To evaluate cardiac responses to exercise training, M-mode echocardiogram(UCG), electrocardiogram (ECG) and maximal oxygen uptake (VO₂max) during on the treadmill were done before and after 20 weeks of intensive training in 15 college football players. On ECG before training, the incidence of sinus bradycardia, high voltage of QRS complex, QTc prolongation and incomplete right bundle branch block were 6.6 %, 40.0 % and 6.6% respectively; on UCG, left ventricular(LV) enlargement, septal and/or posterior wall hypertrophy and mitral vale prolapse were noted in 40.0 %, 53.0 % and 6.6 % respectively. Heart rate after training decreased but insignificantly compaired with the pretraining values. No significant change in PR interval, QRS duration, QTc interval and sum of voltage of SV₁+RV_5 occured. On UCG the septal and posterior wall thickness increased significantly after training. LV mass increased from 195.6±39.07 g to 226.4±40.02 g (p<0.01). However, changes in LV and atrial dimensions were insignificant. VO₂max increased from 63.5±6.19 ml/kg/min to 72.0±5.26 ml/kg/min (p<0.001). Body fat decreased significantly with training. The study suggests that (1) adaptive changes in heart of football players are reflected on ECG by sinus bradycardia, high voltage and QTc prolongation, and on UCG by LV enlargement and hypertrophy : and (2) intensive physical training results in an increase of septal and posterior wall thickness, LV mass and cardiopulmonary endurance.
