The properites of alumina modified with sulfate and phosphate and Mo catalyst suppourted in alumina modified with sulfate and phosphate were characterized. The Point of Zero Charge(PZC) of modified alumina and the amount of Mo anion adsorbed on modifed alumina were measured. The PZC of modifed alumina and the amount of Mo anion adsorbed on modified alumina decreased with increasing modifier content. Nonlinear relationship between the PZC and Mo uptake in modified alumina was observed. The bonding mode of sulfae on alumina changed with increasing sulfate content. The decrease in the PZC and in the adsorption site for Mo anion facilitates the formation of polymolybdate when Mo was supported on alumina modified with phosphate. The sulfidation of molybdate was promoted by the addition of phosphate. The catalytic activity in HDS reaction of Mo catalyst supported on alumina modified with phosphate was higher than that of Mo/$Al_2O_3$ when the phosphate content was less than 5 wt\%. In Mo catalyst supported on alumina modified with sulfate, $MoO_3$ was formed more easily than in Mo catalyst supported on alumina modifed with phosphate. The suppressed sulfidation of molybdate can be explained by the formation of $MoO_3$ and the presence of S=O group. The HDS activity of Mo catalyst supported on alumina modified with sulfate was lower than that of Mo/$Al_2O_3$, regardless of the sulfate content in Mo/Al-S. Sulfided alumina was prepared by sulfiding pre alumina in the arnge of the sulfiding temperature between 673K and 1073K. The PZC's of sulfided aluminas were lower than that of pure alumina. When alumina was sulfiede, the interaction sites to be adsorbed Mo anions decreased. The amount of Mo species interacting with alumina denoted by ESR band(g=1.93) decreased. The dispersionn of Mo was suppressed in Mo catalyst supported on sulfided alumina. Mo catalyst supported on sulfided alumina showed lower HDS activity than Mo/$Al_2O_3$ catalyst. Co catalyst supported on sulfided alumina showed higher HDS activity than Co/$Al_2O_3$ catalyst. The higher HDS activity of Co catalyst supported on sulfided alumina may originate from the increase in the active Co sulfide via a blockage of imperfect sites within the alumina structure. The structures and activities of Mo/$Al_2O_3$ and CoMo/$Al_2O_3$ catalysts sulfided with $H_2S/H_2$ were studied in the range of sulfiding temperature between 573K and 1073K. The higher sulfiding temperature decreased the amount of oxo-$Mo^{+5}$ interacting with alumina in Mo/$Al_2O_3$ and CoMo/$Al_2O_3$ catalysts and finally destroyed all Mo-O-Al bondings at 1073K. The decrease in oxo-$Mo^{+5}$ facilitates the formation of the crystalline Mo sulfide Co facilitates the formation of Mo sulfide weakly interaction with alumina. Co also retarded the aggregation and crystallization of Mo sulfide. Cobalt sulfide(g=2.16, Hpp=200G) was formed when CoMo/$Al_2O_3$ was sulfided at 1073 K. The rapid decrease in the ratio of activity of CoMo/$Al_2O_3$ to Mo/$Al_2O_3$ in thiophene HDS reaction when CoMo/$Al_2O_3$ and Mo/$Al_2O_3$ was sulfided above 873 K can be explained by the transformation of the sulfide structure. CoMo/$Al_2O_3$ catalysts were prepared by impregnating Co into oxidic or sulfided Mo/$Al_2O_3$. In CoMo/$Al_2O_3$ catalyst prepared by impregnating Co into sulfided Mo/$Al_2O_3$, the interaction between Mo and alumina decreaesd and the fromation of synergic sites denoted by ESR band (g=2.11) was facilitated. This structureal change results in the increase in HDS activity.
