Purpose: This study aimed to investigate the effects of caregivers' novel word production frequency and communication characteristics on fastmapping of two-year-old late talkers. Method: This study was conducted with ten pairs of late talkers and their caregivers and ten pairs of typically developing children and their caregivers. Fast mapping performance was examined by presenting study participants with familiar toys containing four non-familiar objects, instructing them to interact, and then presenting the children with non-familiar objects. Results: First, the results on caregivers' novel word production frequency and communication characteristics (explaining, responding, and questioning) showed that the frequencies of caregivers' late talkers were significantly lower than those of the caregivers' of typically developing children. Second, the results about children fast mapping task performance showed that the late talkers’ performance was significantly lower than typically developing children performance in both comprehension and production. Conclusion: The results suggest that caregivers' communication characteristics can influence children’s fast mapping. Therefore, when providing language intervention for late talkers, it is necessary to examine interactions between the caregivers and children, analyze the caregivers' communication characteristics, and provide relevant parent education.
