, and the use of professional jargon or graphic image.
