Poly(butylacrylate-co-styrene)/polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) core-shell composite particles having different refractive index were prepared by a two-stage consecutive emulsion polymerization. The refractive index of the core phase was controlled varying the amount of divinylbenzene (DVB) which acted as a crosslinker and a refractive index-enhancer. The particle size of these core-shell composite particles prepared did not change, although the composition was varied incorporating DVB in the core phase. These core-shell composite particles also showed the narrow particle size distribution irrelevant to the amount of DVB. The impact strength for the PMMA toughened with these core-shell composite particles increased about three times, compared with pristine PMMA. However, as the amount of DVB increased, the impact strength decreased. This was thought to be attributed to the loss of the elastic property of the core phase with the increase of crosslinking density. The impact strength was also increased as the content of the core-shell composite particles increased, because the volume of rubber in a PMMA matrix increased. The PMMA toughened with the core-shell composite particles having the core crosslinked with DVB of 1wt% showed the best transparency. However, the transparency was rather decreased as the difference of the refractive index of the core phase from that of pristine PMMA increased. This suggested that matching the refractive index of the core phase to that of pristine PMMA was one of key factors in preparing transparent PMMA toughened with the core-shell composite particles.
