This study attempts to explore the changes in the historical maps of the early modern and modern Japan after the liberation in the high school historical atlas. The historical maps which include maps, picture, and illustrations have been used as an auxiliary textbook for history classes. They had been published under the authorized system from the liberation period to the 2011 revised National Curriculum.The historical maps of the early modern Japan in the historical atlas were few from the syllabus period to the 5th National Curriculum, and the maps of the modern Japan were focused on the Pacific War. During the periods of the 6th and the 7th National Curriculum, the number of the historical maps of the early modern Japan in the historical atlas increased, and the historical maps of the modern Japan were rich in content than before. During the periods of the 2009 revised National Curriculum and the 2011 revised National Curriculum, the maps of the early modern and modern Japan started to reflect the East Asian point of view. These changes show the influence of the trend of the Japanese history research and the revisions of the educational curriculum after the liberation.This study shows the increase in the number of the historical maps of the early modern and modern Japan in the high school historical atlas and the new effort on the production of maps. The historical maps need to include the research outcome and consider the learning contents and the students’ level for the development of history education.
